Eat More Whole Foods

 
Whole foods grow from the earth and are filled with vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are essential to health and wellness.

Whole foods are preventative medicine and are also used for healing.

Whole foods closest to their raw form are most powerful, although there are benefits to eating them in any form!

Organic whole foods are the best: most nutrient dense and least toxic form of produce; however, if eating organic is a budgetary issue, know that eating conventional whole foods is better than eating no whole foods!

Local whole foods are also better for your body and community- support local farmers' markets or better yet- grow your own!

Why organic? 

Organic foods are whole foods the way they occur naturally, perfectly assimilated into the body. Organic foods are foods that our grandparents would just call food. They are untainted and grown with sound agricultural practices that are safe for the environment and our bodies.

What's the difference?

  Foods not grown organically are filled with toxic chemicals euphemistically known as pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers which are known carcinogens (which means they contribute to cancer) that are unsafe for children, nursing and pregnant women, and humans in general. Non-organic foods are also genetically modified organisms that are unsafe for human consumption, contain less nutrients, and are not easily assimilated into the body compared to natural "organic" versions.

Dangers

Pesticide, herbicide and fertilizer contact ( ranging from direct exposure to consumption) has resulted in documented maladies including cancers and birth defects. We encourage you to research the effects independently.

If non-organic foods are toxic, why are they legal?
The agriculture industry in the United States yields much power on Capitol Hill. The agriculture industry is no longer comprised of locally owned, small farms but rather a small handfull of large companies that have mass produced poisonous products for more profit. They are also directly owned by or invested in by pharmaceutical companies. It is therefore in their benefit to keep pharmaceuticals ( pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers) on the market and in our food. Pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers yield more crop ( although they are less nutrient, more toxic and less varied) for cheaper and are therefore in the best interest of these companies. The companies spend millions on lobbying and campaigning for politicians that support their practices so that they can continue to dominate the market and remain legal. Some government officials who are in charge of regulating agricultural industries actually make a profit from the industries themselves.

How to Eat More Whole Foods

Examine your family's meal plans and snacking practices and make an effort to include more whole foods. Eating to create a healthier body is about making simple choices.  Lifestyle changes happen gradually, with patience and persistence. Start by making small modifications that are comfortable and feasible and your body will naturally gravitate towards more healthy choices.

Choose fruit, vegetables and nuts as snacks

Fruits are delicious, healthful and ideal for the modern family. Prepack grapes, berries, sliced apples, oranges, pineapple and any other favorite fruits into single portions and keep them in the fridge for easy access as snacks and desserts. Vegetables like carrots, broccolli, cucumber, squash, couliflower and celery are ideal for snacking purposes. Slice them up and leave them in the fridge to pack for lunch, bring to practice, or munch on between meals. Nuts and seeds are also perfect snacking foods. Fill baggies with serving sizes of your favorite raw sunflower, pumpkin, peanut, almond, cashew or brasil nuts.

Make vegetables the main dish

Find interesting recipes, ethnic dishes, or modify family favorites to include more vegetables. ie: Add spinach to layers of pasta or bake sliced veggies in the oven with your favorite spices. Experiment with new vegetables and recipes!

Choose fruit for dessert

Choose fruits as your sweet after a nice meal. The options are limitless and they taste great raw. Bake cored apples in the oven with cane sugar and cinnamon. Grapes and blue berries are delicious frozen. For a faux ice cream, slice and freeze bananas, defrost for 10-15 minutes, and blend in the blender. Add nut butters, other fruits or your favorite topping. Add almond milk, hemp milk, soy milk, rice milk, coconut milk, flax milk or cow's milk and blend for a thick shake.
