Time Standards

Both Michigan Swimming and USA Swimming publish time standards (cuts) by age-group, stroke and distance for female and male swimmers. These time standards allow swimmers to set goals and serve as a comparison against other swimmers nationally within the same age-group.

Time standards are great for goal setting and can be used as motivation to improve time.  However, parents are strongly encouraged to be patient and let your athlete improve at their own pace. Don't compare your child's success to another swimmer. All swimmers are individuals with unique abilities and each will develop at their own rate.

The Michigan Swimming and USA Swimming time standards are not related but may be shown combined on meet programs or heat sheets.

Michigan Swimming Time Standards

Michigan Swimming time standards are based upon the swimmers competing within Michigan and are used to determine awards at Michigan Swimming sanctioned meets and eligibility for end-of-season meets:

Short Course End-of-Season Meets

Swimmers qualify for individual events at end-of-season meets based upon their times as achieved during the qualifying period (from January 1 of the previous year to entry deadline for end-of-season meet).

The short course season ends with 3 meets:

Districts: All swimmers who have not achieved an actual time equal to or faster than the Q2 qualifying standard for an event during the qualifying period are eligible to enter that event at the District meet.

If the time swum at Districts is equal to or faster than the Q2 qualifying standard the swimmer is eligible to swim that event at Junior Olympics.

Junior Olympics (Q2): All swimmers who have achieved an actual time equal to or faster than the Q2 qualifying standards but slower than the Q1 qualifying standard during the qualifying period (January 1 of the previous year to today) are eligible to enter that event at the Junior Olympics meet.

If the time swum at Junior Olympics is equal to or faster than the Q1 qualifying standard the swimmer is eligible to swim that event at the State meet.

States (Q1): All swimmers who have achieved an actual time equal to or faster than the Q1 qualifying standard for an event during the qualifying period are eligible to enter that event at the State meet.

Swimmers may qualify for events at different short course end-of-season meets but may only swim the events for which they have qualified at that meet.

Example: Over the course of the short course season a swimmer’s fastest times are the following: 50 Free: 30.36 / 100 Free: 1:00.43 / 50 Fly: 36.84 / 50 Back: 36.51.

The time standards for this swimmer’s age-group are the following:

Q2

Q1

50 Free

30.59

28.09

100 Free

1:09.19

1:00.89

50 Fly

36.29

30.99

50 Back

37.09

32.69

This swimmer has qualified to swim the following events at the end-of-season meets:

Districts: 50 Fly - The time is slower than the Q2 time required for Junior Olympics

Junior Olympics: 50 Free and 50 Back - The times for these events are both faster than the Q2 time required for the JO meet but slower than the Q1 time required for the State meet.

States: 100 Free - The time is faster than the Q1 time required for the State meet.

Long Course End-of-Season Meets

The long course season ends with the State meet at the end of July

Swimmers qualify for individual events at end-of-season meets based upon their times as achieved during the qualifying period (from January 1 of the previous year to entry deadline for end-of-season meet).

USA Swimming Time Standards

USA Swimming publishes time standards based upon national ranking.  The.se are also referred to as age group motivational standards.  USA time standards may also be used to control the size of meets by setting minimum entry requirements (e.g., BB or better)

Time Standards by Percentile

AAAA

98%

This standard means your swimmer is ranked in the top 2% of swimmers their age-group, their same sex, in that stroke and distance.

AAA

94%

This standard means your swimmer is ranked in the top 6% of swimmers their age-group, their same sex, in that stroke and distance.

AA

92%

This standard means your swimmer is ranked in the top 8% of swimmers their age-group, their same sex, in that stroke and distance.

A

85%

This standard means your swimmer is ranked in the top 15% of swimmers their age-group, their same sex, in that stroke and distance.

BB

65%

This standard means your swimmer is ranked in the top 35% of swimmers their age-group, their same sex, in that stroke and distance.

B

45%

This standard means your swimmer is ranked in the top 55% of swimmers their age-group, their same sex, in that stroke and distance.

C

This standard is for all swimmers with times below the "B" standard. Everything from 0.00 up to the "B" standard is a "C" time.

 Notes

It is very normal for your swimmer to have different time standards for different strokes. They may even have different standards for the same stroke but different distances.

As your swimmer matures their best stroke and distances may change.

A swimmer should not specialize until they have completed physical maturation. Swimming all the strokes and all the distances will only improve your swimmers physical and mental development throughout their career.

Zone/Sectional Meets

Michigan is in the Central Zone of USA Swimming which consists of the following Local Swimming Committees (LSC): Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Lake Erie, Michigan, Midwestern, Minnesota, Missouri Valley, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Ozark, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Swimmers qualify for Zone Meets by achieving AAA cuts in individual events.  Specific time standards are set for Sectional meets, which are also called the Speedo Championship Series.  Information about Zone and Sectionals are available at www.centralzones.org.
