The Farmington Family YMCA Swim Team offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the Farmington Family YMCA Swim Team to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

FARMINGTONFAMILY YMCA STINGRAYS

Practice Group Descriptions

MINIRAYS: This is our introductory, first developmental group. Interested swimmers MUST be deep water safe AND able to swim 25 meters freestyle with their face in the water and 25 meters backstroke WITHOUT stopping. Emphasis will be placed on learning how to be a positive team member. In the pool the swimmers will be taught proper arm motion in the freestyle and backstroke as well as mastering circle swimming patterns. Also, an introduction into the breast and butterfly strokes will be included during the season. The main focus is that the kids are having fun. Minirays will have three 40 minute practice sessions per week and one mandatory swim meet per month. A coach will be in the water with the Minirays once per week. Attendance is taken for informational purposes.

BRONZE:This is our second developmental group. The emphasis is on the fundamentals of the sport of swimming. The swimmers will be taught the freestyle and backstroke flip turns as well as bi-lateral breathing techniques in freestyle. Swimmers will also be taught how to dive off the starting blocks. Further introduction and progression of the four competitive strokes will take place. Also in this group, swimmers will begin doing complete sets and will begin to learn how to read a pace clock with coaches’ assistance. The Bronze group will have three one-hour practice sessions per week and one mandatory swim meet per month. A coach will be in the water with the swimmers once per week. Again attendance will be taken for informational purposes.

SILVER:This is our beginning competitive group. Emphasis will be placed on proper stroke technique in the four competitive strokes. Early in the season the swimmers must be able to complete a swim set using the pace clock without coaches’ assistance. Coaches will assist the swimmers on mastering breastroke pull-out, bi-lateral breathing, Individual Medley turns, and will also introduce interval training. Goal setting will be introduced and reviewed with the swimmers during the season. Swimmers need to be able to sustain a 2,000-2,500 meter work-out during their stay in the Silver group. This group will practice 4-5 times per week for one hour to one hour and fifteen minutes each day. Swimmers are expected to attend 70% of all practices and attend all meets for which they qualify. Attendance will be taken.

GOLD:The focus of this group is to get the swimmer to develop into a competitive swimmer. Coaches will teach the swimmers about the progression of a swim season, the importance of setting goals both in and out of the pool, and familiarize the swimmers with the taper process as well as other aspects of being a competitive swimmer. Dry land exercises will be introduced at this level. Swimmers will progress toward advanced interval training, learning how to check their heart rate and being able to demonstrate a descending set. Coaches will concentrate on teaching different racing strategies; with continued emphasis on proper stroke technique. Swimmers will get to watch their stroke through video evaluation that will be done each season at swim meets and/or swim practice. The Gold group practices 1 ½ hours a day, 5-6 times per week. Swimmers are expected to attend 80% of all practices and attend all meets for which they qualify. Attendance will be taken.

SENIOR/NATIONAL:This is our most advanced, competitive group, designed for the State or Zone qualifying high school aged swimmer looking to advance to the National Level and beyond. Out of the pool the swimmers will learn about setting time related goals for both high school and FFYS seasons, different training methods, different taper methods, and most importantly, the benefits of maintaining a twelve month work-out program. An extensive dry land program will be given to the swimmers three days a week. This will include weight training, medicine balls, stretch cords and other activities. This group trains about 35,000 – 40,000 yards per week. In the pool, swimmers will learn their training threshold by demonstrating a variety of high intensity sets. Video stroke evaluation will also take place during the season at swim meets and/or practices. The Senior Group practices 6 days a week for two or 2 ½  hours per session. Swimmers are expected to attend 90% of all practices and attend all meets for which they qualify. Attendance will be taken.
