Practice Groups

 

National:

  • Typical Age: 15+
  • Competitive Swim Experience: 3-11 years
  • Entrance Criteria: Coach's Invitation
  • Expectations: Continued refinement of technical skills; increased aerobic, core strength & strength training; continued development and improvement of interpersonal & team skills; competitive focus on championship & regional meets
  • Practice Offerings: Practice Duration: 2 hours     Frequency: 9 practices/weekly

Senior:

  • Typical Age: Incoming Freshman
  • Competitive Swim Experience: 3-11 years
  • Entrance Criteria: Coach's Discretion; Must be an incoming freshman in high school
  • Expectations: Continued refinement of technical skills; increased aerobic, core strength & strength training; continued development and improvement of interpersonal & team skills; competitive focus on championship & regional meets
  • Practice Offerings: Practice Duration: 2 hours     Frequency: 9 practices/weekly

Blue:

  • Typical Age: 13-14
  • Competitive Swim Experience: 3-7 years
  • Entrance Criteria: Coach's Discretion; Achieve 'B Cuts' in Freestyle and at least one odd stroke in the 13-14 age group
  • Expectations: Continued refinement of technical skills; increased aerobic, core strength & strength training; priority on interpersonal & team skills (leadership, goal setting, self-accountability); competitive focus on championships and regional meets
  • Practice Offerings: Practice Duration: 2 hours        Frequency: 8 practices/weekly

Orange:

  • Typical Age: 13-14
  • Competitive Swim Experience: Coach's Discretion
  • Expectations: Continued refinement of technical skills; focus on interpersonal & team skills (leadership, goal setting, self-accountability); focus on district and championship competitions; to introduction to core strength training
  • Practice Offerings: Practice Duration: 1.75 hours    Frequency: 6 practices/weekly

Hurricane:

  • Typical Age: 9-12
  • Competitive Swim Experience: 2-4 years
  • Entrance Criteria: Coach's Discretion; Must be at least 9 years old; Achieve 'A Cuts' in Freestyle and at least one odd stroke in their current age group or a 13-14 'B Cut' time
  • Expectations: Continued refinement of technical skills; focus on interpersonal & team skills (leadership, goal setting, self-accountability); focus on district and championship competitions; to introduction to core strength training
  • Practice Offerings: Practice Duration: 1.75 hours    Frequency: 6 practices/weekly

Typhoon:

  • Typical Age: 12 & U
  • Competitive Swim Experience: 1-3 years
  • Entrance Criteria: Coach's Discretion; Successfully complete the IM Ready or IMX Challenge for their current age group (requires competition); Achieve at least 1 10&U 'B Cut' Time Standard (requires competition)
  • Expectations: Expand and refine technical skills; improve physical stamina and aerobic training yardage; learn how to interval train (use pace clock)
  • Practice Offerings: Practice Duration: 1.5 hours     Frequency: 5 practices/weekly

Monsoon:

  • Typical Age: Open
  • Competitive Swim Experience: Little to 1 year
  • Entrance Criteria: Expand and refine technical skills; improve physical stamina to enable swimmers to complete 50 yards legally of each competitive stroke
  • Practice Offerings: Practice Durations: 1.25 hours  Frequency: 4 practices/weekly

Pre-Comp (Otters):

  • Typical Age: Open
  • Competitive Swim Experience: None
  • Entrance Criteria: Coach's Discretion; Demonstrate basic knowledge of backstroke and freestyle; swim unaided for a minimum of 25 yards using any stroke
  • Expectations: Learn correct stroke; turn & dive technique; For a strong technical foundation for successful competitive swimming
  • Practice Offerings: Practice Duration: 1 hour         Frequency: 4 practices/weekly

 

Dry-land

Dry-land practices will include core strength, flexibility, agility and aerobic stamina for all levels and include some strength training for our senior level athletes.  Currently we in the process of developing a new program with the help of personal training and healthy living staff at the Y.  Dry-land will run for up to 30 minutes three days a week before practice and up to 60 minutes before or after practice on Saturdays for our senior swimmers.  Our younger groups will also do dry-land training for no more than 30 minutes before or after practice no more than three days a week.  Dry-land is considered a part of practice and attendance is expected.  Please arrive on time and in appropriate dry-land attire.
