Seals Pups 1 and Seals pups 2

Seal Pups 1 and 2- Introduction into swimming (Sessions are offered bi-monthly starting September)

SEAL PUPS 1-(New swimmers from lessons)

The Seals Pups 1 group is the first level the Westbrook Seals Swim Team offers.  Ages will vary however this group will mainly be between the ages of 5-8 years old.  This program will consist of swimmers who have finished the highest levels of lessons offered by their communitySwimmers must be comfortable in the water with the ability to swim 25 yards of the pool Freestyle, with over the water recovery and rotary breathing.  Swimmers must also be able to swim 25 yards of the pool Backstroke, with over the water recovery, without stopping or requiring any aids to complete the task.  Swimmers in the Seal Pup 1 group should be able to do a standing front dive from the deck as well and should have good listening skills and the ability to tolerate 30 minutes of instructive swimming as well as 15 minutes of dryland exercises focusing on body awareness and balance once a week.  Development of the freestyle and backstroke are the main focus while introducing the breaststroke and butterfly strokes.  This group will meet 2 times a week.  The coaches will set up a MINI meet at the end of the session for the swimmers to demonstrate their knowledge of the strokes.  The goal of the PRE-TEAM 1 group is to build confidence and stamina to swim up to 100 yards of both the Freestyle and Backstroke without stopping.  Swim competitions are offered but not required for this group.

 

Seals Pups 2-(swimmers who have completed at least 1 session with the Seals Pups 1 program)

This is the 2nd level of the Westbrook Seals Program.  Ages will vary however this group will mainly be between the ages of 7-11 years old.  The Seal Pup 2 group will continue to work on the mastery of the freestyle and backstroke.  Swimmers in this group must be able to swim 25 yards of the pool with proper body position and balance Freestyle and Backstroke, with over the water recovery without stopping or requiring any aids to complete the tasks.  Swimmers in the Seals Pups 2 should be able to do a standing front dive from the deck as well as having good listening skills and the ability to tolerate 30 minutes of instructive swimming as well as 15 minutes of dryland exercises focusing on body awareness and balance once a week. The program will focus on teaching legal performances of all 4 strokes including Breaststroke, Butterfly, starts and turns.  This group will meet 2 times a week.   The coaches will set up a MINI meet at the end of the session for the swimmers to demonstrate their knowledge of the strokes.  The goal of this group is to master rotary breathing and proper body position in Freestyle and Backstroke with a steady kick and proper body position.  The goals of this group are to master rotary breathing and proper body position in Freestyle and Backstroke with a steady kick and proper body position.  Swimmers exiting this group will be familiar with all 4 swimming strokes, turns, starts, and will prepared to be competitive swimmers in our Novice 1 group.  Swimmers of this group will have confidence and stamina to swim up to 200 yards of both Freestyle and Backstroke without stopping.  Swim competitions are offered but not required for this group.

Recommendation by a Seal Pups group coach is required for any group changes.

White Group 1 and White Group 2

White 1 and 2 – Beginner Competitive program (Sessions are offered September to December, January to end of March, April to June, June to July OR for the entire winter/summer seasons)

WHITE 1 – (New swimmers from the Seals Pups 2 program)

The White 1 is the first COMPETITIVE swim program the Westbrook Seals Swim Team has to offer.  Ages will vary however this group will be mainly between the ages of 7-12 years old.  Swimmers must have good balance in the water and be able to hold proper streamline body position while swimming.  They must be able to complete 100 yards of Freestyle with rotary breathing and 50 yards of Backstroke with a steady flutter kick.  The Butterfly stroke must be performed with legal kicking and arm recovery (with or without fins) as well as 25 yards of rudimentary Breaststroke at the surface of the water.  Swimmers must be able to do racing starts from the side of the pool, open turns, and know how to do a summersault.  Good listening skills and the ability to follow directions and to tolerate 60 minutes of instruction required.  The focus of this group is to prepare swimmers for swimming competition around the state (possibly regionally as well).  Swimmers in this group will have the knowledge and stroke confidence to compete in events set up for them by USA and Maine Swimming. This group will meet 3 times a week for 1 hour practices, 10 minutes of dryland 1-2 times a week, as well as Mentoring sessions on Saturdays.  The goal of this program is to continue to educate the swimmers about the strokes and events that they could swim given their age.  While focusing on the technical side of swimming this group PRIMARY focus is FUN.  We want swimmers in this group to enjoy the sport of swimming as well as competition.  Swimmers are expected to attend meets chosen by the coaches.  ALL WESTBROOK SEALS HOSTED MEETS ARE MANDATORY. 

WHITE 2- (swimmers who have completed at least 1 session with the White 1 program)

The White 2 group is the 2nd COMPETITIVE swim program the Westbrook Seals swim team has to offer.  Ages will vary however this group will be mainly between 7-12 years old. Swimmers must be able to complete a legal 100 IM, 200 Freestyle (with rotary breathing), 100 yards of Backstroke (with a steady flutter kick), and 25 yards of legal Butterfly and Breaststroke.  Swimmers must be able to perform racing starts from the blocks as well as be legal in ALL turns.  Use of the pace clock is necessary at this level and swimmers should know how to use the clock to leave on intervals as well as having basic knowledge of swimming terminology.  Good listening skills and the ability to follow directions and to tolerate 60 minutes of instruction required.  The focus of this group is to prepare swimmers for swimming competition around the state (possibly regionally as well).  Swimmers in this group will have the knowledge and stroke confidence to compete in events set up for them by USA and Maine Swimming. Criteria for moving from White 2 to AGE GROUP:

