ATAC is the standard of excellence in Tallahassee swimming and one of the top teams in the country. It initially began as the Tallahassee Swim Team (TST) in 1966 and evolved into the Area Tallahassee Aquatic club (ATAC) in 1979. Our swimmers have become high school state champions, Junior and Senior National qualifiers, Olympic Trial qualifiers, national Top-16 qualifiers, and Florida All-Star Team members. The program is sponsored by the City of Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department and is a member of United States Swimming.
A city sponsored (through the Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department), public access competitive swim team sanctioned through United States Swimming as the national governing body. ATAC has been in existence since 1966 first as the Tallahassee Swim Team and then in 1979 as the Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club.
ATAC is a competitive swim team for swimmers 5 years old to adults. Offerings include a progressive grouping by ability levels in the general competitive program, a special needs program for children and adults through the Challenger program, and a high school conditioning program.
To provide a competitive swimming experience for all ages through professional education and instruction emphasizing successful experiences on a daily basis.
The ATAC program has been evolving over the last few years to a true partnership between the City of Tallahassee and Performance Enhancement Enterprises, a Florida sports consulting corporation. The goal has been to enable the program to maintain a high degree of professionalism in services and maximize all participants’ opportunities to excel and enjoy successful experiences at every level of competitive swimming.
The intent of the formation of this relationship in 1998 was to bring the ATAC program into the realm of a national team structure of USS Swimming, yet remain a public access program for the community. Having professional direction and flexibility (through Performance Enhancement directed by Terry Maul) coupled with public (City) support insures that the program will always remain a public access program as well as enjoying the opportunity to compete as a viable entity in the structure of US Swimming (USS). This philosophy (partnership) is somewhat unique and enviable in the swimming communities across the country, but also crucial in the current economic environment in providing programs to maximize the opportunities and offerings that can be attained through a public service offering.
In 1998 a limited partnership was established between the Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department and Performance Enhancement. The goal at that time was to increase participation to the point that the program was financially capable of sustaining itself in direct costs. Once this was accomplished, Performance Enhancement Enterprises would assume the costs associated with staffing, billing, revenue collection, etc., as well as the general administration of the program in conjunction with the Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department's oversight. This change in the relationship would be beneficial to both the City, in continuing it's support for a successful public service program, and the Contractor (Performance Enhancement), by having the flexibility to position the appropriate staffing needs and levels of expertise necessary in line with the market in US Swimming, thus capturing the overall goals set down by all parties in 1998.
Goal for the year: Remind yourself, "I can. and I will."
