Athletes may be registered at any time, but MUST be registered at least 2 weeks prior a to any meet they wish to swim in. Any swimmers not registered 10 days prior to a sanctioned or approved meet will NOT be entered into the meet. They may, however, still swim in the meet if the Meet Director accepts deck entries, and the swimmer is registered prior to the start of the meet. The fee for express processing is twice the normal registration fee.

A REGISTERED USA SWIMMING (USAS) ATHLETE/SWIMMER TRAINING AND COMPETING WITH/FOR LOWER MORELAND SWIMMING (LMOR) MUST BE REGISTERED WITH LMOR IN USA SWIMMING. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL BE CAUSE FOR THE NON-LMOR USAS ATHLETE/SWIMMER TO BE AUTOMATICALLY REMOVED FROM LMOR.
WITH THE PRIOR CONSENT FROM THE HEAD COACH OF LOWER MORELAND SWIMMING (LMOR) AND WITH THE DIRECT ASSISTANCE OF LMOR’S USA SWIMMING REPRESENTATIVE, LMOR ATHLETES (WHO ARE REGISTERED USA SWIMMING) MAY COMPETE IN A USA SWIMMING MEET NOT LISTED LMOR’S SCHEDULE. SWIMMER ANALYSIS AND PLACEMENT
The coaching staff strongly believes, to ensure proper development, prevent injury, and to promote optimal performance, that select swimmers need to be moved into the correct group. Groups are currently based on qualifying times, repeat practice times, commitment, age, level of development and ability. Swimmer analysis and placement is continually ongoing and may be adjusted throughout the year.
SWIMMERS SHOULD PLAN ON ATTENDING THE FASTEST MEET THEY QUALIFY FOR (EVEN IF IT'S ONLY FOR A RELAY), PLUS ANY ADDITIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MEETS THAT THE HEAD COACH SEES FIT. THE OPPORTUNITY TO SWIM AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPETITION(MEET) THAT A SWIMMER QUALIFIES FOR IS EXTREMELY BENEFICIAL FOR HIS OR HER GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.
THERE IS A CHAMPIONSHIP MEET FOR EVERYONE ON THE TEAM. THIS IS THE FOCUS OF TRAINING FOR BOTH SEASONS (SCY & LCM). EVERYONE SHOULD FULLY PARTICIPATE IN AT LEAST ONE OF THESE QUALIFYING MEETS!
The information for each meet will be posted on our website. Never contact any meet director; all questions or requests must go to your training group coach and then to the head coach.
The head coach will decide if and when a swimmer should tech, taper, and shave down. This is usually done one to two times per season.
As a general reminder, if a swimmer misses an extended amount of practice time with our team leading into a meet they may not be ready to compete at the proper level and may be removed from the upcoming meet. This will be left to the discretion of the head coach.
Parents being allowed on deck or locker rooms during practice time is a liability and safety issue. The policy is in place to prevent distractions for the coach(es) as well as the athletes. The only individuals that should be on deck during a practice are assigned Lower Moreland Natatorium (LMN) current certified lifeguards and pool operators, USA Swimming current certified coach members, current USA Swimming athletes, current USA Swimming officials; current PIAA coaches, athletes, and officials; and recognized volunteers acting as an CTS/Hy-Tek Operator, SAL officials and starter, and timers. General USA Swimming Meet Notes:
What to bring to a meet:
Extra goggles, suit, and cap
Drinks- water or energy drinks (if coolers are allowed on pool decks)
Snacks – energy foods, fruits, veggies, sandwiches, etc.
Team swim cap
Parka or warm clothes in cold weather
Footwear (sheepskin lined boots, sandals, flip flops)
Some swimmers like to bring folding chairs, sleeping bags, or blankets
Outdoor meets- EZ Up (Often times we have parent volunteers that are willing to set up team EZ UP’s), sunscreen
Games, books, cards, etc.
At most meets, the hosting team will run a snack bar with reasonable prices. Hosting teams typically invite swim gear vendors. This is a great time to purchase goggles, work out suits and caps, and any other gear your swimmer may need. Vendors at meets often offer discounted prices on suits and swim gear.
What to expect at a meet:
Arrive on time for warm-up: Meet warm up and start times will be stated prior. Coaches will also instruct swimmers as to the time they should arrive at the meet for warm up.
Note: Most LMOR families sit together at the swim meets. This is a great way to get to know the LMOR families and swimmers. It also builds great camaraderie. Swimmers enjoy cheering for each other.
Check in: Typically signs are posted directing swimmers where to check in. At the check in table, the swimmer confirms the events they are entered to swim. Often swimmers will write their event numbers on their hand with a sharpie marker to help keep track of their events for the day.
Report to the LMOR coach: Our coaches are often rotated at meets. If your coach is not present, report to the LMOR coach attending the meet.
