Team Levels

Newington Swim Club Team Level Descriptions

The following descriptions are informational guidelines to inform placement decisions by coaching staff for Newington Swim Club.  The age ranges provided are typical of swimmers in that level, but are flexible in that once swimmers master the skills and expectations in one level, they may be moved to an advanced level regardless of age.  The skills and expectations are closely aligned to the Red Cross standard descriptions given. 

Red Team

This group is primarily designed for swimmers ages 5 & up

Entry Standard: Must be able to complete 25 yards (one pool length), unassisted, of backstroke and rotary breathing freestyle. This minimum entry standard is equivalent to a Red Cross Level 4 Swimmer.  The coaching for Red Level swimmers will focus on learning the swimming skills necessary to have a solid foundation in the sport, including the basics of all four competitive strokes:  freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke and butterfly.  Swimmers will have fun while competing regionally and participating in team building activities, all aimed at developing a lifelong love of swimming. The athletes in this group are required to attend at least 2 of the 3 practices each week. Spring and summer participation is recommended.

Bronze Team

This group is primarily designed for swimmers 9-18. 

Entry Standard: Must be able to complete 50 yards, unassisted, in all four competitive strokes. This minimum entry standard is equivalent to a Red Cross Level 5/6 Swimmer.  The coaching for Bronze Level swimmers will focus on refining the major skill components of each start, stroke, turn and finish, and developing swimming endurance and racing technique. Swimmers will have fun while competing regionally and participating in team building activities, all aimed at enhancing a lifelong love of swimming. In addition, swimmers should participate in a basic dry-land training program designed to build general body strength, enhance technique and improve overall flexibility. The athletes in this group are required to attend at least 3 of the 4 practices each week.  Spring and summer participation is highly recommended.

Silver Team

This group is primarily designed for swimmers: 12-18.

Entry Standard: Must be able to complete 100 yards, unassisted, in all four competitive strokes within a time standard, including racing dives and flip turns, and have the endurance to keep up with same level swimmers. This minimum entry standard is equivalent to a Red Cross Level 6/7 Swimmer. Swimmers should have a strong competitive swimming foundation and a love of swimming.  The coaching for Silver Level swimmers will focus on refining competitive swimming skills, and developing swimming endurance and racing technique to reach championship and Regional time standards. Swimmers will have fun while competing regionally and participating in team building activities. In addition, swimmers should participate in a basic dry-land training program designed to build general body strength, enhance technique and improve overall flexibility. The athletes in this group are required to attend at least 3 of the 4 practices each week.  Spring and summer participation is highly recommended.

Gold/Platinum

This group is primarily designed for swimmers 14-18.

Entry Standard: Must be able to complete 100 yards, unassisted, in all four competitive strokes within a time standard, including racing dives and flip turns, and have the endurance to keep up with same level swimmers. This minimum entry standard is equivalent to a Red Cross Level 7 Swimmer. Swimmers must have a strong competitive swimming foundation and a love of swimming.  The coaching for Gold/Platinum Level swimmers will focus on providing swimmers with the physical and technical fitness necessary to compete in Championships, Regionals, Age Groups, state championships and beyond.  Swimmers will have fun while competing regularly and participating in team building activities. In addition, swimmers should participate in a basic dry-land training program designed to build general body strength, enhance technique and improve overall flexibility. The athletes in this group are required to attend at least 3 of the 4 practices each week.  Spring and summer participation is highly recommended.
