~ It is highly recommended that all swimmers wishing to be a part of the MCY swim team already have had experience with a swim team prior to being evaluated for the winter short course team.

8 and under Swimmers:

Entry-level Stroke requirements ~

25 continuous yards of both freestyle and backstroke, from one side of the pool to the other.

6 years of age by December 1, 2018

Miami County Y member or willing to join the Y for the winter season.

Recommended 2 or 3 practices AT THE MOST a week, especially for those who are 6 years old.

Emphasis is mainly placed on stroke technique and learning the rules of swimming the four competitive strokes in a meet.  This builds a base so that they can become future competitive swimmers.  On-deck training will consist of an introduction to the competitive strokes, dives, starts, finishes and turns.  Endurance and speed at this age are secondary...it will be good stroke technique that will improve times.  Starts and turns are important to learn those basics at this age and will be practiced regularly in this group.  Also an introduction to the rules of swimming will be given at this level.

9 - 10 Swimmers:

Entry-level Stroke requirements ~

50 continuous yards of 2 competitive strokes and working knowledge of at least one other competitive strokes

9 years of age by December 1, 2018

Miami County Y member or willing to join the Y during the winter season.

Recommended 3 - 4 practices a week

This group places a strong emphasis on stroke mechanics as well as establishing good practice habits and reviewing the rules of swimming.  Sprint training and interval training will also be introduced at this level.  On-deck exercise will build on what the 8 an unders learn and consist of stretching before practices, and before and after races.  In this age group the swimmers will be introduced to longer races in meets...50's - 100's and a 200 Freestyle are usually available.  Regular workout become more important as the swimmer will need to start to build endurance...however the emphasis in practices will remain on strokes, starts, and turns.  Strokes are essential to the speed of a swimmer.  There will be great attention paid to all aspects of competition including race strategy.

11 - 12 Swimmers:

50 continuous yards of 2 competitive strokes and working knowledge of the other two competitive strokes

11 years of age by December 1, 2018

Miami County Y member or willing to join the Y

Recommended 4 - 5 practices a week

This group focuses heavily on good stroke technique in all four of the competitive strokes. Everything that they have learned in prior swim team groups will be advanced and taken a step beyond what they have already learned.  Once technique is established, swimmers will begin to identify with and establish different types of training, such as distance-based and sprint training.   On-deck exercises will consist of advanced stretching techniques and introduction to dry-land training.

13 - 14 Swimmers:

100 continuous yards of two competitive strokes and working knowledge of the other two competitive strokes

13 years of age by December 1, 2018

Member of the Miami County Y or willing to join the Y

Recommended 5 - 6 practices a week...including Saturday am practices

Proper stroke technique continues to be the basis of these practices, along with race strategy, starts, turns and endurance.  Endurance is very important in this group because of the age of the swimmer, their growing bodies and the growing length of the events that are available for these swimmers in most meets.  This group will swim more yardage than the younger age groups and a higher emphasis will be placed on all aspects of the sport of swimming.

The 2018 - 2019 Season:   All High School swimmers and 13 and up swimmers will have Saturday morning practices on all Saturday mornings we do not have meets scheduled for the morning at the Piqua YMCA.

15 and up Swimmers:

100 continuous yards of 2 competitive strokes and working knowledge of the other two competitive strokes

15 years of age by December 1, 2018

Member of the Miami County Y or willing to join the Y

Recommended 5 (MINIMUM) - 6 practices a week...including Saturday am practices

Many of the same things will be emphasized in this practice group as the previous practice group along with working on the individual target goals that the swimmer may have in reaching their sights on "AA", Zone and National YMCA Championship targets.  There will be a combination of swimmers in this group of those who might not desire to reach Nationals, but want to learn to better their technique and endurance and then those who are wanting to make their National cut this year.  We believe combining these swimmers in the same group, but not necessarily in the same lanes will provide leadership and a great camaraderie amongst like-minded swimmers.

The greatest emphasis for part of this group will be to train with a high level of commitment and intensity.  Training will be split by commitment and national qualifying standards.  Those swimmers who have target goals of using MCY swimming as a stepping stone to High School target times or Y Zone and National target times will be asked to demonstrate dedication, quality work habits and manage training requirements along with all the other activities of today's High School students.

The 2018 - 2019 Season:   All High School swimmers and 15 and up swimmers will have Saturday morning practices on all Saturday mornings we do not have meets scheduled for the morning at the Piqua YMCA.