Warm-up with your LMOR teammates: Coaches will get the swimmers warmed up before the start of the meet.
It is the swimmer’s responsibility to be behind the blocks in time for their race. If a swimmer accidentally misses an event, the swimmer needs to report to the meet official/starter or admin table. According to the USA Swimming Rules Book, the swimmer may be penalized and not allowed to swim their next event.
After the Race: The swimmer reports back to the coach. The coach will analyze the race and then sends the swimmer to cool down. It is important to do the proper cool down after each event.
Parent Lane Timers: For parents attending meets, each participating team is encouraged to provide lane timers.
For safety and liability purposes in USA Swimming, our swimmers are required to be off of the pool deck 15 minutes upon completion of their last race. Parents need to be in contact with their child immediately following the completion of their last race.
Additional swimmer reminders for a USA Swimming meet:
1. Lots of stretching, liquids, healthy food, & rest (away from practice)
2. Set realistic goals for each event

4. Have racing suits (1, + backup, no tech or jammer), goggles (1, + backup), and team cap (1, + backup, no dome)

From USA Swimming...
Swim meets are a great family experience. They're a place where the whole family can spend time together.
Listed below are some very in-depth guidelines geared to help you through your first couple of swim meets. It may seem a little overwhelming, but we tried to be as specific and as detailed as we possibly could. If you have any questions, please ask your coach.
BEFORE THE MEET STARTS
- Arrive at the pool at least 15 minutes before the scheduled warm-up time begins. This time will be listed in the meet information handed out to all swimmers and also in the team newsletter.
- Upon arrival, find a place to put your swimmer's blankets, swim bags and/or sleeping bags. The team usually sits in one place together, so look for some familiar faces.
- Find the check-in place. Usually, parents are not allowed on deck so this may be a responsibility of your swimmer or your swimmer’s coach. Make sure your swimmer checks in with his or her coach! Check for special posted instructions in the check-in area.
- Usually one will need to circle the swimmer's name or "#" before each swimmer's name, in each event he or she is swimming, that day. If this is not done, the swimmer will not be allowed to swim that event. Check-in is required so that the people running the meet know who is actually at the meet. After check-in, the meet administrators "seed" the swimmers into heats. Heat and lane assignments will be posted, so be sure your swimmer knows where to look!
- Sometimes the meet is "pre-seeded" and no check-in is required. You and your swimmer can find heat and lane assignments by purchasing a program.
- Once "checked in", write or have the swimmers write each event-number on his or her hand in ink. This helps him/her remember what events he/she is swimming and what event number to listen or watch for.
- Your swimmer now gets his/her cap and goggles and reports to the pool and/or coach for warm-up instructions. It is very important for all swimmers to warm-up with the team. A swimmer's body is just like a car on a cold day-he/she needs to get the engine going and warmed-up before he/she can go all out.
- After warm-up, your swimmer will go back to the area where his/her team is sitting and wait there until his first event is called. This is a good time to make sure he/she goes to the bathroom if necessary, gets a drink, or just gets settled in.
- The meet will usually start about 10-15 minutes after warm-ups are over.
- According to USA Swimming rules (because of insurance purposes), parents are not allowed on deck unless they are serving in an official capacity. Similarly, all questions concerning meet results, an officiating call, or the conduct of a meet, should be referred to a coach. He or she in turn, will pursue the matter through the proper channels.
- Psyche Sheet or Heat Sheets. A psyche sheet is usually available for sale in the lobby or concession area of the pool. It lists all swimmers in each event in order of "seed time". When the team entry is sent in, each swimmer and his/her previous best time (up to the date that the entry was submitted) in that event is listed. If the swimmer is swimming an event for the first time, he/she will be entered as a "no-time" or "NT". A "no-time" swimmer will most likely swim in one of the first heats of the event. A Heat sheet may be available close to the start of the meet that lists the actual heat and lane a swimmer will be competing in.
- It is important for any swimmer to know what event numbers he/she is swimming (again, why they should have the numbers on their hand). He/she may swim right away after warm-up or they may have to wait awhile.
- Most meets are computerized. There are generally two ways a swimmer gets to his/her lane:
- A swimmer usually reports directly to his/her lane for competition a number of heats before he/she actually swims. Check with your swimmer's coach for specific instructions.
- In some novice meets, a swimmer's event number will be called, usually over the loudspeaker, and he/she will be asked to report to the "clerk of course" or “bullpen”. Swimmers should report with his/her cap and goggle.
- Generally, girls events are odd-numbered and boys events are even-numbered. Example: "Event #26, 10-Under Boys, 50 freestyle, report to Clerk of Course." The "Clerk of Course" or “bullpen” area is usually where all swimmers checked in before the warm-up.
