Practice Notes

Denison practice swimmers (Elite, Cyclone & Typhoon) have another full week of practices this coming week, with a handful of our older swimmers preparing for the TYR Pro Meet the following weekend on June 6, 7 and 8 and the majority of our AG swimmers preparing for the Regional Meet at BG that same weekend.

Please note as on our Team Calendar that Hurricane and Summer Tsu & Wave PM Gahanna practices move back to Tues & Thurs this coming week.  AM Links practices revert back to Mon-Wed AM beginning this Mon June 25 as well.

The week of July 4th we have several practice adjustments, as we do in the following weeks leading into Sr Meet and JO’s.  As always, please check the Team Calendar regularly!

Meets

Thanks again to our Team Families that volunteered to time at the Jill Griesse Meet this past weekend.  We had a bunch of new LCM best times for our swimmers, and a lot of solid attempts at good race planning and execution, some new/harder events for some of our swimmers, and best of all we had a lot of great efforts and great racing!

Open Water Championships are this Wednesday, June 27th and we have our final Open Water practice this coming Mon June 25th at the North end of the beach at Alum Creek Park at 6:30pm.  Good luck to our handful of Open Water Swimmers competing this week (!) and meet details are on our meet page.

We have only Championship Meets remaining, with deadlines for our final 3 LCM meet all approaching and listed below.  All NAAC Summer Swimmers should be signed up for their respective Championship meets (Regionals, JO’s or Sr. Meet), and once swimmers are finished with their highest level competition this summer they are then through with summer NAAC practices.

Meet Deadlines

We have only 3 meets remaining to register for this summer – please note the deadlines that follow and be sure to register your swimmer for their NAAC Championship Meets this Summer!

  • Regional Championship Meet at BGSU         Deadline Sunday June 24 - - TODAY!
  • Senior Championship Meet at Denison          Deadline Thurs June 28
  • JO Championship Meet at Miami U                 Deadline Monday July 9

2018-19 Group Info & Descriptions

We have our initial Group Info posted online under our Team Info tab, under  the 2018-19 Group Info subtab.  We have updated some of our group info to note that we strongly suggest meet participation at certain levels per group as well as our standard requirement of highest level Championship Meet participation that each swimmer qualifies for during the season.

Please note the proposed practice changes for the 2018-19 swim season for Ripple & Breaker (Sat PM instead of Sun PM), Wave moving from Sat evening to Sun afternoon, as well as Wave moving from Mon PM to Thurs PM and Tsunami moving from Thurs PM to Mon PM.  Most other practices are similar/same times aside from Cyclone lifting hopefully moving from Sun to Mon after swim practice, and PLEASE check the Group Info tab for more detail per group!

Please also note that while we are not increasing group programming fees this season that we will also not be including the USA Swimming fees within our regular group fee structure this season.  And again we open for our 2018-19 Season Registration for current Team Families next Sunday July 1st!

Summer Practice Protocols

Summer Storms Protocol

  • For Dension practices they do NOT clear the pool for regular thunder storms but would clear the pool for 30 min for any emergency sirens.
  • For the Links and/or Gahanna we will clear the pool for 30 min from last thunder.  If this happens near the start of a practice and looks like it might clear we will try to do dryland and get some swimming in once the waiting period is through.
    • If in the middle or near the end of practice, and/or a particularly bad or large storm we will end practice.
    • If practice has not yet started but it is storming we will try to swim (even if in the water late) if it looks like it might clear.
    • If it looks like it will storm throughout an entire practice we will cancel practice and will Tweet (naaccoaches), Remind (NAAC Swimming at NAHS), and update the Team Calendar ASAP.

General Summer Practice Protocol

Denison University Pool (Mitchell Center, Trumbull Aquatics Center) for Elite, Cyclone, Typhoon & College swimmers.

Please park in the Denison Athletic Facilities lots by the pool, tennis courts and track on the NE side of the campus.  Swimmers should walk down the stairs directly inside the building, change in the locker rooms, and be on deck ready to swim each day by 7:30am.  If the locker room to pool deck doors are not open please wait patiently – doors to the pool deck are almost always open by or before 7:25am.  Parents may wait in the pool spectator area if open, and/or in the lobby if they would like – the campus is also a nice, scenic, hilly walk.  No thunderstorm practice cancellations or delays.

Gahanna Outdoor Pool @ 148 Parkland Dr, Gahanna 43230 – this is the Creekside pool, for all 4PM LCM Hurricane, Summer Tsunami and Summer Wave swimmers.

Please park in the front lot – the first lot you drive by.  If this lot would happen to be full please park on the east side of the pool in the grass.  Swimmers enter by the main entrance and tell the desk your name and that you are there for NAAC swim practice – no parent entry allowed (you can watch from the perimeter if you’d like).

  • Please arrive by 3:45pm each day – a NAAC Coach must already be at the pool as well.
  • Swimmers may need to help the coaches with LC lane lines before & after practices.
  • Swim practice does NOT include any extra swimming at the Gahanna pool – once practice is through and the lane lines are in place please exit the facility.
  • In case of thunder/lightning there will be the usual 30 min delay from last occurrence, and we will cancel for larger storms via our Google calendar, Twitter (naaccoaches) and Remind (NAAC Swimming).  Please arrange for transportation/car pooling/etc in case of inclement weather.

