Registration for the next upcoming Lifeguard Training will start in the Spring!
New Lifeguard Courses: This course is for new or untrained lifeguards. Successful completion of the course will result in certification for one year in Professional Life Guarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Automatic External Defibrillation and Blood borne Pathogens and Emergency Oxygen. All certifications are through the Starfish Aquatics Institute and American Safety and Health Institute. THIS TRAINING EXCEEDS NATIONAL STANDARDS AND IS FULLY RECOGNIZED BY THE MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH . Please note that this is not an American Red Cross course. Please read on to learn about the differences and reasons why we teach this program.
Prior to attending the course, the students will take part in an online self-study and self-paced overview course which will cover all major topics of the course. The course is highly interactive. The second portion of the course is a practical portion where students will participate in hands-on learning activities and will be tested in actual lifeguarding situations. In addition, the importance of professionalism and safety are also strongly stressed. Please note that the dates listed below are only for the practical portion of the course and the online portion can be completed at any point prior to the course. Many people ask why the certification is only good for one year. Due to professional experience, as well as national standards, it has been proven that since life guarding is traditionally not a year round occupation in Massachusetts, skill competency drastically decreases each month the skills are not used. Even if one is a very active lifeguard, the probability of having to make a rescue is very minimal, meaning that their lifesaving skills are not being reinforced. While some agencies do offer three year certifications, many employers prefer the Starguard program due to the fact that it requires individuals to re-certify each year, as well as possess exceptional skills. Students must be able to swim 200 yards with and without a rescue tube, as well as tread water for two minutes and retrieve a diving brick at a depth of 10 feet.
The two day practical portion of the course includes a one hour lunch break. Students are not permitted to miss ANY portion of the course. They must complete one online written exam with a passing grade of 80 %, as well as practical exam of their lifesaving skills. Cancelation Policy: There will be a $125 non-refundable deposit associated with this course.
If cancelation is made more than 14 days in advance: Students have the option to receive their money back minus the non-refundable deposit or transfer to a future course at no additional charge.
If cancelation is made less than 14 days in advance: The student forfeits their right to any refund. Students will be able to transfer to a future course on a space available basis at no additional cost.
