Coaches are constantly asked “How do I stay healthy when traveling or at long meets? What should I pack to eat on the road?”
It can be difficult maintaining your healthy diet, and getting all the fuel you need when your are away from home for long periods of time. It would be a shame to work so hard all year, and continually refine your diet, to be left to eat junk when your are at your biggest competitions. Here are some foods that could help –
Perishable - string cheese, turkey sandwich with whole wheat bread, apples, grapefruits, plums, bananas, yogurt, pb&j sandwich, and carrots
Non-Perishable – dried cherries, walnuts, almonds, 7-grain whole wheat crackers, low sodium pretzels, granola, rice chips, and cereal
Let’s be real. There are going to be times when you can’t get exactly what you want. Don’t worry. Be confident that you are trying to stick to your diet and that your body is still getting some good nutrition. Remember, the healthy snacks you packed are helping you supplement to stay healthy and keep you on the path towards achieving your goals.
Most people don’t think to drink much when they are on the road. You don’t need to be sweating to lose fluids. Although you might not realize it, you are actually losing a good deal of water when you travel. Bring one water bottle every where you go. Stay confident that what you are doing is helping you achieve your goals.
