Merced Skimmer's group set-up
Our group set up is designed to group athletes of similar age and ability together. This is a progressive program designed to challenge the athletes and give them the opportunity to achieve their individual goals.

Introductory / Fitness Track

Waders: This is the entry-level group and introduction to the Skimmers program

Ages: 8 & Under

Group Entry Requirements

    Must be able to:

  • Complete a 25-yard swim unassisted
  • Float on their back unassisted

Objectives:

  • 1. Teach children proper safety and rules around the pool.
  • 2. Learn the fundamental skills of freestyle and backstroke.  This includes proper body position, kick, arms, and breathing.
  • 3. Provide a positive environment where children learn to swim, have fun, and want to make swimming an enjoyable lifelong sport.

Swim Meets:

  • Inter squad Swimming meets.

Recommended Training Days

  • Two to three days per week but swimmers can practice all five days.

Equipment:

  • Kickboard will be provided.
  • Please bring swimsuit, goggles, and towel.

Goals to Graduate to the Next Level

    Must be able to:

  • Perform the basic fundamentals of freestyle and backstroke.
  • Swim 25 yards of backstroke.
  • Swim 25 yards of freestyle using rhythmic breathing.
  • Streamline glide off wall into freestyle.

Gulls: This is the next level after a swimmer can complete the goals of the Waders.  This group will continue to work on improving technique of both freestyle and backstroke. The Gulls will also be introduced to the proper 

Ages: 8 & Under

Group Entry Requirements:

    Must be able to:

  • Perform the basic fundamentals of freestyle and backstroke.
  • Swim 25 yards of freestyle with side breathing.
  • Swim 25 yards of backstroke.
  • Streamline glide off wall into freestyle.

Objectives:

  • 1.  Teach legal freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke.
  • 2.  Introduce the swimmer to the fundamentals of starts and turns.
  • 3.  Teach the swimmer to read and use a pace clock.
  • 4. Provide a positive environment where children learn to swim, have fun, and want to make swimming an enjoyable lifelong sport.

Swim Meets:

  • Skimmer inter squad meets
  • Summer league meets.  

Recommended Training Days:

  • Two to three days per week but swimmers can practice all five days.

Equipment:

  • Kickboard and pull buoy will be provided.
  • Please bring swimsuit, goggles, and towel.

Goals to Graduate to the Next Level

    Must be able to:

  • Read and use a pace clock.
  • Swim 50 yards of freestyle.
  • Kick 6 x 50’s on 1:30.
  • Legally perform all strokes.
  • Streamline off of wall with three dolphin kicks.
  • Swim 50 yards of backstroke.

Terns: The Terns will continue to focus on improving technique through various stroke drills.  They will also work on swimming longer sets and distances with legal technique.

Ages: 8 to 10 years old

Group Entry Requirements

    Must be able to:

  • Read and use pace clock.
  • Legally perform all strokes.
  • Kick 6 x 50’s on 1:45.

Objectives:

  • 1. Improve and maintain stroke technique for longer distances in the freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke.
  • 2. Learn to dive correctly from a starting block and perform correct turns.
  • 3.  Learn to swim an individual medley with correct turns.3. To teach the swimmer to read and use a pace clock
  • 4. Provide a positive environment where children learn to swim, have fun, and want to make swimming an enjoyable lifelong sport.

Swim Meets:

  • Inter squad Meets
  • Summer League Meets
  • USA Swimming Meets.

Recommended Training Days:

  • Four days per week but swimmers can attend all five days of practice.

Equipment:

  • Kickboard and pull buoy will be provided.
  • Swimmers may also use fins.
  • Please bring swimsuit, goggles, and towel.

Goals to Graduate to the Next Level

    Must be able to:

  • Kick 6 x 50’s on 1:15.
  • Swim 6 x 100 individual medleys on the 2:00.
  • Swim 6 x 100 freestyle on 1:40 interval.

Auks: The objective of this group is to continue to improve stroke technique and be able to maintain it over the course of longer more intense sets and workouts.

Ages: 10 to 14 years old

Group Entry Requirements:

    Must be able to:

  • Kick 6 x 50’s on 1:15
  • Swim 6 x 100 freestyle on 1:40
  • Swim 6 x 100 Individual Medleys (IM) on 2:00 (Maintain correct stroke technique).

Objectives:

  • 1. Provide a higher level of training for swimmers who are not moving up to the competitive track.
  • 2.  Learn race strategy and prepare swimmers for high school swimming.
  • 3.  Provide a positive environment where children learn to swim, have fun, and want to make swimming an enjoyable lifelong sport.

Swim Meets:

  • Inter squad Meets
  • Summer League Meets
  • USA Swimming Meets.

Recommended Training Days:

  • Four days per week but swimmers can attend all five.

Equipment:

  • Kickboard and pull buoy will be provided.
  • Swimmers may also use fins.
  • Please bring swimsuit, goggles, and towel.

