COACHES REPORT

Provincial Coach Dean Boles was here last Thursday to observe our senior program in action as well as to officially observe Nathan Lethbridge successfully achieve the Swim Ontario "gold standard" for 25m of underwater fly kick.  Congratulations Nathan. Dean has set 12.5s (males) and 13.5s (females) as the gold standard for Ontario swimmers, and whenever a swimmer achieves this time they receive a gold Swim Ontario cap. To date (over the past 2 years) 38 males and 21 females across Ontario have achieved this benchmark. As we all know underwater fly kick is now generally considered the "5th stroke" in competitive swimming and, if done well, can be the 2nd fastest behind only freestyle.  Dean also commented on the quality of our dryland program, comparing it to what he's seen at the University of Michigan (recent winners of the men's NCAA championship) and how it runs like a "machine." Finally, he spoke to our swimmers about "swimming hygiene", which refers to the skills that help keep our swimming "clean", with particular attention to push-offs, and how we should always be a) pushing off the wall underwater b) pushing off the wall on our side (or back) to simulate a race push-off and c) pushing off the wall with our bodies level, feet planted on the T, instead of pushing down to the bottom then climbing back up to the surface. So, for the next few weeks work on your "swimming hygiene", good ready position on the wall, push off every wall on your side (or back for backstroke) and push level off the wall!  The cleaner you swim, the faster you swim.

NOTES FROM THE TREASURER

Swimmer Account Statements

The next swimmer account statements will be sent by email by this upcoming weekend. They will include meet fees up to and including the Pentathlon meet as well as adjustments for the Ottawa, Newmarket, Florida and Montreal team travel trips. We will be using this statement as an opportunity to get all accounts in the club current.

There will be at least 30 days between when these swimmer statements are sent and the entry cut-off for the Hollandia Meet and as per club policy, amounts not paid with 30 days of receipt of the travel statement can result in swimmers not being able to complete for the club so please pay on a timely basis when you receive your statement. If there are special circumstances, please contact me so we can make the appropriate arrangements.

General information on swimmer statements including payment options can be found by logging in to the website and looking under swimmer accounts. The entry summary tab includes details for meets fees (please note we do not currently use the website billing system).

As always, feel free to contact me at lac.treasurer@gmail.com if you have any questions about the postings on your account. This time of year is very busy for me so if I do not get back to you within a couple days, please do not hesitate to send me a reminder of your request. For any questions requiring more than a simple e-mail, please see me at the pool or e-mail me so we can make arrangements to speak over the phone.

Thanks, Steve

SWIM CAMP

The sign-up for Swim Camp has been posted on the website. This camp is for our young swimmers born in 2001 and later. Camp will run July 8th- 11th, the week leading into the Paul Hauch Invitational. There is limited space available so please indicate early.

OFFICIALS REPORT

Western University and the London Silver Dolphins Masters Swim Team hosted the Ontario Provincial Masters Short Course Championship this past weekend and numerous LAC officials were there helping out. Great work folks! It was a great meet and your participation was a big help. It is always nice to assist at other club’s meets, especially a club that so many of our parents swim for.

The Annual LAC LC Pentathlon is coming up this weekend and the sign-ups are pretty much full already. A few more openings will be appearing for Strokes and Turns qualified officials so if you think you got there too late take another look just in case an opening has appeared. On a related note, in order to work as a Strokes and Turns official you must first take the Strokes and Turns Clinic, either on-line, or at a live clinic. You can sign-up if you have not yet taken the clinic but you must take it before doing the job.
