The journey through competitive swimming with the Otters begins with our Skills program. Here, swimmers are taught the basics of swimming: how to streamline, how to push off the wall, how to do a racing dive and how to hold a kickboard. Stroke instruction is focused on the basic coordination of freestyle and backstroke. The foundations of breaststroke will also be taught. Each day swimmers will learn in a safe and fun environment while being instructed by our excellent Skills coaches.

At the Skills level the swimmers do not compete against swimmers from other teams. At this level we are not concerned with speed but with skill. We teach the swimmers how to swim properly before teaching them how to swim fast. However, at various times during the year there may be in-house events in which the Skills swimmers will be invited to attend. I strongly encourage bringing your swimmer to these events. They are a great way to become acclimated to the structure of swim meets.

At the end of each Skills session the swimmers will be given a report. The report will simply indicate where the swimmers are strong and where further improvement is needed. When your swimmer is ready for the next level in our club (Jr. Age Group) you will be notified by the coaching staff.
