Chicago Smelts Community Involvement
Gill Park Recreation Center
Over the past 20+ years the Chicago Smelts have developed a great relationship with Gill Park Recreation Center. We participate in the Gill Park Advisory Council, attend Chicago Park District meetings in support of Gill Park and its programs, donate pool equipment, and raise money to support the Gill Park Gators youth swim team.
Center on Halsted
Since its inception in 2007 the Chicago Smelts have been supporting the Center on Halsted. The Center is the Midwest's most comprehensive community center dedicated to advancing community and securing the health and well-being of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) people of Chicagoland. More than 1,000 community members visit the Center every day, located in the heart of Chicago's Lakeview Neighborhood.
Proud to Run
A part of Chicago’s LGBTQ Pride Week activities since 1982, Proud to Run (PTR) is an annual 10K run & 5K run/walk along the lakefront, focused on celebrating pride in a healthy way and raising funds to support the greater Chicago area LGBTQ community. In 2016 we had a record turnout of more than 1,800 registrants. Overall, more than 2,200 people participated in last year’s event by running, walking, volunteering and sponsoring.
Howard Brown Health Center
The Chicago Smelts are strong supporters of Howard Brown Health Center. Howard Brown Health Center was founded in 1974 and is now one of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health and social services organizations. The agency serves more than 18,000 adults and youth each year focused around seven major programmatic divisions: primary medical care, behavioral health, research, HIV/STD prevention, youth services, elder services, and community initiatives.
Union League Boys and Girls Clubs "Learn to Swim" Program
The Chicago Smelts work with the Boys and Girls Clubs Learn to Swim program. Their mission is to teach Chicago's youth to be safe and have fun in the water as well as teach techniques needed to swim competitively. $10 donated to Learn to Swim provides 1 hour of swimming lessons for 6 kids.
Northwestern University Women's Swimming & Diving Team "Breaststroke 4 Breast Cancer"
Since 2011 the Chicago Smelts have participated in this hour-long, non-stop breaststroke relay alongside fellow swimmers from the Chicago area. We're proud to be part of this grass-roots effort to raise funds for the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