Goals to Graduate to the Next Level

    Must be able to:

  • Kick 10 x 50’s on 1:00.
  • Complete workouts > 3500 yards.
  • Swim 6 x 100’s free on 1:30 interval.
  • Swim 6 x 100 Individual medleys on 1:45 interval.

 

Jr. Olympic Track

Blue: This is the first level in the Jr. Olympic track. This group will continue to focus on developing technique while building endurance, increasing speed, and improving race strategy to prepare for a high level of swimming

Ages: 8 to 12 years old

Group Entry Requirements

    Must be able to:

  • Read/use pace clock.
  • Legally perform all strokes.
  • Kick 6 x 50’s on 1:20.
  • Competed in at least four USA swimming meets.
  • Complete workouts of >3000 yards.

Objectives:

  • 1. Improve technique, build endurance, and race speed.
  • 2.  Learn race strategy and prepare for Jr. Olympics.
  • 3.  Provide a positive environment where children learn to swim, have fun, and want to make swimming an enjoyable lifelong sport.

Swim Meets:

  • Inter squad meets
  • USA swimming meets
  • Jr. Olympic meets

Recommended Training Days

  • Five days per week.

Equipment:

  • Kickboard
  • Pull buoy

    Encouraged to purchase the following equipment:

  • Swim bag
  • Snorkel
  • Fins

  • Kick 10 x 50’s on the 1:00 interval.
  • Swim 6 x 100’s freestyle on 1:30 interval.
  • Swim 6 x 100 individual medley’s (IM) on 1:45 interval.
  • Complete workouts of >3500 yards.  .

Silver: The Silver group must meet all of the Blue group objectives. Focus will continue to be on technique, race strategy, building endurance and improving speed. Emphasis will also be placed on preparing swimmers for high school and senior level swimming.

Ages: 12 to 14 years old

Group Entry Requirements:

    Must be able to:

  • Kick 10 x 50’s on the 1:00 interval.
  • Swim 6 x 100’s freestyle on the 1:00 interval.
  • Complete workouts of >3500 yards.

Objectives:

  • 1. Improve technique, build endurance, and race speed.
  • 2.  Learn race strategy and prepare for Jr. Olympics.
  • 3.  Prepare swimmers for high school and senior level swimming.
  • 4.  Provide a positive environment where children learn to swim, have fun, and want to make swimming an enjoyable lifelong sport.

Swim Meets:

  • Inter squad meets
  • USA swimming meets
  • Jr. Olympic meets

Recommended Training Days

  • Five days per week.

Equipment:

  • Kickboard
  • Pull buoy

Goals to Graduate to the Next Level

    Must be able to:

  • Kick 10 x 50’s on the :50 interval.
  • Swim 6 x 100’s individual medley’s (IM) on 1:30 interval.
  • Swim 6 x 100’s freestyle on 1:20 interval.
  • Complete workouts >4500 yards

Gold: This is the highest level of swimming offered at Skimmers.  Swimmers are able to complete all of the silver level requirements.  Focus is now on taking swimmers to the next level and prepares them for higher levels of USA swimming college swimming.

Ages: 14 & older

Group Entry Requirements

    Must be able to:

  • Complete all of the silver graduation requirements.

Objectives:

  • 1. Improve technique, build endurance, and race speed.
  • 2.  Learn race strategy and prepare for higher levels of USA swimming and college swimming.
  • 4.  Provide a positive environment where children learn to swim, have fun, and want to make swimming an enjoyable lifelong sport.

Swim Meets:

  • USA Swimming Meets.

Recommended Training Days

  • Five days per week.

Equipment:

  • Kickboard
  • Pull buoy

Encouraged to purchase the following equipment:

  • Swim bag
  • Snorkel

Other Swimming Programs

 

High school Pre Season: The high school program accommodates all levels of swimmers from novice to experienced, and focuses on enhancing and strengthening stroke technique and preparing for the upcoming high school swim season.

Ages:

  • Current high school students

Dates:

  • November 16th to February 8th

Cost:

  • $40 per month
  • $100 for entire winter season

Objectives:

  • 1. Prepare swimmer for the upcoming high school season.
  • 2.  Provide a positive environment where children learn to swim, have fun, and want to make swimming an enjoyable lifelong sport.

Swim Meets:

  • Inter squad meets.

Training Days

  • Monday thru Thursday 6:00 – 7:30 pm
  • Friday 6:00 – 7:00 pm

Equipment:

  • Kickboard
  • Pull buoy

Masters: The master program is for all level of swimmers who are 18 and older. 

Ages:

  • Over 18 years’ old

Cost:

  • $30 per month ($20 for Skimmer parents)

Objectives:

Swim Meets:

  • Inter squad meets.

Training Days

  • Monday thru Friday 6:00 – 7:30 pm

Practice Length:

  • One hour and thirty minutes
