Mark Taffe - Head Coach 


Coach Taffe is a 1978 graduate of Haverhill High School and  a graduate of Rider College with a BA in Psychology, earning that degree in 1984.  Coach Taffe swam thru college and was a 4 year letterman.  His coaching career started as the assistant coach at Lawrenceville Academy swim team.  From 1985 to 1986 he was the assistant coach of the Haverhill High School girls swim team, followed by 10 years as the assistant coach at MVP/Magnus Aquatic group.  He has been the head coach of the Andover High School mens swim and dive team for 19 years.  Coach Taffe is in his 12th year as the Head Coach at the BURBANK YMCA.  He enjoys working with athletes of all ages and abilities.  In his rare spare time, he enjoys golfing.




Jen Sullivan- Assistant Coach
Jen is in her 18th year of coaching, the first 5 years were spent as the Head Coach for the North Suburban YMCA Vikings, where she built the team from 40 swimmers up to over 100.  She has been an assistant coach with Burbank for the past 12 years.  Jen originally began competitive swimming as an 8 year old, and swam for the same team she originally coached.
Jen graduated from Babson College in 1996 with a BA/ BS in Marketing, Communications and Literature and currently works for her family business running an Insurance Agency in Everett, MA. 

Mike Houlihan - Assistant Coach

Coach Houli began coaching with the Burbank YMCA Bluefins in the spring of 2007 and works with all ages and levels. He thoroughly enjoys enhancing his practice sessions with music, team-building sets and activities. Mike also works as a school counselor at a middle school. 

     At age 6 he joined a competitive summer league and continued racing through college at SUNY Geneseo and for several years beyond as part of the MIT master's team. He captained his high school and college teams, where he held various records (400 and 800 Free Relay, 500, 1000, 1650), most of which have since been broken. 

   When not doing laps for exercise he enjoys teaching his two young children to swim



Jeff Holmes-Assistant coach

Jeff Holmes is a recent addition to the BYB coaching staff, and has coached the Burbank YMCA Masters swim group since 2015. Jeff enjoys teaching all age groups and brings an enthusiasm for swim technique and effective drills to his practices.


While Jeff enjoyed many sports growing up, it wasn't until he was an adult that he discovered a passion for competitive swimming. He enjoys competing in Masters meets and a variety of open water swim races.

Jeff works as a senior manager for Sanofi Genzyme. He has chemical engineering degrees from the University of Maine and Auburn University, as well as a MBA from Boston University. He lives in Wakefield with his wife Melissa and two children Charlotte and Calvin who love being Bluefins.


Ryan Bachur-Assistant Coach


Ryan is entering his second season as an assistant coach for the Bluefins, working primarily with the Senior/National group. He swam for BYB in high school and was a member of the Bluefins' National Team. Ryan went on to swim for Colby College where he holds two school records. In his senior season, he captained the team to its best dual meet record in 7 years.


Ryan graduated from Colby in 2015 with a degree in Economics and History. He currently works in finance.

Sydney Seo - Assistant Coach

Sydney is going into her third season as an assistant coach for the Bluefins. She swam for BYB in high school and was also a member of the Bluefins' National Team. She is currently studying at WPI where she swims for their college team and is working towards degrees in Mechanical and Materials Science Engineering.
