Practice Groups

The Hill Y in Westminster Piranhas offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the Hill Y in Westminster Piranhas to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of their abilities.

For 2020-2021: We currently do not have any meets scheduled; Maryland Swimming is holding no swim meets prior to January 1, and the C&P Y Swim League currently has no meets scheduled due to COVID-19. The descriptions below include the usual championship meets in case those are able to be held towards the end of the season. We are considering virtual meets as an option, and will keep the team updated as we explore those opportunities this season.

 

The practice times are significantly different from past seasons. We are limited to four swimmers per lane to promote physical distancing amongst the swimmers, and so we had to update the schedule to maintain those distancing guidelines. Please check the practice times carefully.

 

All practice groups this year will run through March, unless for health and safety reasons practices need to be suspended.

Senior Practice Group 

This group is for swimmers ages 13 and up who demonstrate advanced swimming ability. These swimmers have the highest level of skill, ability and commitment to swimming.  Swimmers in this group are typically Winterfest, District, and/or State qualifying swimmers. Practice and dual meet attendance is mandatory. Invitational meets and USA Swimming meets are strongly recommended. Senior team members will have 5 practices per week. Training is from certified coaches and trainers.  Participation is by invitation only.

  • Mondays 3:30-5:30pm
  • Tuesday/Thursday 7:00-9:00pm
  • Friday 4:00-6:00pm

Junior Practice Group

This group is for swimmers ages 12 and up who demonstrate advanced swimming ability.   These swimmers have the highest level of skill, ability and commitment to swimming. Swimmers in this group typically qualify for Winterfest and/or Districts. Some swimmers at this level also qualify for States. Practice and dual meet attendance is mandatory. Invitational meets and USA Swimming meets are strongly recommended.  Junior team members will have 4 practices per week. Training is from certified coaches and trainers. Participation is by invitation only.

  • Monday/Tuesday/Thursday 5:30-7:00pm

Cadet Practice Group

This group is open to swimmers ages 9 and up. Practice groups will be determined by age and ability. Y dual meet attendance is expected. This training group accommodates the busy schedules of active children who wish to participate in winter swimming. This group also serves as a transitional group for those swimmers  hoping to join the Junior and Senior groups. Cadet groups will have 3 practices per week.

Novice Practice Group

This group is for swimmers ages 7 to 10. The practice sessions consist of stroke work and endurance training. These swimmers are relatively new to winter swimming. Y dual meet attendance is expected. Emphasis is on fun, fitness and good swimming technique. Novice swimmers must be able to swim freestyle and backstroke for a minimum of 25 yards continuously. Novice members will have 3 practices per week.

  • Wednesday: 6:00-7:00pm
  • Saturday: 8:00-9:00am

Mini Practice Group

This group is designed for swimmers 8 and under that are new to competitive swimming.  Swimmers must be able to swim the length of the pool with their face in the water.  Swimmers must also be comfortable on their back in the water. Mini swimmers will practice 2 times per week. Y dual meet attendance is encouraged.
