COACHES REPORT

Lots of LAC'ers in action last weekend, with racing on 3 different fronts, here in our home pool at the 12&Under Celebration, in Toronto at the Ontario Cup, and in Milton at the Marlins Invitational. The 12&Under Celebration saw plenty of  great team spirit (I saw a beautiful poster created by our 8&under swimmers!), plenty of first-time performances, and lots of improvement in stroke technique. It's important for everyone to remember in the early stages of a competitive swimming career that a good swim is not necessarily measured by a medal or a ribbon or even a personal best. A lot of the time a good swim is one where a swimmer shows the confidence to try a newly-learned skill for the very first time, whether in technique or in strategy. Personal bests are definitely a good sign, showing that technique, endurance and speed are improving, and we had plenty of them at our 12&U meet, but remember that you can still have a good race without it being a personal best, and you can be a winner without placing first. If you did a personal best every time you raced, it wouldn't be long before you were the record-holder. The reality is, over the course of your swimming career, you will have more races that aren't pb's than are - and the more important lessons, not just in swimming but in life, come from the defeats and the disappointments. At the Toronto meets, our older swimmers achieved personal bests in "only" 33% of their swims, one out of every three, yet at both meets there was plenty of great racing, with lots of improvement by many in the areas of tactics and technique.  All you can do as a swimmer is keep doing what your coach tells you, keep working hard, keep believing in yourself, and you will have a successful swimming career, regardless of the number of personal bests you achieve or medals you win.

Congratulations to First Time Qualifiers: Hannah Arnold, Aidan Belton, James Czerkawski, Josh Ellis and Holly Holden (Regionals) and Sasha Goodreau (Provincials).

Congratulations to Club Record Setter Maggie MacNeil in the 13/14 girls 200FL.

Congratulations to first time All-Time Top 10 performer David Hickey, in the 11/12 boys age category.

Congratulations to William Stewart for winning all 5 of his 50FR races at the Milton "Dash for Cash" event last Sat evening, thereby winning $100.

And a big THANK YOU to all of our parent volunteers who made the 12&U Celebration a big success.

PROVINCIALS FEB.27-MAR.2

CALL for CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS!! We are hosting the Provincial Championships at CGAC, a big undertaking requiring a significant volunteer commitment. One of the areas in which assistance will be required is the canteen; we require one key volunteer "canteen manager" for each of the four days (4 key canteen volunteers). Tim Clark will oversee the four days, but the plan is to break up the work load by having one volunteer take responsibility for one day. With the four days, therefore, 1 key manager volunteer for each day is being sought. Some canteen experience is helpful for this fun, full day volunteer commitment organizing and working with the 3-4 other members of the canteen team; for more information contact Tim at clark.hdtlc@gmail.com or 519 670-8955.

NEWMARKET INVITATIONAL Mar 1 – 2

This meet takes place at the Magna Centre, 800 Mulock Dr, Newmarket. All LAC swimmers Age Group Orange and above, not attending Provincials, are invited to attend. TEAM TRAVEL will be offered for this event. A school bus will depart CGAC on Fri.Feb.28 at 4 pm, and will return at 10 pm on Sun.Mar.2. Approximate cost for transportation, hotel, and meals will be $250 per swimmer. Chaperones will be required - any parents interested in this position can contact Donna, Andrew or Maria Smith. Please indicate when you confirm your attendance whether or not you will require team travel.

LATE SEASON TIME TRIAL Mar 2

This meet has been added to the meet calendar as a last short course racing opportunity for our Development and Introductory swimmers before the March Break. It takes place at CGAC. The warm up is at 12:30 pm. This meet is now available for sign up on the LAC website.

OFFICIALS REPORT

We hosted another excellent 12 and Under Celebration this past weekend. Special thanks to Meet Manager Margaret Marshall, Meet Referee Mike Williams, all visiting officials, and of course our home LAC officials. As with all meets there were some challenges but our team of volunteers makes these problems invisible to the swimmers and spectators and that is why our meets are so great. Nicely done!

The Western Region Championships are still short on Strokes and Turns and Timing Officials. Each club is required to provide 3 officials for each session. If you are going to be there anyway and are willing to help, please contact Carol McNiece at mcniececarol@yahoo.ca . So far LAC has 2 officials signed up for session 1. That is all.

The Western Region clinic day will be held on Saturday, March 22 at the St. Thomas Campus of Fanshawe College. There will be several clinics to choose from in both the morning and afternoon. This is  a great opportunity to attend live clinics for those positions that are presented less often. Morning refreshments and lunch are provided and there is no charge for any of this. Mark your calendars. More details to follow.

If anyone has any questions about anything officiating related, please do not hesitate to contact me.
