Swim Coaches

Dave Nasca - Head Swim Coach

Hold on to your swim caps, Woodley!  Dave Nasca is returning as your swim coach this summer!  One of the most highly respected coaches in the NVSL, Dave began his competitive swim career as one of Woodley’s own and he still holds an 8-and-under relay record on Woodley’s record board!

Dave comes to Woodley this summer having achieved Divisional titles for ten teams since he started coaching for the NVSL in 1979.  The Division 13 title in 1998 was captured by Woodley with Dave as coach.  Dave has helped other coaches learn their craft by being the presenter at the NVSL coaches’ clinics.  He also has coached for USA swimming teams and has coached high school swim for Falls Church High School and Bishop O’Connell in the past.

Many Woodley swimmers recognize Mr. Nasca as their math teacher at O’Connell.  Dave has been teaching math at O’Connell since 1980.

Dave recognizes the importance of teaching swimmers the basics of the strokes.  He knows that the NVSL is a developmental league and while his swimmers learn the strokes, they also learn good sportsmanship and excitement for the sport.  Dave’s teams have won four League sportsmanship awards since 2005.

Helen van Wijngaarden - Assistant Head Coach

My name is Helen van Wijngaarden and I am excited to be the assistant swim coach this year! I started swimming at Woodley as part of the 8 and under team, and continued to compete for the Warriors for the next 12 years. I also swam a variety of events for the swim team while attending Falls Church High School. Currently, I am a student at James Madison University, where I am studying Public Policy and Administration. I am involved in many different intramural sports, Campus Ministry, and am a trumpet player in the Marching Royal Dukes. I am looking forward to a wonderful season dedicated to helping every team member grow as a swimmer, and have lots of fun!
