Training Groups

The Head Swim Coach will assign your swimmer to the appropriate practice group so that swimmers train with other swimmers of a similar age and ability-level.  Please talk to our head swim coach, Casey Grave, if you have questions about the practice groups.

Blue:  Swimmers ages 5-9 will be evaluated for Blue Group

Requirements 

  • Swim 25 yards of continuous freestyle, demonstrating rotary breathing and good balance in the water in under 1:00 minute without stopping.
  • Swim 25 yards of continuous backstroke, demonstrating good balance in the water in under 1:00 minute without stopping.
  • Perform 25 yards of strong freestyle kick.
  • Must be physically and emotionally mature enough to handle a 30 minute practice independent of parents.
  • Refining of the four strokes and having fun are the main points of emphasize.
  • Swimmers will also begin to focus more on proper turns and starts
  • The Head Coach reserves the right to place any swimmer in any group based on the best interest of the individual.

Practice Attendance

For regular improvement, swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend a minimum of 3 practices offered per week.

Meet Attendance

Swimmers are encouraged to attend one meet per month and at least 3 YMCA meets throughout the short-course season.  Swimmers are encouraged to participate in River Country during the summer.

Red:  Swimmers 7-11 will be evaluated for the red group

Requirements

  • Swim 25 yards of continuous backstroke, demonstrating good balance in the water under :50 seconds without stopping.
  • Perform 50 yards freestyle under 1:00 minute
  • Refining of the four strokes and having fun are the main points of emphasize
  • Swimmers will also continue to focus on the proper turns and starts, as well as pace clock training will be introduced
  • Perform 25 yards of strong freestyle kick.
  • Must be physically and emotionally mature enough to handle a 45 minute practice independent of parents.
  • The Head Coach reserves the right to place any swimmer in any group based on the best interest of the individual.

For regular improvement, swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend a minimum of 3 practices offered per week.

Meet Attendance

Swimmers are encouraged to attend one meet per month and at least 3 YMCA meets throughout the short-course season.  Swimmers are encouraged to participate in River Country during the summer. Parents participation in home and away meets is strongly encouraged to members of this group.

Bronze:  Intermediate Advanced Age Group

Requirements

  • Swimmers must be able to complete 50 yards freestyle with rotary breathing under :45 seconds.
  • Must also be able to swim 4x50's freestyle on the 1:05
  • Swimmer must also have basic knowledge of the breaststroke and butterfly.
  • Basic stroke and skills are emphasized along with pace clock training.
  • Swimmers will learn how to complete training on specific repetitions
  • The Head Coach reserves the right to place any swimmer in any group at any time based on the best interests of the individual.
  • Swimmers should achieve at least 2 Motivational "B" time standards based on the USA Swimming Motivational standards.  Those standards may be found here.
  • Swimmers in this training group must register for and maintain a USA swimming athlete card.

For regular improvement, swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend practice 3-4 times each week.

Silver:  Advanced Swim Group 

Requirements

  • Swimmers must be able to complete a legal I.M.
  • Perform a 50 yard freestyle in under 37.99 seconds
  • Perform 6x50's freestyle on the :50 second interval, or a 300 yard freestyle under 4 mins. :50 seconds
  • Swimmers receive enhanced swim training and are introduced to dry land at this level. 
  • The Head Coach reserves the right to place any swimmer in any group based on the best interest of the individual.
  • Swimmers in this training group must register and maintain a USA swimming athlete card.

Practice Attendance

For regular improvement, swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend 4-5 practice sessions each week.

Meet Attendance

Swimmers are encouraged to attend at least one meet per month and at least 3 YMCA meets during the short-course season.  Swimmers are encouraged to attend all USA Swim meets and River Country meets. Parents participation is strongly encouraged at home meets and away meets.

GOLD 1 - Age requirements 13& up and 80% Commitment to practices & meets

  • Gold 2 group is primarily for swimmers who are 13 and older, multi-sport athlete, and still want/need the cross-training.
  • Swimmers will continue to meet the standards of effort, attendance, attitude and long-range goal focus in the Gold 2 group.
  • Emphasis is on technique, dry land, power and in-water training. Regular attendance is necessary for scheduled practices and at least 3 meets are required.
  • Must also be able to swim a 200 I.M. in 3:00 mins, 50 freestyle under 31.5 seconds and 6x100’s on 1 min and 30 seconds. 
  • Swimmers in this training group must register and maintain a USA swimming athlete card.

​Practice Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary, as is participation in meets. Parent and swimmer participation in home meets and away meets is strongly encouraged. 

Meet Attendance

Swimmers are encouraged to attend at least one meet per month and at least 3 YMCA meets during the short-course season.  Swimmers are encouraged to attend all USA Swim meets and River Country meets. Parents participation is strongly encouraged at home meets and away meets.

GOLD 2Age Requirements 12& up/ Full commitment to practices & meets

  • Gold is primarily for swimmers with District/State Championship qualifying times and for serious swimmers committed to meet participation.
  • Stroke technique is strongly emphasized. Very high fitness levels are attained utilizing advanced pool and dry land training sessions.
  • This group also focuses on long- range goal-setting, training commitment, personal development, and responsibility.
  • Strong commitment, attendance, and personal responsibility are expected. Regular attendance is necessary, as is participation in at least 5 meets is required.
  • Must also swim a 200 I.M. in 2 minutes and 50 seconds, 50 freestyle under 30.5 seconds, and 6x100`s on the 1 min and 35 seconds
  • Swimmers in this training group must register and maintain a USA swimming athlete card.

​Practice Attendance

Regular attendance is highly encouraged and necessary for the continued development of the athlete, and as is participation in meets. 

Meet Attendance

Swimmers are encouraged to attend at least one meet per month and at least 3 YMCA meets during the short-course season.  Swimmers are encouraged to attend all USA Swim meets and River Country meets. Parents participation is strongly encouraged at home meets and away meets.

 

Platinum - Most advanced instructional level

  • Swimmers will continue to meet the high standards of effort, attendance, attitude and long range goal focus to remain in this group.

  • Emphasis is on advanced technique, dry land, power and in-water training.
  • Must be able to perform a 200 I.M. in 2:38.50 seconds
  • Must be able to swim 50 yard freestyle under 28.99 seconds
  • Must be able to swim 8x100's freestyle on the 1 minute and 25 seconds

Practice Attendance

For regular improvement, swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend 80 percent of practice sessions each week.

Meet Attendance

Swimmers are encouraged to attend at least one meet per month and at least 3 YMCA meets during the short-course season.  Swimmers are encouraged to attend all USA Swim meets and River Country meets. Parents participation is strongly encouraged at home meets and away meets.
