Practice Groups

 All swimmers are welcome to join the Buehler Blue Marlins, however please keep in mind the following:

  • All swimmers must be able to swim 2 length of the pool front crawl and 2 length of the pool backstroke and have a positive team attitude.
  • All swim team members must be members of the Buehler YMCA (This is a YMCA of the USA competitive sports rule).
  • The Blue Marlins compete in both YMCA and USA Swimming meets. All YMCA meet fees are included in the swim team fees. Participation in USA Swimming meets is optional. There is an additional charge for USA Swimming registration and meet entries.
  • All swimmers must be members of the Buehler YMCA by Nov. 30 to be eligible for championship meets (This is a YMCA of the USA competitive sports rule).
  • To be eligible for the Short Course Championship, you must swim in three closed YMCA meets and one sanctioned championship meet.
  • Swimmers will be placed in practice groups and lanes depending on their skill level. Coaches have the final decision on where swimmers will be placed.
  • Swimmers wishing to move to the next group need approval from the coaches.

 

Turquoise Marlins
This group is for all swimmers from beginner to intermediate.  Swimmers may not be quite ready to compete, but want to be part of the swim team and work on improving their strokes.  Swimmers must be able to complete two lengths of freestyle and two lengths of backstroke.  Meets are not required, but home meets are recommended.  coaches recommend attending both practices to get the most benefit from this group.

Atlantic & Pacific Marlins
This group is for swimmers that are intermediate.  Swimmers have competitive swimming experience and have mastered the 4 competitive strokes.  Focus is on learning the rules of the sport, developing foundational skills (streamline, kicking, technique), and learning how enjoyable the sport is.  Swimmers are expected to attend all home meets and all Championship meets that they qualified for at the end of the season.  Swimmers should be able to complete the following sets without stopping during  each set:

6 x 50 Free        6 x 50 Back

6 x 50 Breast     6 x 50 Fly

6 x 50 Kick        6 x 50 IM

Striped Marlins 
This group is for swimmers from intermediate to advance.  Swimmers have competitive swimming experience and mastered the 4 competitive strokes.  swimmers have the ability to do pace work and interval training.  Swimmers are expected to attend both dry land training and pool training.  Swimmers are expected to attend all home meets, 50% of the away meets, and all Championship Meets that they qualified for at the end of the season.

Swimmers must have achieved 4 of the 6 following times in a short course, 25-yard pool:

50 Free    35.55            50 Back    43.55

50 Breast  48.55            50 Fly      44.55

100 IM      1:35.55         100 Free  1:23.05

Black Marlins 
This group is for swimmers from intermediate to advance.  Swimmers have competitive swimming experience, are able to swim all 4 competitive strokes efficiently, have the ability to do pace work and interval training using a pace clock, and are able to commit to a rigorous workout program, including weights (for swimmers 12 and over), dry land and pool training.  Swimmers are required to attended all home swim meets, 50% of the away meets, and all Championship Meets that they qualified for at the end of the season.

Swimmers must have achieved 5 of the 7 following times in a short course, 25-yard pool and be the minimum age of 12:

50 Free     29.55            100 Back  1:17.55

100 Breast 1:27.55         100 Fly     1:20.05

100 Free    1:05.05         200 IM      2:52.05

200 Free    2:29.55
