What’s a “Swim-A-Thon”? The Swim-A-Thon is a major fundraising event for Velocity Aquatics. Swimmers solicit pledges in exchange for their personal commitment to meet a goal of swimming up to 200 lengths in a 2-hour time frame (that’s nearly 3 miles!) Each swimmer may set their own goal based on their abilities – experienced swimmers typically aim for 200 lengths or more, while newer swimmers may adjust as needed. The goal is for our swimmers to challenge themselves physically, to set and meet a goal, and to have fun!
How do swimmers get pledges? Swimmers are encouraged to ask for pledges from family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who supports their swimming efforts. Pledges are made in the form of monetary donations – either a set amount for meeting their goal, or a per-length pledge. Most pledges are typically a fixed amount and not a per-length pledge. This type of donation helps encourage our swimmers to participate, helps them be rewarded for meeting their goal, and eliminates anxiety about the number of lengths they swim.
Pledge forms and envelope will be distributed during practice sometime in December. Meanwhile, pledge forms are linked below - feel free to print your own at any time. Please use these forms to track and record your fundraising efforts. Take advantage of seeing extended family over the holidays and have your swimmers hit up relatives for pledges!
Incentive Awards. Velocity Aquatics will provide awards to the top 3 fundraisers. There will also be a raffle during the event where your swimmer will be able to win some fun prizes – the more they raise, the more chances to win.
Why are we doing a Swim-A-Thon? Fundraising events such as the Swim-A-Thon, Fall Harvest Sale, and others are important to ensure that Velocity has a cash reserve fund on hand to ensure we have sufficient cash flow in case of a revenue shortage as well as for capital improvements, replacement equipment, marketing, and social events. Having a cash reserve also helps prohibit frequent changes to monthly dues as enrollment fluctuates throughout the year. Additionally, 5% of the proceeds will go to USA Swimming to support meets, events, and functions of USA Swimming.
Help is needed! To conduct the Swim-A-Thon, we need a minimum of 25 volunteers for each location to help count laps, cheer on swimmers, collect pledges and enter data, and provide event support. If you are available to be at the pool during the event for either location, please let us know by contacting one of the lead planners (contact info below). We will also be coordinating a signup genius as we get closer to the date. Meanwhile, please mark your calendars!!
Thanks so much!