- The clerk will usually line up all the swimmers and take them down to the pool in correct order. You can expect at least 4-8 heats of each event.
- The swimmer swims his or her race.
- After each swim:
- He/she is to ask the timers (people behind the blocks at each lane) his/her time.
- Depending on the coaches instructions, the swimmer may be asked to do some recovery swimming if a "warm down" pool or lanes are available.
- The swimmer should then go immediately to his or her coach. The coach will discuss the swim with each swimmer. Some coaches may wish to talk with the swimmer before her recovery swim.
- Generally, the coach follows these guidelines when discussing swims:
- Positive comments or praise
- Suggestions for improvement
- Positive comments
- Things you, as a parent, can do after each swim- tell him how great he did! The coaching staff will be sure to discuss stroke technique with him. You need to tell him how proud you are and what a great job he did.
- The swimmer now waits until his next event is called and starts the procedure again. When a swimmer has completed all of her events she and her parents get to go home. Make sure, however, you, as a parent, check with the coach before leaving to make sure your swimmer is not included on a relay. It is not fair to other swimmers who may have stayed to swim on a relay where your swimmer is expected to be a member and she is not there.
- Results are usually posted somewhere in the facility. Awards are often gathered for a team and given to the coach at the end of the meet. The coach will give the awards to the swimmers at a later time.
How many meets should a swimmer compete in? This is a very hard question to answer because much depends on the level and age of the athlete as well as the nature of the swim meet. Is the meet a trials and finals meet lasting three days with the swimmer competing in multiple events each day? Or is the meet a dual meet that is over in two hours with the swimmer competing in only two or three events? Different physical and mental stress levels are involved depending on the type of meet.
As a general rule of thumb, swimmers might compete in meets one or two times per month with one or two months during the year completely free of meets. Competing one or two times per month may not be realistic if swimmers are on high school or YMCA teams that swim dual meet schedules. In these cases it is important that the coach allow plenty of recovery time following the intense competitive season, allowing considerable time with no competition at all.
Being in charge of the wet side means that it is the coach who sets the meet schedule for the team and for each swimmer. Additionally, it is the coach’s job to select the events for each swimmer. This may be done in consultation with the swimmer, or, in the case of very young swimmers, in consultation with the parent, but ultimately the choice of events is up to the coach. In most cases the coach is also responsible for submission of the team entries.
The next question that arises concerns how many events a swimmer should enter in each meet. Generally, the more a swimmer races, the more relaxed the swimmer becomes in race situations. Most young swimmers enter the maximum number of races allowed by the meet rules. The event selection is more important than how many events a swimmer enters. Allowing young swimmer to experience personal success by competing exclusively in events in which they already excel will hinder their need to develop skills that will be beneficial in the future. Parents often want their swimmers to enter only their “best events.” The coach’s job is to broaden the horizons of both the swimmers and the parents. As swimmers become ready for new challenges, choose the 500 free instead of the 100 free or the 200 backstroke instead of the 50 backstroke. Swimmers gain confidence and can often see great and rewarding improvement in new, more challenging events.
END OF MEET REMINDERS:
1. Swimmers must check with their coach prior to leaving a meet. Should it become necessary for a Swimmer to leave a meet early, his/her Coach must be notified.
2. Swimmers are expected to meet with their Coach before and after each event. In prelim & final meets, all Swimmers who qualify to compete in the finals are expected to participate in the finals. All team members are strongly encouraged to return to the finals sessions to support the team and take advantage of the opportunity to learn from watching the finals. At times, alternate and relay positions open up that need to be filled.
3. Swimmers are expected to follow the team uniform policy. Specific meet uniform requirements will be found in the meet promo posted on the team website or disseminated by the Coach prior to the meet. Be proud to wear your red, white, and blue. Your personal appearance shall be neat and appropriate at all times.
4. Swimmers are expected to sit with the team and participate in all team meet activities and team meetings.
5. As a matter of team pride and courtesy to the meet host, Swimmers are expected to leave the LMOR team area in a neat and clean condition at the conclusion at each session of the meet.
6. All questions swimmers or parents may have concerning meet results, an officiating call, or the conduct of a meet, should be referred to the LMOR Coaching Staff only. Our Coaches, in turn, will pursue the matter through appropriate channels.
7. In accordance with USA Swimming policy, parents are expected to remain in the spectator area and off the immediate competitive deck unless they are working the meet in an official capacity.
8. No “deck changes” are permitted. Swimmers are expected to use available changing facilities.
TECH SUITS ("knee skins") are ONLY for 13 & Over swimmers, should only be worn per the coach's decision, and ONLY to be worn 1 to 2 times per season at sanctioned championship meets.
Shaving down is ONLY for 14 & Over (High School aged) swimmers, should only be done per the coach's decision, and ONLY to be done 1 to 2 times per season at sanctioned championship meets
