ABOUT THE SOUTH IRVINE DOLPHINS SUMMER SWIM TEAM

The Dolphins swim team has been a proud member of the Irvine Swim League (ISL) since 1995.  We rely on parent volunteers to manage and run all aspects of the organization.

As one of the ISL's "city teams," we can offer membership to swimmers living anywhere in Irvine or attending a school in Irvine. Membership is open to swimmers from ages 5 to 18 (as of June 1) and we can register up to 130 swimmers.

Swimmer eligibility

While there are no try-outs for members, the team is not a "learn to swim" organization, and all swimmers of all ages must be able to complete at least 25 yards (1 pool lap) unassisted, without floaties, to participate.

ISL Detach Rule

Swimmers 9 and older who join Dolphins for the summer and also swim on year-round clubs must detach from their club team by first day of the first club meet during the ISL season for their first year on the Dolphins in order to compete at the all-city Irvine Championship meet in early August. This rule only applies to: 1) New swimmers on the Dolphins who are, 2) in their first year on the Dolphins and 3) they are age 9 or older. The rule does not apply to returning Dolphins of any age, or to new Dolphins swimmers 8 and younger.

Season, meets, and races

Swimmers ages 5-8 compete in 25-yard races and swimmers ages 9-18  compete in 50-yard and 100-yard races.

Swimmer ages for competition are determined by their age on June 1, so all swimmers must be at least 5, and no older than 18, on June 1.

Our summer swim season is 10 weeks long and begins in late May and runs through early August.

The team participates in 5 regular swim meets and one Championship meet during the season, usually on Saturday mornings.  Additionally, we hold a "time trial" meet the Saturday before our first official swim meet to provide exposure to the meet environment and to establish a benchmark time for each event prior to the first official meet.

Practices

We are fortunate to practice for 90 minutes, 5 days a week, at the 10-lane aquatics facility on the campus of University High School (UHS), 4771 Campus Drive, Irvine 92612, and our home swim meets are usually held at UHS on Saturday mornings.

Parent volunteer participation

The team is run by a parent board and our swim meets are also run by parents. As a parent member of the Dolphins, contributing as a volunteer is critical to running the team and also helps build camaraderie. Each family is asked to volunteer at swim meets and on committees that organize and hold team functions.

We are a non profit club, run by an elected Board of Directors which meets each month. All members are welcome at each meeting and encouraged to be involved in team activities and fundraisers.

Coaches

Dolphins swimmers are coached by a team of college & high school-aged, American Red Cross-certified individuals.

All of our coaches, as members of the American Swimming Coaches Association, have access to the most comprehensive training and certification program for youth coaches of any sport in the United States. They provide assurances that the time children spend in swimming will be quality time.

Families who need to withdraw from the Dolphins may receive a refund of a portion of the Dolphins registration fee. The Irvine Swim League $50 registration fee is not refundable.
