Sat Feb 1 Senior Blue CGAC 5:30-7:30am

Good luck to our 91 swimmers racing in Windsor this weekend at the Western Region Championships! This is the largest team we've ever had at this level. To help you with your performances this weekend (and at every competition), Dr.Greg Wells in his holiday presentation to our senior swimmers said that the ability to focus is critical to a good performance outcome. And his main strategy for getting and staying focussed involves using CUE WORDS before your race or event. Positive self-talk, used in the moments before your race, can really help. Think about what you need to do to have a good performance, or think back to when you had a good performance and what it felt like, and then see if you can describe those actions or feelings in one or two words. The example Dr.Wells used was of the Canadian gold-medal winning moguls skier in Vancouver at the 2010 Winter Olympics, Alexandre Bilodeau. If you ever get a chance to see a replay of that race, in the 20 seconds before he started down the hill Alexandre could be seen repeating two words over and over: "forward" and "soft". Think of one or two cue words you can use to help you focus before your race - if you can make this a consistent part of your pre-race routine it will help you focus on the performance, and will help eliminate any perceived pressure or stress. It will lead to INTENTION without TENSION.

CALL for CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS!! We are hosting the Provincial Championships at CGAC, a big undertaking requiring a significant volunteer commitment. One of the areas in which assistance will be required is the canteen; we require one key volunteer "canteen manager" for each of the four days (4 key canteen volunteers). Tim Clark will oversee the four days, but the plan is to break up the work load by having one volunteer take responsibility for one day. With the four days, therefore, 1 key manager volunteer for each day is being sought. Some canteen experience is helpful for this fun, full day volunteer commitment organizing and working with the 3-4 other members of the canteen team; for more information contact Tim at or 519 670-8955.

This meet takes place at the Magna Centre, 800 Mulock Dr, Newmarket. All LAC swimmers Age Group Orange and above, not attending Provincials, are invited to attend. If there is sufficient interest, TEAM TRAVEL will be offered for this event. A bus will depart CGAC on Fri.Feb.28 at 4 pm, and will return at 10 pm on Sun.Mar.2. Approximate cost for transportation, hotel, and meals will be $250 per swimmer. Chaperones will be required - any parents interested in this position can contact Donna, Andrew or Maria Smith. Please indicate when you confirm your attendance whether or not you will require team travel.

This meet has been added to the meet calendar as a last short course racing opportunity for our Development and Introductory swimmers before the March Break. It takes place at CGAC. The warm up is at 12:30 pm. This meet is now available for sign up on the LAC website.

The Ontario Swimming Officials Association is moving towards requiring all officials working at a meet to register with OSOA.CA. To be proactive in that regard, if you have taken a clinic or plan on working at a meet as any official, from timer on up, could you please register with OSOA.CA, if you have not already done so. To do this, go to and click on Register Now. Fill in all of the required information and continue until complete. It is very intuitive. Note that your region is Western and your club is London Aquatic Club. If you have any trouble with this or if you do not recall if you have already registered then please email me for assistance.

The Western Region clinic day will be held on Saturday, March 22 at the St. Thomas Campus of Fanshawe College. The morning clinics will include Referee, Recorder/Scorer, Strokes and Turns, and Chief Finish Judge/Chief Judge Electronics. The afternoon clinics will be Starter, Meet Manager, Clerk Of Course, and Chief Timekeeper. This a great opportunity to attend live clinics for those positions that are presented less often. Morning refreshments and lunch are provided and there is no charge for any of this. Mark your calendars. You can register on your OSOA.CA account. Email me if you have trouble doing this.

If anyone has any questions about anything officiating related, please do not hesitate to contact me.
