 TYDE Competitive Track

Track Goals & Purpose

The Competitive Track is designed to help swimmers continue developing proper stroke technique and learn concepts/terminology related to competing within the sport. At this level of the program swimmers are introduced to aerobic training sets, increased practice availability, and competition through YMCA league meets.  Through these meets, swimmers begin to understand the "team" nature of the sport as they compete with their TYDE teammates from across the region.

Developmental Focus

Competitive Track swimmers are encouraged to practice and compete regularly throughout the season with a focus on YMCA competition with other teams across the region. All swim and strength workouts will focus on developing the following skills:

  • Understanding the purpose of intervals and "send offs" using the pace clock
  • Improvement of stroke technique to complete competitive races in every stroke
  • Basic understanding of pacing within practices and race strategy
  • Application of basic dry-land exercises to improve general athleticism and stroke technique
  • Preparation for entrance to the Performance Track

Competition Focus

Competitive Track swimmers will be registered for YMCA meets, meaning that they will compete in the "Closed YMCA" meets offered throughout the region as well as TYDE intrasquad meets.

  • Participation is encouraged in all TYDE hosted meets (with the exception of the February Qualifier, which is a USA meet)
  • Regular participation is encouraged in all YMCA meets as directed by group coach
  • Season planning will focus on highest performance at GYSSA and USRY Championship Meets at the end of the Short Course (March) and Long Course (July) Seasons
