Practice Group Placement Standards - As of Summer 2017

Team Groups

The Y Swim Team is divided into several training groups, done with the consideration of the swimmers’ development of technical skills, training abilities, maturity, competitive levels, time standards and group availability.  The progressive structure of these groups provides a setting in which swimmers are continually challenged yet are able to experience individual and team successes.  All group placement decisions are made by the coaching staff and done so in the best interest of the swimmers and their long term development.

Time Standards

The Age Group and Senior squads use time standards to determine placement in each practice group. These time standards are based upon USA Swimming National Age Group Motivational times (short course yards).

Novice Group

The Novice Group provides younger swimmers with the opportunity to develop the fundamental skills of the four competitive strokes, turns and starts, plus to learn basic racing skills and lane etiquette. Although participation in other sports and activities is normal, novice swimmers are encouraged to attend 2-3 practices a week.

Features of the Senior Practice Group:

  • We offer 5-7 workouts per week

  • There is no minimum number of workouts that you must attend to participate in the senior practice group.

  • We are a year round High School Preparation and Maintenance Program.

  • Swimmers may compete in other sports/activities (if you take time off, you won’t lose your spot on the team)

  • You have the option to do YMCA Meets, Swim Unattached at USA Meets or you can just train to "stay in shape" for the High School Season.

Training Philosophy of the Senior Practice Group:

  • Our workouts are thoughtfully planned and employ the scientific principles of training and periodization (we don't use generic workouts that are available on the internet).

  • The training emphasis is on a proper progression for each swimmer and appropriate manipulation of the energy systems.

  • We emphasize “Quality” over “Quantity” in our training.

  • We do “Event Specific” training based on your best events (sprints, strokes, middle-distance and distance).

  • Training intervals are individualized for each swimmer, so they have the proper work –to- rest ratio.

  • We focus on developing “Speed Reserve” and Anaerobic Capacity, while continuing to build an Aerobic Base and O2 Debt Tolerance.
