Water Babies  |  Level 1  |  Level 2  |  Level 3  |  Level 4  |  Level 5 |    

 

Water Babies     8:1 Ratio

No floatation devices such as a belt or vest will be used or permitted. 
Your swimmer(s) will not need an evaluation to sign up for this class.
Swim Diapers are required.

This class is a fun introduction to the water and will enhance the bond between parent and child while simultaneously teaching safety in a social setting.  Our Water Babies program is designed for swimmers ranging from 6 months to 3 years of age.  Parents will be in the water with their swimmers. In this class both parent and child will learn about basic water safety, enjoy interactive activities learned through song and play, have exposure to light submersion, and gain comfortability along with confidence in and around the water. 

Skills:

  • Assisted sitting jumps
  • Proper way to enter and exit the pool
  • Assisted back floats
  • Light submersion 
  • Socialization for parents and swimmers

  • For our toddlers to be prepared for Level 1! 

It is common for a swimmer to participate in a level for more than one session! Each swimmer is different and will achieve his or her goals at their own pace. 
 



Level 1     3:1 Ratio     30 Min

No floatation devices such as a belt or vest will be used or permitted. 
Your swimmer(s) must be potty trained in order to take this class.
Your swimmer(s) will not need an evaluation to sign up for this class.

Our level one class is designed for beginner swimmers, or for swimmers right out of our Parent and me class.

In level one our focus will be basic water safety, breath control, and body position all in a social setting. Your swimmers will gain control over and enhance their motor skills.  They will also become more independent as they become more confident in their new found abilities, and ultimately develop a lifelong love of the water!

  • Basic water safety
  • Proper entry and exit
  • Pool rules
  • Kicks with the barbell
  • Submersion
  • Breath control
  • Short glides
  • Back floats   
  • Paddles and kicks

Goals:

  • Comfortable with submersions
  • Can enter and exit the water safely
  • Ability to paddle and kick with minimal or no assistance
  • Float on their back independently
  • Knowledgeable of pool rules
  • Understand the idea of participating in a group setting

Level 2     3:1 Ratio     30 Min

Your swimmer(s) will need an evaluation to sign up for this class.

Prerequisites for Level 2:

  • Comfortable with submersions
  • Ability to paddle and kick with minimal or no assistance
  • Float on their back independently
  • Can jump into the water feet first 
  • Can patiently wait their turn
  • Have an understanding of the idea of participating in a group setting

In Level 2 swimmers have achieved comfortability in the water, and we will be focusing on the introduction of the basic fundamentals of Backstroke, Freestyle, rotary breathing, dives, treading water, and retrieving objects from the bottom of the pool with minimal or no assistance. Level 2 is a big step in instilling confidence and building strength in our swimmers. 

Skills:

  • Continued safety skills 
  • Introduction to proper technique for Freestyle and Backstroke
  • Treading water
  • Refine breath control
  • Start to build endurance 

Goals:

  •  Ability to independently execute Backstroke as a whole
  •  Exposure to the basic fundamentals of Freestyle and rotary breathing
  •  Ability tread water
  •  Able to retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool unassisted     
  •  Ability to do a kneeling dive

It is common for a swimmer to participate in a level for more than one session! Each swimmer is different and will achieve his or her goals at their own pace.
 



Level 3     3:1 Ratio     30 Min

Your swimmer(s) will need an evaluation to sign up for this class.

Prerequisites for Level 3:

  • Completely comfortable in the water
  • Ability to independently execute backstroke as a whole
  • Previous exposure to the basic fundamentals of Freestyle and rotary breathing ( no "pop up” breathing )
  • Ability tread water
  • Able to retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool unassisted     

In Level 3 we will build on the skills our swimmers have mastered in Level 2. Our main focus will be refining Freestyle with rotary breathing,  refining Backstroke, endurance, treading water, standing dives, along with an introduction to the basic fundamentals of Breaststroke.  

Skills:

  • Review proper Backstroke 
  • Refine proper Freestyle with rotary breathing
  • Treading water
  • Build strength
  • Introduction to Breaststroke
  • Introduction to standing dives

Goals:

  • Proper Freestyle with rotary breathing
  • Proper Backstroke
  • Exposure to basic fundamentals of Breaststroke
  • Can swim Freestyle and Backstroke for 25 yards with out  equipment 
  • Become stronger more confident swimmers

Level 4     4:1 Ratio     30 Min

Your swimmer(s) will need an evaluation to sign up for this class.

Prerequisites for Level 4:

  • Can swim Freestyle with rotary breathing for 25 yards without equipment 
  • Can swim Backstroke for 25 yards without equipment 
  • Previous exposure to basic fundamentals of Breaststroke

Level 4  is ur most advanced learn to swim class.  In this level our focus will be technique  and endurance.  We will review Freestyle and Backstroke, as well as refine Breaststroke. It will be at this point the basic fundamentals of Butterfly will be introduced.  Swimmers will get a feel for how to circle swim and learn lap swimming pool etiquette as they prepare for more of a team like environment.

  • Ready position
  • Circle swimming
  • Streamline
  • Review Freestyle and Backstroke
  • Refine Breaststroke
  • Introduction to Butterfly
  • Build endurance

Goals:

  • Ability to swim 25 yards of each stroke 
  • Ability to tread water for up to 1 minute 
  • Completely comfortable in the deep end
  • Ready for Level 5, our last stop before Swim Team!

Level 5     5:1 Ratio     45 Min
 
Your instructor will be teaching a majority of this class from the pool deck.

Your swimmer(s) will need an evaluation to sign up for this class.

Prerequisites for Level 5: 

  • Ability to swim 25 yards of all four strokes 
  • Ability to tread water for up to 1 minute 
  • Completely comfortable in the deep end

In Level 5 your swimmer will become proficient in all four strokes.  In a team like environment we will introduce the pace clock, flip turns, open turns, relays, 100 yard Individual Medley, along with swimming terminology.  This is the final step before becoming eligible to join SJAC’s Swim Team!

Skills: 

  • Endurance training 
  • Starts, turns, and finishes
  • Interval training 
  • Introduction to Individual Medley, aka 100 IM
  • Medley Relay, Freestyle Relay, Relay starts
  • Review skills previously learned

Goals:

  • Become proficient and legal in all four strokes 
  • Ability to do flip turns and open turns 
  • Understand intervals and how to use the Pace Clock
  • Understanding of swimming terminology 
  • Understand and properly execute starts 
  • Ability to continuously swim 100 yards 
  • Learn the importance of good sportsmanship 
  • Ultimately become Swim Team ready!
