Brigantine Beach 3rd Annual Open Water Swim

The Brigantine Green Heads, in conjunction with the Brigantine Beach Patrol (BCBP), and the City of Brigantine Beach will be hosting the following Open Water races:

  • Middle Atlantic sanctioned 800 M swim for 9-14 USA swimmers

  • Middle Atlantic sanctioned 5k for 13 and over USA Swimmer

  • Middle Atlantic sanctioned 2K for 11 and over USA Swimmers (Second Race of Jersey Shore Challenge)

  • 5k (unsanctioned) for US Masters Swimming (USMS) and 16 and over non-USAS

  • 2k (unsanctioned) for US Masters Swimming (USMS) 11 and over non-USAS

Race Start:

The sanctioned USAS heat of each race will leave at the above times, and the non-sanctioned and USMS heats will follow ten minutes behind.


Where: The Course


The swim will also be a beach start, swimming parallel to the beach.  Swimmers will be escorted to the 800M start from BCBP Lifeguard Headquarters.  Swimmers will be addressed at Race Safety meeting as to whether the race will swim north or south, depending on the tide.


The race will begin at BCBP Headquarters on 17th and the Beach.  The swimmers will swim South approximately 1.25k, round the buoy, swim approximately 2.5k North, round the buoy, and swim 1.25k South finishing with a running beach finish at BCBP Lifeguard Headquarters.


The race will begin at either 39th street south (beach access on 38th street) swimming NORTH, or 7th street north swimming SOUTH. Swimmers will swim with the current and will end at BCBP Headquarters located at 17th and the Beach.

Registration/Check-In: Please arrive for registration/check in, at the above mentioned times, depending on the race that you will be swimming.  Registration will be held on the deck at lifeguard headquarters.  Please bring proof of USA membership.


Eligibility: Swimmers that are registered with USA swimming can participate in the sanctioned wave one (1) of the race.  All other swimmers, including USMS swimmers, will participate in wave two (2).  All 800M swimmers must be a USAS.


Timing: Two time recording stop watches and three back up stop watches will be run by USA Swimming Open Water Meet Officials. The finish will be video taped and still photography will be taken of each swimmer as they cross the finish line.


Parking: On street parking is available.  Municipal lots may be used, but you must obtain a parking pass from race staff at the registration table.


Changing: No changing will be allowed on the beach, parking lots, or in cars.  There will be a limited number of portable toilets and a restroom behind BCBP HQ.




T-Shirts will be given out to all pre-registered swimmers as well as the first 50 swimmers to show up on race day.


Medals will be awarded in the:           

  • 5 k and the 2k to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd male and female place USAS finishers in the following  11-12 (2k Only), 13-14, and 15-18.

  • 5k and 2k for wave two for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male and female in the following age groups: 13-14, 15-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+.  

  • 800M for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placed girl and boy in the following age groups: 9-10, 11-12, 13-14.


A trophy will be awarded to the first, second, and third overall highest times from both heats in the 5k and 2k.


Rules and Safety: All races will follow 2016 USA Swimming Open Water Rules and Regulations. Middle Atlantic Swimming Officials, Brigantine EMS, and Brigantine City Beach Patrol (BCBP) will provide safety for this event. Safety officers in conjunction with the race director, reserve the right to cancel this event if conditions are unsafe.   All swimmers must attend the mandatory safety meeting at the above mentioned times in front of BCBP Headquarters.  For safety reasons nails must be clipped and no jewelry is allowed.  No wet suits permitted, unless authorized by the meet referee. Swimmers wearing wetsuits will not be eligible for awards.

The race will not be swum in ocean temperatures less than 60.8 F.

Team Entry Deadline is 5 p.m. on August 5, 2016.  All Team entries must come in TU format. No team entries will be accepted by TU format after August 5, 2016.


All pre-registration athletes: All pre-registration and payment must be received by August 5, 2016. Make checks payable to BGH.
