Swim Meet Basics

What to bring

  • Team Cap, Goggles, Competition Swimsuit, Warm up Swimsuit
  • Water/Drinks
  • Snacks/Food
  • Warm clothes,Shoes/FlipFlops and blankets
  • Towels
  • Camping chairs (for outdoor meets)
  • Sharpie for writing events on arm
  • Things to do in between events – books, games, etc.

Before the Meet Starts:

  • Arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled warm-up time
  • Look for familiar faces, the team tries to sit together
  • Swimmers check in with the coach to let them know you have arrived
  • Warm up with the team
  • Parents can usually purchase heat sheets in the lobby or concessions area to highlight your swimmer's events
  • Write events with a Sharpie on the swimmer

During the Meet:

  • Swimmers check in with the coach before each event
  • Swimmers need to know if they report directly to their lane or to a heating area
  • Swim each race
  • Swimmers check in with the coach after each event
  • Swimmers do recovery swimming in the "warm down" pool or lanes if available
  • Dress warmly between each event (parkas, footwear, etc.)

Please Note:

According to USA Swimming rules (because of insurance purposes), parents are NOT allowed on deck unless they are serving in an official capacity. Similarly, all questions concerning meet results, an officiating call, or the conduct of a meet, should be referred to a coach. He or she in turn, will pursue the matter through the proper channels.
