PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 2017-2018
Welcome on behalf of the Board of Directors, Coaches and staff to all new and returning members of the Edmonton Keyano Swim Club! I have the privilege of serving as President of our club, alongside each board and committee member. Our club has a rich history and once again our current and alumni athletes showed their abilities on the national/international stage during this Summer.
Registration is open and has already exceeded last year's opening and August enrollment numbers. Thank you Bears! With registration you will notice a few changes that many members requested: the Waterpark event is no longer part of the program; and Credit Card convenience fees will no longer be charged. Currently, staff is finalizing preparations towards the first day our swimmers take to the water this season, which I know I am looking forward to.
Our club continues to grow with over 360 aquatic members taking to the water last season. With that growth there are challenges as pool shutdowns managed by the City continue and some of our groups and swimmers move to accommodate this. Thank you for your patience and flexibility with these changes!
We have an excellent coaching staff returning to serve our swimmers, with more coaches to support every level in our Club this season. It would have been ideal to have a new head coach secured by September and on-deck for the beginning of the 2017-18 season. That was the goal. The recruitment process took approximately 30 candidates who applied from locations provincially, nationally and internationally and reduced it to a handful of candidates with the proper qualifications. Through the months of July and August many interviews occurred involving both the Search and Selection Committee and subsequently Board members resulting in a select candidate pool. We are now in the final stages of the recruitment. Whilst it is a lengthy process, where confidentiality is required, it is the right one to follow and the vast amount of time and effort that members and staff continue to devote to it is recognized and greatly appreciated. To ensure consistency and stability for our Club, Chris Nelson has stepped up and demonstrated his ability to undertake the Head Coach role during this period of transition. We are extremely grateful to Chris, and as such, he will be recognized as our interim Head Coach, until such time as the new Head Coach is formally appointed.
I would like to thank the many members, associates and volunteers for their time and dedication to the swimmers and our Club. Throughout the last season, wherever help was needed to get the job done, members stepped up and made each of our events a success. Without this, we would be unable to offer the level of programming that makes our club great! I would like to personally thank each and every one of you.
For this season, Keyano has been awarded the Northern Alberta Provincials Long Course in June by Swim Alberta and Canadian Swimming Trials at the end of July, which will add to the number of meets our club will host along with our flagship meets, Blue Bears and EKI which posted their best attendance last year. There will be great opportunities to meet other members and continue the tradition of volunteering to provide exceptional events for our swimmers.
Once again, welcome to the Edmonton Keyano Swim Club family. Prepare for an exciting year, excellent swimming, amazing coaches and please get involved! Go Bears!
