Volunteer with the Sharks

Meet Worker - We need all hands on deck when we host USA Swim Meets. There are many positions available. Get out of the spectator area and support your swimmer by working at meets. Sign-ups for meet volunteers will be posted for each meet.

Officiate - Get the best seat in the house for all the swim meets. Become a USA Certified Official. Training is free and the rewards are great. Contact USA certified Referee Jim Riggs at jsriggs1@bellsouth.net for more information on this exciting opportunity.

 Below is a list of swim meet jobs. Note that some jobs start before the actual meet weekend. Please contact us if you have any questions or want possess another skill you want to share.

Hospitality Chair

This area is often overlooked as it is often behind the scenes.  If often includes serving visiting coaches and officials meals and snacks during well deserved breaks at meets.

Hospitality also includes serving water to timers, officials, and coaches during the hot summer months as they volunteer their time outdoors in the elements.  

A successful Hospitality Chair will Identify meet needs for food and coordinate donations. Maintain hospitality room and provide snacks to volunteers.

 

Knowledge of meet hospitality Before and during meet
Meet Setup Helps bring supplies and equipment to the pool either a day before or first day of the meet. No experience needed Coordinate with Meet Director
Meet Director Coordinate all aspects of the meet. Extensive meet knowledge Before, during and after meet.
Meet Marshall Monitor pool deck for safety.  Verify that only people with appropriate credentials are allowed on deck. No experience needed 30 minutes prior to warm-ups and during meet
Runners Facilitate paper flow. Pick up DQ slips and timer sheets after each event. Bring paperwork to Admin table. Post results if needed. No experience needed 15 minutes prior to meet start and during meet
Announcer Announces upcoming events. Preliminary results and finals swimmers. Reads advertisements from sponsors. Use microphone and read lists of names. 15 minutes prior to meet start and during meet
Ribbon Writer

Post Result Sheets, Put award labels on ribbons and/or medals and separate by team. Assist Runner when needed and time allows. May need to remain after each session to for a short time to finish labeling and sorting awards.

No experience needed 15 minutes prior to meet start and during meet, possibly after the session.
Deck Parent Sometimes called "kid pushers". These parents are on deck to assist the younger swimmers. They gather the swimmers by event, heat and lane and make sure they get to their race on time. This position is only filled for 10 and under meet sessions. On the Job training, not difficult 15 Minutes prior to start of the meet session.
Timers Use a stop watch to time a swimmer during his swim. No experience needed 45 minutes prior to session start to attend brief meeting
Head Timer Coordinate timers at the beginning of meet session. Make sure they have watches, lane sheets, clipboards and pencils. Start watches with signal and monitor need for back up watch to be given to a timer.  Observe lane timers to ensure they are timing correctly and not stopping watches or pressing plungers prematurely. Work as a timer previously is very helpful for this job. 45 minutes prior to session start to attend brief meeting
Clerk of Course  Manage athlete adds/changes/scratches  prior to meet start. Put lane timer sheets on clipboards prior to meet start.  Print result sheets and award labels. Post prelim results and keep track of time deadlines for signing up. Manage Time Trial signups and collect fees. Assist young swimmer to blocks during age group meets. Meet software experience helpful. Willingness to learn and work on computers. 30 minutes prior to warmups and during meet
Computer Assistant Work with Computer Operator to learn the computer part of the Admin Team if needed. Swim meet knowledge helpful 15 minutes prior to warmups and during meet
Floaters Fill in where needed and as experience allows   From start of warmups and during meet
Stroke and Turn Official Judge swimmers per USA Swimming rules on stroke, turns and finish. Notify head judge of possible disqualifications. Maintain a professional demeanor on deck. USA on-line test. Follow current NC Swim requirements for certification 45 minutes prior to meet start to sign-in with referee
Hospitality Assistants Work with Hospitality Chair to provide snacks/meals to meet personnel No experience needed 15 minutes prior to warm-ups and during meet
Volunteer Check-In Work with Volunteer Chair. Sign in volunteers at the beginning of each session.Document service and needs to Volunteer Chair. No experience needed 15 minutes prior to warm-ups and during meet
Starter Work on deck with Referee and follow USA Swimming rules to officially start the heat. Conduct the timers meeting prior to each session start. USA on-line test. Follow current NC Swim requirements for certification 45 minutes prior to meet start to sign in with referee
Heat Sheet Sales Sell heat sheets at the start of each session. Manage money and deliver cash box back to Volunteer Coordinator. None 15 minutes prior to warmups until 30 minutes after meet start.
