Visiting Swimmers

We welcome visiting swimmers! Visitors MUST contact Coach David Miner prior to arrival. To swim in our workouts, you must be a current member of U.S. Masters Swimming, pay a $7 drop-in fee, and sign a Sarasota Sharks waiver. Please do not show up expecting to swim if you haven’t contacted the coach in advance.

Our Workout Groups

We have three workout groups: Gold, Black, and White, and all are accommodated during our 90-minute practice time slots, with the exception of the 5:30 a.m. time slot and Saturday’s pool practice, which are attended primarily by Gold group swimmers.

Our Practice Schedule

We have a practice time for everyone!

NOTE: On Saturdays we offer both a pool and open water practice. Both are confirmed via email on Thursday or Friday due to possible cancelations or scheduling conflicts. Visiting swimmers should contact the coach directly.

Our Workouts

Traveling? Doing your own thing? Need a workout? Want a sneak peek at tomorrow’s workout? Go to Sharks Masters Gold Workout Bog in the Member Blogs section of usms.org.

You can subscribe and have the workouts delivered to your email inbox or access them online when you are traveling. To receive the workouts via email, you must first configure your free My USMS account at usms.org.

To configure My USMS:

  1. Go to www.usms.org
  2. Click on the My USMS tab in the upper right hand corner (or the link in the left menu)
  3. Follow the short membership verification process, which utilizes a confirmation email.

Also, USMS has published a step-by-step pictorial on how to activate your MyUSMS account and sign up for the Fitness Logs (FLOGs)

Once confirmed, you can click on My USMS whenever you visit the site and immediately view all your swims in one place: individual results, relays, Top 10, All-Americans, photos, etc. You can manage your USMS membership and download a copy of your card. All your stuff is in one place. This feature ALONE is worth the few minutes it takes to configure. Other benefits include the ability to surf the member discussion groups and post your own comments. Connect with thousands of masters swimmers across the country. You can subscribe to various blogs or even start your own blog if you have a hankering.

Once you are all set up and logged in, to find the workout blog:

  1. Click on Member Blogs in the upper lefthand corner. You may see the blog right away, near the top of the list, since he posts daily. If you see it in the list, click on it to go to the main blog page.
  2. If it is not on the first page, click on the page buttons on the lower right–the blog will be within the first few pages.
  3. To subscribe to the blog and have the workout delivered via email, click the Subscribe link in the Options menu on the left.

Open Water Saturdays

Our open water group meets at the far northern end of the parking lot at the Siesta Key Beach and walks to the blue lifeguard stand. All levels are welcome. However, for safety reasons:

  • Check in with Laura or David during the week if you are joining the group for the first time.
  • Like all SYSM workouts, USMS membership is required.
  • This is a group swim—please bring a team-player attitude.
  • Brightly colored swim caps are required for all swimmers. The best colors are bright/neon pink, yellow, orange, or red. Avoid white, silver, blue and green, which blend in with waves and water.
  • Fins are required for those swimmers who cannot keep up with one of the pods.
  • When the water dips below 70 F, wetsuits will be required, unless you have proven cold-water swimming experience.

This is a great way to get some open water experience while having fun with the group. If you are focused solely your individual performance, this practice might not be for you. We expect swimmers to buddy up and watch out for each other. There are almost always two or three different pods for a variety of swimming speeds. Breakfast afterward!

Laura confirms this practice with an email on Friday. However, shifting weather and water conditions might cause practice to be canceled after that email. Unless you’re a registered member of SYSM, you won’t get any email updates. However, for night-before or day-of updates, you can either follow us on Twitter at @SharksMasters.
