Tigersharks Program

Team History and Philosophy

The Folsom Tigersharks were formed in 2010 in response to a growing population of swimmers in the Folsom/El Dorado Hills area.  Since the team's formation, all swimmers in the area have a team to join without being turned away or placed in an overpopulated pool.  The Tigersharks are both a recreational AND competitive swim team.   We provide an age-group competitive swimming experience in a recreational atmosphere.  Click the following link to read more about our mission and philosophy on our website:  Team Mission  Click the following link to read the Tigersharks Team Handbook.

Tigersharks and Sharkfins

Our program is split into two main groups of swimmers:  Tigersharks and Sharkfins.  The Tigersharks consist of swimmers ages 4-18 who have some swim experience and are able to compete in swim meets.  The Sharkfins are for swimmers ages 4-10 who have some swim experience, and who are comfortable in the water, but still need to learn basic strokes.  The Sharkfins do not compete in swim meets.

League and Dual Meets

The Folsom Tigersharks are part of the Northern California Swim League (NCSL).  This League consists of five  conferences, which have four to five teams within each.  NCSL teams reside all across the Sacramento Valley.   A swim team will compete  against each of the other teams in their conference.  These competitions are call "dual swim meets", and are held on Saturdays.  In addition, a team will compete against one or two non-conference teams.  All dual meets in a team's schedule make up the team's regular swim season.   We encourage all swimmers to attend as many meets as possible.   Meets provide a fun atmosphere for the swimmers to strive to realize their goals and bond with the rest of the team.  Click the following link for further details:   League Info

"Champs"

At the end of the regular swim season, a championship meet is held (a.k.a. "Champs").  At Champs, all teams in a given conference compete against each other over two days.  Champs is the culminating event for a team's season.  All swimmers are urged to attend in order to realize not only their individual potential, but also to contribute the team's success.

Facility

The Tigersharks practice and host swim meets at the state-of-the-art Vista Del Lago High School swim facility in Folsom.  The facility is short course pool (25 yard laps) equipped with 10 lanes, starting blocks, timing touch-pads, lights, bleachers and a large LED scoreboard.  In addition, there is a concession stand  as well as restrooms on-deck.  For dual meets, families can setup tents on the soccer field adjacent to the pool.  There is ample parking in the lot adjacent to the pool.  Click the following link for further details on the facility:   Vista Pool

Tigersharks Practice

The NCSL swim season runs from April to July.  Practices begin in early April.  During school, practices are offered in the evening.   During summer, we go to a morning practice schedule.  All practices are offered every weekday at the Vista Del Lago pool.   The practice schedule is determined by a combination of age-groups and swimming ability.   Coaches will determine each swimmer's practice session during the first few weeks of practice.   Although coaches do not track attendance, swimmers should attend at least three practices per week during school, and ideally every day during summer.  This will provide a swimmer the best chance to see improvements, be competitive in meets and to get the most out of their overall experience.

Meet Commitments/Attendance

  • Tigersharks team standings in the NCSL league are based on attendance of our swimmers at meets, so swimmer attendence is critical to the continued success of our program.
  • Tigersharks competitive swimmers are required to swim in 3 dual meets plus participate in the end-of-season conference meet (“Champs”).
  • Meet declaration deadline for your swimmer (IN or OUT) is the Monday before the meet unless otherwise specified.

Sharkfins Practice

Practices start when school is out for the summer, and will be between the hours of 9:30am-1:30pm (specific times have not yet been determined).  Each practice is 45 minutes in duration. On average, we spend about 10 minutes or so on dry-land/information/instruction and 35+ minutes in the water. We recommend at least 3 days a week for consistency and conditioning, but some kids come 5 days. We use fins, kickboards, noodles, and the timing clock. Kids will learn to start, turn, and finish.

Water Evaluation

All new swimmers to the Tigersharks and Sharkfins program are required to attend a Water Evaluation.  The Water Evaluation is nothing more than a swimmer going from one end of the pool to the other (1 lap) in less than 1 minute.  The Water Evaluation schedule will be published on our website at registration time.  Individual swimmers (10 & under) that do not meet the one minute water safety standard will be given an additional option to participate on the Sharkfins this season.

Registration

Registration will open in January for the upcoming swim season.  All registrations are processed via our website with credit card payment only.  Registration fees cover ALL swim meet and Champs participation.   We offer multiple-swimmer discounts for families with more than one swimmer.  In addition to registration, families should expect to purchase a team suit and practice equipment.  A list of required and recommended equipment will be made available on our website shortly after the start of the season.