  • Consistently perform all 4 strokes legally both in practice and competition
  • Be able to dive from the block (head first not whole body)
  • Be ready socially, emotionally, and physically for a higher demand
  • Basic knowledge of drills for ALL 4 Strokes (at least 2 drills for each stroke)
  • Should have attended at least 3 meets not hosted by the Seals Swim Team
  • Basic knowledge of pace clock

AGE Group 1 and AGE Group 2

AGE GROUP PROGRAMS – Competition ready swimmers (Sessions are offered September to December, January to end of March, April to June, June to July OR for the entire winter/summer seasons)

AGE 1-

The Age 1 program is our 3nd competitive group. Ages will vary however; swimmers in this group must be at least 8 years old.  The focus of this group is to prepare swimmers for a monthly meet schedule.  Meets will be determined by the coaching staff that will be challenging and fun at the same time.  Travel outside of the LSC is not required but suggested.  The AGE 1 group will meet 4 times week for 1 hour and 15 minutes, 20 minutes of dryland 2 times per week, as well as mentoring sessions on Saturdays.  The goal of this group is to introduce swimmers to competition schedules and to increase their swimming and competition knowledge.  ALL WESTBROOK SEALS HOSTED MEETS ARE MANDATORY. 

Recommendation of AGE 1 and AGE 2 coaches is required for any group changes.

 

Ability Criteria for moving from AGE 1 to AGE 2 Group:

  • Minimum attendance of 4 practices a week
  • Ability to swim for 1.5 hours
  • Ability to perform 30 minutes or more of dry lands or stretching
  • Focused on using correct technique
  • Engaged competitive swimmers
  • Attend at least 1 scheduled meet per month
  • FOUR MSI state championship cut times or 2 AA USA Swimming time standards
  • Must have legal times in all 200 events and 400 IM and the MILE
  • Be ready socially, emotionally, and physically for a higher demand
  • Must have their own equipment bags for training

 

AGE 2-

The Age 2 group is our highest level AGE GROUP PROGRAM. Ages will vary however; swimmers in this group must be at least 11 years old.  This group will focus on stroke and race strategy.  Swimmers in this group will practice 5 times per week for 1 hour and 30 minutes, 30 minutes of dryland 2 times per week, as well as Mentoring sessions on Saturdays.  The focus of the AGE 2 program is to showcase the skills and race strategies they have practiced in competitive settings.  Swimmers will swim ALL EVENTS offered for their age group and gain the knowledge that they can do any distance or stroke event.  AGE 2 swimmers are looking to qualify for JO’s as well as National level swim competitions.  ALL WESTBROOK SEALS HOSTED MEETS ARE MANDATORY. 

Please note this may be the highest level some swimmers achieve even at High School Levels based on interest/commitment level.

Recommendation of AGE 2 AND Senior coaches is required for any group changes.

 

Ability Criteria for moving from AGE 2 to Senior Group:

 

  • Minimum age of 12 (no max age)
  • Minimum of 5 practices a week
  • Attendance demonstrates understanding of commitment level necessary to attain higher levels of training and performance
  • Should have at least 8 Maine State Championship state cut times (15-18 time standards) or 3 AAA USA Swimming time standards
  • Must have legal times in ALL events
  • Ability to handle a 2 hour practice regularly
  • Use correct technique while training to enhance aerobic training to its fullest potential
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of clock reading, knowledge of pace/interval, understanding of set structures
  • Be on time, listen and respect coaches and teammates, respect pool equipment and do your best at practice
  • Be ready socially, emotionally, and physically for a higher demand
  • Must have their own equipment bag with all supplies necessary

 

Senior Group

SENIOR – Fully engaged swimmers (commit to participation with this group from September to March, April to July)

SENIOR –

The SENIOR group is the Seals’ group consisting of highly competitive swimmers who wish to train for national level competition.  Swimmers in this group have decided that swimming will be their primary sport. This group has mandatory practice (6 out of 8 practices scheduled) and meets attendance requirements.  Swimmers will practice 6 times per week for up to 2 hours, 40 minutes of dryland 2 times per week, as well as lead Mentoring sessions on Saturday.  Meet opportunities will consist primarily of meets outside of our LSC.  These can include team travel meets where coaches and chaperones will travel as a group (not all parents are required to attend the meet).  Swimmers in this group are self-motivating and willing to push themselves and their teammates.  Swimmers in this group must be at least 12 years old. These swimmers demonstrate the desire to achieve high levels of competitive excellence.   ALL WESTBROOK SEALS HOSTED MEETS ARE MANDATORY.  

 

HS Prep and Middle School Prep - Preparing High school and Middle school for their competitive seasons (commitment from September to mid-November HS prep, mid-November to February MS prep)

High School PREP –

The HS PREP group will swim from September to mid-November.  This group is designed for swimmers who wish to get into shape for their HS seasons.  The group will meet 1 hour and 30 minutes 3xs a week with the goal of teaching proper stroke technique and race strategy.  Swimmers can attend meets not hosted by the seals program if they wish, however Seals hosted meets are MANDATORYOnce the HS Season starts swimmers can participate in swim meets with a nominal fee or join another training group offered by the Westbrook Seals.

Middle School PREP –

The MS PREP group will run from mid-November to the end of February.  This group will help middle school swimmers learn the competitive strokes, turns, starts and rules of the sport.  This group will meet for 1 hour 2xs per week with the focus being on the fun side of competitive swimming.  Swimmers can attend meets not hosted by the seals program if they wish, however Seals hosted meets are MANDATORY.  Once the MS Season starts swimmers can participate in swim meets with a nominal fee or join another training group offered by the Westbrook Seals.
