SAS Financial Aid Policy
SPOKANE AREA SWIMMING TEAM - FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE POLICY
Approved by: SAS Board of Directors
Purpose: This policy is intended to regulate the granting of financial assistance in the form of fee reductions for individuals and families financially unable to pay the established program fee
Philosophy: SAS strongly believes that all citizens should have the opportunity to participate on a competitive swim team regardless of financial status.
A. Must be a year round team swimmer.
B. To qualify for this scholarship, swimmers must demonstrate financial need through either of the following:
a. applicant’s family must qualify for Free or Reduced Price lunches thru the National School
Lunch Program (NSLP)
b. a life changing event (swimmer must have been a member in good standing for at least 6 months
prior to request)
C. Swimmers must attend at least 70% of all monthly practices for available for their assigned practice group.
D. Monthly dues are always paid in advance. The scholarship dollars that are awarded will be applied to your account after you pay your portion of the dues. Failure to pay your portion by the 5th of each month may result in loss of your scholarship.
E. Swimmers shall demonstrate a firm commitment to their own development as a swimmer as well as to the team. Interested applicants or their family members should write a short statement indicating:
a. Why their swimmer wants to swim
b. How the swimmer will demonstrate their commitment to their own development as a swimmer.
c. How the swimmer will demonstrate their commitment to the team.
F. Swimmers and family members must fulfill volunteer & fundraising requirements over the course of the year. Swimmers not participating in fund raising activities will be assessed fees without discount.
G. Discounts will apply to Swim Team Training Fees & Swim Team Administrative Fees. SAS will not cover the costs associated with the YMCA membership. SAS will not cover the costs associated with other Swimming organizations (e.g. USA-Swimming) however, USA Swimming Membership fees will be assessed at a deeply discounted rate. SAS will not cover any costs associated with meet entry fees or required equipment. Scholarship recipients will not eligible for any other (family) discounts. Applicants who qualify for Free or Reduced Price lunches thru NSLP will be offered the following fee schedule:
For 2017-2018 Season:
Seniors $180 $135 $90
II. Verification (Either A or B, below)
A. A Letter from the appropriate school district verifying participation in the Free or Reduced Price NSLP for either the current or upcoming school year. link to 2015-2016 USDA eligibility guidelines
B. A completed application for Free or Reduced Price Lunches from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) web site link to USDA Application. The application must be completed and signed by an adult member of the household.
C. Updated verification requirements must be met before SAS services are provided during SAS’s then current fiscal year. SAS’s fiscal year runs from September 1st to August 31st.
A. Individuals may apply for Financial Assistance by contacting the SAS Treasurer and by producing one of the above forms of verification.
B. Application must be made at least two weeks prior to the program start date.
C. The SAS Board of Directors shall review the Financial Assistance Applications. All information provided shall be kept confidential.
D. All applications must allow two weeks for processing. Applicants will be notified by email or phone of their funding status.
IV. Guidelines For Approval/Denial
General Guidelines for the reduction of fees.
A. Financial Assistance Application must contain complete and true information. Incomplete or falsified information shall result in denial of requests.
B. Applicants must meet the requirements of eligibility described in Section I, Eligibility.
C. Financial assistance may be denied when granting such assistance shall have a significant detrimental effect on the operation of the program.
D. Financial assistance shall not be granted for Meet Entries, YMCA Memberships, USA-Swimming Memberships, or Equipment Purchase.
E. All program participants granted financial assistance shall remain in good standing with program instructors and SAS. Unsportsmanlike conduct and/or conduct detrimental to the program shall be grounds for removal of all financial assistance present and future.
F. This list shall not be considered all-inclusive, and SAS reserves the right to refuse financial assistance.
