Aquatic Program Levels

 Carmel Aqautic Center Lessons Programs

Welcome to the Carmel Aquatic Center lessons program. Below is a description of the levels in our lessons program. These written descriptions include all the skills our instructors will cover over the course of a session. Included below the written description is the skill chart that we use to determine if your child will be advancing to the next level. These skill charts can also be found on each of the report cards your child will receive at the end of each lessons session.

During our lessons we utilize a plethora of different techniques to teach, and reinforce, the skills we teach. Equipment and games will be used regularly to encourage the growth of your child.

Beginner Level Swim Lessons

Ratio: 1 Instructor for every 3-4 kids

In this level, swimmers will get an introduction to water skills.  They will learn the basics of floating on their front and back, paddling/kicking on their front and back, and putting their face in the water and blowing bubbles.  To move into the Beginner Plus group a swimmer must be able to put their face in the water, float on the front and back comfortably with assistance, and paddle/kick on their front and back with assistance.  With the younger ages of 3-5 it may take a few sessions in the beginner level before they move up to the next level.

During this level, we understand that some kids may not be comfortable with placing their face in the water.  We will practice with them each day and try each day to get them more and more comfortable with doing that.

Beginner Plus Level Swim Lessons

In this level, swimmers will continue and improve upon the skills learned in the Beginner level. The front float and paddle with have the swimmer placing their face in and keeping it there for as much as they are able.  They will begin to learn glides, streamlines, and treading water. The swimmer will also learn and gain the confidence to swim without instructor assistance.

Intermediate Level Swim Lessons

Ratio: 1 instructor for every 3-4 kids

In this level, swimmers will review skills taught in the beginner levels.  They will take the unassisted front paddle and back paddle they learned in the beginner plus level and refine those skills to freestyle and backstroke.  They will begin to learn the term rotary breathing, or breathing to the side.  They will also start to learn the basics of breaststroke kick.

Intermediate Plus Level Swim Lessons

In this level swimmers will continue to add to the skills they learned in previous lessons. They will fully combine rotary breathing with their freestyle and use it to go across the pool. They will continue to improve upon their backstroke that they started in Intermediate. They will learn to take their glides underwater to prepare for later skills. They will also be introduced to the basics of dolphin kick and breaststroke arms.

In this level, swimmers will continue to refine their freestyle and backstroke.  They will put the breaststroke arms together with the breaststroke kick to swim breaststroke.  They will learn the butterfly stroke that involves the symmetrical overarm movement and combine it with the dolphin kick.  They will also take the dolphin kick and add it to their underwaters to continue progressing on that skill.

Stroke Technique and Swim Club Prep

There will be times during practices where the swimmers will be learning swim techniques outside of the water. When learning a new stroke or drill it gives the swimmers a chance to understand and see proper technique before performing in water. This gives the instructor a chance to improve the technique of all the swimmers as well.

When learning new strokes and techniques in the water the swimmers may only swim half way (12.5 yards) or one length (25 yards). This will help the instructors to correct and enhance each drill/technique while learning the stroke performed in water. This class is not designed to build long endurance sets or workouts as the swimmers will learn that when joining the Swim Club Prep classes.

Swim Club Prep

Ratio: 1 instructor for every 7-8 students

Swim Club Prep is a class designed for swimmers who wi have experience being on a swim team and is 8 years old and older.  During this class, swimmers will be participating in a "swim team" practice style class.  They will be working on a lot of endurance and some stroke technique.  This is class should push kids so that they can be on the swim club.

In this class the swimmer will also learn the Open turn used in breaststroke and butterfly. Along with this, they will add the flip turn they learned with stroke technique to their freestyle and backstroke regularly.
