Martin County Swimming has been teaching children of all ages to swim competitively since 1973.  Three head coaches have led the team over the years, including founding coach Gary Shelt (1973 to 1980); coach Dick Wells (1980 to 1995) and current coach, Jim  McCombs.

Jim  McCombs - Seniors Head Coach (email)

Coach  McCombs graduated from the Milford Area Senior High School in New Hampshire in 1977.  Coach  McCombs competed in club swimming and also  with the U.S. Army, making the 1980 Olympic Trial Cuts in the 100, 200, 500, and 1650 Freestyle.  Unfortunately, the USA boycotted the 1980 Olympics.  His 30+ year coaching career has taken him from New Hampshire to Georgia and Florida.  Coach  McCombs has been the Head Coach of Martin County Swimming since 1995 and also serves as the Head Coach of the Martin County High School Swim Team.  Currently, Coach Jim also serves on the Florida Gold Coast Swimming LSC Board of Directors as the Administrative Vice Chairman.

Gordon Laing, Jr. - Juniors Swim Coach (email)

Coach Laing was a member of the swim team at North Plainfield High School in New Jersey.  He has over 15 years coaching experience and has been Martin County Swimming Juniors Coach since 2002.  Coach Laing also serves as the Martin County High School Swim Team Assistant Coach.

Barbara Proctor - Age Group Coach (email)

Coach Proctor believes that swimming is an important skill and sport, so when she realized there was no swimming program available for the kids at the Naval Air Station in Keflavik, Iceland where she was stationed with her husband, she started a Learn to Swim Program.  In time, she was able to assist in setting up a base Swim Team for military families, who swam against the local Icelandic swim teams.  When the Proctor family’s tour in Iceland ended, she moved back to Maine with her family.  While teaching at the YMCA, the University of New England recruited Coach Proctor to run their entire swim program, which she did for six years.  She began coaching when her oldest child began swimming at age 6, so she has been coaching and teaching swimming for over 10 years.  Coach Proctor loves to watch the kids get better and better in the pool!

Michael Murray – Diving Coach (email)

Coach Murray participated on the swim and dive teams at Miami High School and was on the dive team in college at California State-Fullerton.  Coach Murray has been a USA Diving Coach since 2009 and is also a Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) dive coach, serving as Martin County High School’s dive coach.
