Lancaster Family YMCA Lightning

2019-2020 Short Course

The Lancaster Family YMCA offers swimmers the opportunity to participate seasonally or year-round.  This year we are excited to offer a 10-month Lightning Swim Academy for the Junior Competitive, Competitive, and High School/National groups. 

PROGRAMS

Short Course Only:  This program is for swimmers who plan to swim from September 9th-February.  Swimmers who qualify for Districts or States may continue through those meets.   Team dues will be paid in five monthly installments beginning Sept. 10th.  Short course is offered at the City and at L-S.

Spring Clinic:  Clinics are held for eight weeks from April 13th thru June 6th.  Registration will open in February.  Spring Clinic is only offered at the City.

Long Course:  Long course is from April 13th thru July 30th.  Swimmers will train at the City Y in the spring and at the county pool for six weeks in June and July.  Registration will open in February. 

Lightning Swim Academy:  The academy is a year-round option for swimmers who plan to train short-course and long-course.  The Academy offers a 5% discount and the opportunity to spread payments over 10 months.  Academy practices in the spring are only offered at the City.

TRAINING GROUPS

Foundational (CITY or L-S)

Foundational swimmers are age 10 & under and have minimal competitive experience.  The goal of this group is to build a strong foundation of swimming skills and a love of the sport.  The focus is on stroke development and fun!

Evaluation Criteria:  Swimmers must be able to complete 100 yards of freestyle with good breathing and 25 yards of backstroke.  Swimmers must demonstrate a working knowledge of breaststroke and butterfly. 

Junior Competitive (CITY or L-S)

Junior Competitive swimmers are between the ages of 9 and 12 and have some competitive experience.  The goal of this group is to further the development of all four strokes as well as starts & turns.  The focus of this group is on stroke mechanics and conditioning.

Evaluation Criteria:  Swimmers must be able to complete 200 yards of freestyle and 25 yards of backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.  Swimmers must also be able to dive and have a working knowledge of freestyle flip turns.

Competitive (CITY or L-S)

Competitive swimmers are between the ages of 11 and 14 and they have significant competitive experience.  The goal of this group is to become a strong competitor in all four strokes.  This group will have more challenging workouts with a focus on preparation for advanced competition. 

Evaluation Criteria:  Swimmers must be able to complete 300 yards of freestyle and 50 yards of backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.  They must also be able to swim 5 x 100’s freestyle on an interval of 1:45 or faster.

High School/National Team

The High School/National Team is for high school age swimmers.  The goal of this group is to prepare swimmers for success in their high school program and the YMCA and USA Swimming circuits.  This group will focus on refining stroke mechanics and increasing training intensity.  They will also have supervised strength training 2-3 days per week.  National level swimmers will be expected to swim year-round and maintain 80% attendance or higher.

Evaluation Criteria:  Swimmers must be able to complete 500 yards of freestyle and 50 yards of backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.  They must also be able to swim 8 x 100’s freestyle on an interval of 1:30 or faster.

FEES

These fees are program fees and do not include a Y membership.  All swimmers must be Y members by September 1st.  

Information about Y memberships can be found here:  https://lancasterymca.org/join/.  An additional $100 is due at the time of registration.  Swimmers choosing to participate in USA meets will be billed $70 for their USA registration. 

Families with two or more swimmers will have 10% deducted for each additional swimmer.  The deduction applies to the swimmer training at the lowest level.  

Families are responsible for the entire balance of the season that they committed to regardless of swimmer attendance.   Swimmers who withdrawal from the program for medical reasons must submit a doctor’s excuse.
