Practice Policies

 Practice Policies

What happens during practice?

A typical practice includes a warm-up set with light swimming, kicking, pulling and drill work. The content of the workout varies by practice group.  It will include drill sets to improve technique, as well as conditioning sets to improve strength and endurance.

How many practices will my swimmer be expected to atttend?

The number of practices, the expectations for participation and the amount of technique instruction relative to conditioning varies by swim group. See our page about Practice Groups.

What does my swimmer need to bring?

For every practice, Swimmers should have:

  • Tight fitting swim suit
  • Goggles
  • Swim cap, if the swimmer prefers to wear one
  • Water bottle
  • Towel
  • Shampoo and conditioner

Also, please refer to our practice group apparel and equipment chart for group specific equipment requirements.

Parents and Practice

Swimmers are expected on deck and ready to swim AT LEAST 5 MINUTES BEFORE THE START OF PRACTICE.  This gives our coaches enough time to make important announcements, explain practice drills and connect with swimmers individually as needed.

When you arrive, you may choose to simply drop your swimmer off for their practice, or you may prefer to observe the practice session.

Staying to observe practice gives you an opportunity to meet other parents. It also offers you the chance to see your child's coach in action, which drills your swimmer is working on and the progress your swimmer is making. Parents may view practices from the Pool Gallery, located up the stairs found in the main pool entrance.

  • Piranhas Swim Club parents are not allowed on the pool deck during practice.

Coaches need their athletes' full attention during practice.  If you need to speak with a coach, connect with them before or after practice, or contact them via email or phone.  If you're finding it a challenge to connect with your coach, Head Coach Lucas Baarlaer will be happy to assist you with any questions you may have. He can be reached at lucas.baarlaer@piranhaswimclub.org or 612-492-1460.

Dropping Off Your Swimmer

If you choose to drop off your swimmer for their practice, we ask that you accompany your swimmer into the pool building or wait until you observe your swimmer go through the pool building door. This is to ensure the safety of ALL swimmers arriving and departing during hectic practice times.  Do not pull away until you are sure your swimmer is inside the pool building.  Winter pick-ups offer unique weather challenges.  Have your swimmer wait inside and watch out the main pool door for you or come inside to retrieve them.

Picking Up Your Swimmer

Please make sure they are picked up NO LATER THAN 15 MINUTES AFTER THE END OF PRACTICE.  We expect all parents to be at the pool at the conclusion of swim practice.  There will be coaching staff at the pool until all swimmers are picked up -- please be respectful of their time!  If this policy becomes noticeably abused, our Head Coach will work with you to address the issue.

Last-Minute Schedule Changes

Practice schedule changes are typically planned well in advance and will be clearly communicated in weekly update e-mails as well as on the practice calendar.  However, some changes occur with short notice because of unpredictable circumstances; inclement weather, unexpected facility scheduling changes and pool malfunctions. These changes will be communicated to you via e-mail and/or text notification as soon as possible. Please be sure your account has current email and cell phone information, and be in the habit of checking for these last minute updates.  Please follow the steps below to verify your cell phone for text messaging alerts.

  1. Go to My Account > My Account
  2. In the “Email and Text Messaging Setup” box, click the newly added cell number and click the Verify button
  3. A pop up will say that a text has been sent to the cell number for verification
  4. Check your cell phone for this message and note the Verification / Validation code. Note that some cell carriers can take awhile to deliver the message.
  5. Enter this number in the “Verification Code” field and click Verify. This MUST be done for the number to be activated for use through OnDeck
  6. The cell number will appear in the box with the “Verified” checkbox checked
