Brigantine Beach 2nd Annual Open Water Swim - July 11, 2015

The Brigantine Green Heads, in conjunction with the Brigantine Beach Patrol (BCBP), and the City of Brigantine Beach will be hosting the following Open Water races-

  • Middle Atlantic sanctioned 10k for 13 and over USAS
  • Middle Atlantic sanctioned 2K for 10 and over USAS (Second Race of Jersey Shore Challenge)
  • 10k (unsanctioned) for USMS and 16 and over non-USAS
  • 2k (unsanctioned) for USMS 11 and over non-USAS
  • 800 M swim for 9-14 USAS swimmers

Date: Saturday July 11, 2015 (Postponement date: Sunday July 12)

The sanctioned USAS heat of each race will leave at the above times, and the non-sanctioned and USMS heats will follow ten minutes behind. 

Where: The Course


The race will begin at BCBP Headquarters on 17th and the Beach.  The swimmers will swim South approximately 3k, round the buoy, swim approximately 5k North, round the buoy, and swim 2k South finishing with a running beach finish at BCBP Lifeguard Headquarters.


The race will begin at either 39th street south (beach access on 38th street) swimming NORTH, or 7th street north swimming SOUTH. Swimmers will swim with the current and will end at BCBP Headquarters located at 17th and the Beach.


The swim will also be a beach start, swimming parallel to the beach.  Swimmers will be escorted to the 800M start from BCBP Lifeguard Headquarters.  Swimmers will be addressed at Race Safety meeting as to whether the race will swim north or south, depending on the tide.

Registration/Check-In: Please arrive for registration/check in, at the above mentioned times, depending on the race that you will be swimming.  Registration will be held on the deck at lifeguard headquarters.  Please bring proof of USA membership.

Eligibility: Swimmers that are registered with USA swimming can participate in the sanctioned wave one (1) of the race.  All other swimmers, including USMS swimmers, will participate in wave two (2).  All 800M swimmers must be a USAS.

Timing: Electronic timing will be provided by Prestige Athletics. Each swimmer will wear an electronic chip on their wrist to automatically record their time and monitor the swimmers.  Three backup watches will be run by meet officials.

Parking: On street parking is available.  Municipal lots may be used, but you must obtain a parking pass from race staff at the registration table.

Changing: No changing will be allowed on the beach, parking lots, or in cars.  There will be a limited number of portable toilets and a restroom behind BCBP HQ.

Feeding Boats: There will be 2 feeding boats available for 10k swimmers. Feeding boat locations are posted on the 10k course map.  Swimmer’s feeders must bring their own feeding pole.  Feeders should arrive NO LATER than 8 am for boat assignments and transport to dock.



T-Shirts will be given out to all pre-registered swimmers as well as the first 100 swimmers to show up on race day.


Medals will be awarded in the:

  • 10 k and the 2k to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd male and female place USAS finishers in the following  10-12 (2k Only), 13-14, and 15-18.
  • 10k and 2k for wave two for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male and female in the following age groups: 11-14, 15-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+.  
  • 800 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placed girl and boy in the following age groups: 9-10, 11-12, 13-14.


A trophy will be awarded to the first, second, and third overall highest times from both heats in the 10k and 2k.

Jersey Shore OW Challenge: This will be the second race in the three race series.  Swimmers from the Bridge to Bridge 2, our Brigantine Breach swim, and the Lavelette swim (all 2k races) will be competing in a challenge to compete all three 2ks.  Times will be tallied and a trophy will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd male and female with the lowest cumulative times in the three race challenge.

Rules and Safety: All races will follow 2015 USA Swimming Open Water Rules and Regulations. Middle Atlantic Swimming Officials, Brigantine EMS, and Brigantine City Beach Patrol (BCBP) will provide safety for this event. Safety officers in conjunction with the race director, reserve the right to cancel this event if conditions are unsafe.   All swimmers must attend the mandatory safety meeting at the above mentioned times in front of BCBP Headquarters.  For safety reasons nails must be clipped and no jewelry is allowed.  No wet suits permitted, unless authorized by the meet referee. Swimmers wearing wet suits will not be eligible for awards.

The race will not be swum in ocean temperatures less than 60.8 F.
