Giving Back to the Community
Inn From The Cold Community Meal
In late January, some swimmers from our Senior/National Senior group, under the supervision of Coach/Chef Sam, prepared and served a hearty and nutritious meal to some of Newmarket's more vulnerable citizens. Sam designed the menu and the swimmers were his assistants in creating a meal of chicken cacciatore, pork goulash, roasted root vegetables, steamed brown rice and fresh buns. Fruit crisp and ice cream was offered for dessert. The patrons of Inn From The Cold raved about the delicious meal and enjoyed visiting with the Stingrays who served them.
This Community Meal gave our older swimmers a wonderful opportunity to volunteer their time for a worthy cause and meet in person the people they were helping. It was a very eye opening and rewarding experience for the swimmers involved!
The Stingrays were able to offer this meal thanks to donations from some of our Club members. Three families donated $100 each, giving us a total of $300 to purchase the groceries. That $300 was enough to prepare 100 meals thanks to Sam's creativity and smart shopping! We would like to make this an annual community event for the Stingrays.
Neighbourhood Network Tree Planting
On the last day of May, over 60 swimmers from our AG/1/2/3/4 and S/NS groups took part in a tree planting event in cooperation with Neighbourhood Network, the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and the Town of Newmarket. Over 250 seedlings were planted off Bogarttown Curve in the Mulock/Leslie area. The swimmers wore their red Stingrays t-shirts and represented our Club proudly as they helped in this important community event.
Santa Claus Parade
Every year in November, the Newmarket Stingrays take part in the annual Christmas parade in Newmarket. Typically we walk the route with a small 'float'. As part of the larger community, it is important that the Stingrays give back to the community. It's a fun day out for bot the swimmers and their families!
