The Summerland ORCA Swim Club offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the Summerland ORCA Swim Club to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

 

ORCA Group Practice Schedule and Group Definitions

I-Can-Swim Program (4 Stages)  Ages 6&Over

Overview

This progressive 3-Stage program teaches swimmers 54 important swimming skills, and focuses on seven major skill progressions: butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle, water safety, entries and turns. Swimmers learn to put together whole skill-sets, one step at a time.

I-Can-Swim Stage 1 (Bootcamp)-

(fall session Sep-Dec, winter session Jan-Apr)

Tues & Thurs 3:30pm – 4:00pm (2x30min workouts)

Requirement: ability to swim 25m unaided and in deep end. 

Establishes a sound basis for the future acquisition of swimming skills. Children develop the fundamentals of swimming while learning to be comfortable and relaxed in the water.

  • Entry and immersion
  • Buoyancy and floatation
  • Submersion and breath control
  • Safe movement in the water
  • Underwater Streamline + Propulsion
  • Basic Movements in all 4 strokes
  • 1 report card

 

I-Can-Swim Stage 2

Mon & Wed 3:30 – 4:15pm (2x45 min workouts)

Requirement: 25m of each stroke (Basic concept of all four strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breastroke and butterfly) 

Attend at least 3 Jamborees from September to April.

Focus is on FUNdamentals and basic movements and orientation ability needed for swimming skills like arm action, sculling and breathing.  Introduction to legal competitive turns and diving.

  • Streamlining – propulsion
  • Coordinated movements of all 4 strokes strokes
  • Basic Dives
  • Introduction to turn skills
  • Working on 50m swims in all 4 strokes
  • 2 reporting periods with report cards

 

I-Can-Swim Stage 3

Mon & Wed 4:15 – 5:00pm (2x45min workouts)

Requirement:  50m of each stroke and legal turns

Attend at least 4 Jamborees from September to April.

Focus is on FUNdamentals and improving reaction/rhythm and increasing endurance for all four strokes. Advanced dives and turns are also covered. When swimmers complete Stage 3, they have learned to swim well.

  • Major focus – breathing and stroke timing
  • Stroke Improvement – free, back, breast, fly
  • Advanced turn skills
  • Advanced diving skills
  • Working on 100 IM (Individual Medley)
  • 2 reporting periods with report cards

 

I-Can-Swim Fast Stage 4

Tuesday & Thursday 4:00 – 5:00pm (2x1 hr) + Friday 5:00 – 6:30pm (1.5hr).

Requirement:  Has attained their 2:30 time in the 100 IM in either a jamboree or workout, allowing them to attempt the 200IM in Jamboree competition. 

Attend atleast 5 Jamborees from September to May.

Striving in all 4 strokes, turns, and starts. Ability to swim 100 and up to 200m races.  Focus still on FUNdamentals.  Training their 200 IM in workout and in competitions. 

Stroke drills, endurance building and competition gives swimmers the knowledge and confidence to swim efficiently and FAST. Focus is on skill refinement and stroke enhancement.

Reporting Periods are substituted by evaluating improvement in Jamboree events.

Multi-Sport/Senior Fitness

Choice of 3 x 1.5 hr workouts weekday Monday-Friday 5:00-6:30pm or Saturday 7:30am – 9:00am

Requirements: Is 11 years of age or older.  Has chosen to remain non-competitive but is able to train within the levels of Regional program.  Encouraged to swim their free 1x regional meet included in their SwimBC payment.

 

Regional 1

choice of 3x workouts/week: Mon- Fri 5:00 – 6:30pm Saturday 7:30-9:00am

Requirements: (ages 8-12)  Has met their 4:00 qualification time for the 200 IM either in workout or competition allowing them to swim in Regional Meets.  Focus is on technical and physical development of all 4 strokes, and turns and starts.  Introduction to activation and flexibility routines.  Expected to commit and swim in 5 Swim Meets throughout the season. 

Regional 2

Choice of 4x workouts/week:  Mon-Fri 5:00-6:30 and Saturday  7:30 – 9:00am.

Requirements: (ages 11-14)  Focus is on proficiency of all swimming skills (I.M. Based) building endurance and continue the development of activation and flexibility routines.  Introduce mental skills of goal setting and visualization.  Expected to commit and swim in 6 swim meets throughout the season.

Age Group 1  (Middle School Aged)

Choice of 5-6x workouts/week:  Mon-Fri 4:30-6:30 (dryland included in time) and Sat Morning 7:30-9:00am

Requirements: Ages (11-14). Middle School Aged swimmers who have attained Tier 1+2 or prospects and can commit to the 80% weekly attendance requirement (minimum 4 workouts)

Swimmers in this group are committed and are striving for personal best times at competitions.  Focus is on developing all swim skills with speed as well as endurance, while maintaining the activation and flexibility routines .  Introduction to dryland strength as well as mental skills of goal setting and visualization.  Expected to commit to 6-8 swim meets throughout the season. 

Age Group 2  (High School Swimmers)

All workouts 6-8 /week (depending on training phase of season):  Mon-Fri 4:30-6:30 (dryland included in time)  or Mon/Wed/Fri Morning 6:30 -7:45am and Sat Morning 7:30-9:00am

Requirements: Ages (14&Up) Competitive High School Athletes who can commit to  80% weekly attendance requirement (minimum 5 workouts)

Swimmers in this group have achieved or are striving for Provincial/National standards.  Athletes in this program are committed and want to excel in competitions.  Focus is on mastery and refinement of swimming skills with speed as well as endurance.  Continue the dryland strength and flexibility program, and developing autonomy, input and individual responsibility regarding swim program.   Expected to commit to minimum 8 swim meets throughout the season.

**Multi-swimmer discount applies to any family with more than 1 swimmer.  There will be a % discount from the fees above for each swimmer (based on number of swimmers/family):     2 swimmers=5%,   3 swimmers=6%,  

 4 swimmers=7%,     5 swimmers=8% 

**Discount does not include SwimBC fees.

**Registration will be online only.  At time of registration the 1st month's fees and SwimBC fees are paid.  All monthly payments after this will be by credit card and on the first day of the month...for those registering in August or September the 1st regular payment will occur October 1.  For families who would like to pay the balance of the year upfront (after registration) please contact the treasurer.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     .