The Links Pool @ 7100 New Albany Links Dr, NA 43054 for all 8:30AM SCM Hurricane and 3-day Summer Tsunami/Wave swimmers.

Please park in the lot nearest the pool, and/or toward the North side of the parking lot.  Swimmers should enter the pool through the pool gate, change as needed in the restrooms, and be on deck & ready to swim by or before 8:30am.

  • Swimmers may need to help the coaches with LC lane lines before & after practices.

As always, please check the Team Calendar regularly just to be sure of your swimmer’s practice times.

Thanks – NAAC Coaches

NAAC Team Update Thurs Feb 1, 2018

Our first Championship Meet is up in only 2 short weeks…!  More on meets below, and thanks to so many of you for attending our Fire-up Pancake breakfast this past Sunday.  Swimmers will be putting the finishing touches on posters over the next week or so and we will be hanging the posters around the pool deck as our Championship meets approach!

We have both TYR and Last Ditch up this weekend with meet notes below & linked, and we have our own Kicker Classic 10 & under meet up the following Sunday, Feb 11th, with details below for our Home meet as well.  And our AG Regional Championship is the following week…  A busy several weeks for NAAC!  Please check the Team Calendar regularly & help your swimmer(s) stay on track with healthy eating and good sleep so that they can have their best Championship season!

Please note that the USA Swimming SWIMS database will update as meets are reconciled, and please also note that this process is out of our hands and that we will always do everything in our power to get correct seeding for all of our swimmers per meet.  As always, please contact your Lead Coach with questions as a first point of contact, and follow up with Jen B and/or John C if needed.  Coaches per meet this weekend are noted in the details below, and for specific meet questions please contact a coach that will be present at the meet and/or check out our meet page(s) with meet packet, notes, etc for each meet.

Lastly, with many qualifying times, goal times, and possible relay spots in sight for many, it is important for all of our swimmers to remember that swimming is a process and a journey, not only about achieving goals.  Our goals can help guide our actions, but please help your swimmer keep their focus on the process, on simply racing well, so that they might better Learn, Have Fun & Compete no matter what the meet or the circumstances!

Flyover starts will be used, bullpen for 8 & under and 9-10 swimmers only, and further info on seating, facilities, vendors, etc are on our meet page and in the attached note from GCSTO.

Kicker Classic 10 & Under HOME Meet

Due to the large number of entries we received, all NAAC 8 & under swimmers were moved to the first session.  This balanced the session numbers and allowed us to accept all teams into the meet to allow for manageable meet timelines and adequate spectator space per session.  The timelines currently posted to our meet page reflect this change.

We will still need our Team Families to step up and volunteer for the second session of the meet so that we can run an organized, smoothly-running session.  We will also ask that any/all HS swimmers volunteer for the second session so that we can help fill any volunteer spots not covered.  We will particularly need some adult volunteers to help with the bullpen for both sessions, and especially session 2 with only 8 & under swimmers present.  Items to bring are listed near the top of our job sign up page, which we can certainly use; and volunteer jobs to perform at the meet are listed toward the bottom of our job sign up page, which we NEED help with!

Please do volunteer to help at our Kicker Classic Home meet on Sun Feb 11th if you have yet to do so, and assist us in providing a great event for all of the swimmers participating!

Clarification note for the Kelly German meet…  As a reminder, 200 yard and longer events had minimum BB qualifying times.  Typically the meet host adds event qualifying times on the event file so it is clear if a swimmer is eligible to enter an event.  Worthington did not add Q times to their file so the entry process was a little confusing.  So, swimmers without qualifying times were removed from 200 yard + events.  When possible, replacement events were selected.

NAAC Team Update Thurs Nov 16, 2017

Congrats on a great day at the OSSC Thanks for Giving swim meet this past Sunday!  NAAC finished in 3rd place overall out of 18 teams present, with 95% of our Sr swimmers out of this meet since our Sr Championship meet is on deck this coming weekend… so Way to go NAAC Age Group swimmers!!  Top 5 Thanks for Giving NAAC swimmers follow at the bottom of this Update, and a big congrats to Thanks for Giving event winners Luke Axline, Logan Syder and Max White!

And…  So far this season we have three individual Team Records that have been broken!  GREAT swims to the swimmers below! ! !

  1. Kiara Crumbley broke Rachel Jackson'e 2009 13-14 girls 200 fly record 2:13.25 at Golden Bear with a time of 2:13.04.
  2. Carly Meeting broke Haley McLellan's 2009 13-14 girls 1650 free record 19:07.41 at Thanks for Giving with a time of 18:26.13.
  3. Carly Meeting broke Stephanie McManis' 2002 13-14 girls 1000 free record 12:30.13 at Thanks for Giving with a time of 11:11.72.

Before we get to the basics of the week(s) ahead, I do want to address a couple of recent Team issues…

  • Please remind your swimmer to abide by The Golden Rule – we should all be treating others as we would like to be treated.  In the same vein we should all be respecting not only one another, but each others things and the facilities at which we train and compete.  Each day brings an opportunity to be not only a better swimmer, but also a better teammate and a good example for all to follow.

  • Team policy dictates that there will be no coaching, timing or advising from the stands, from parents or others.  This goes for practices as well as meets, and as always there is also NO video taping practices from the standsPlease adhere to this policy across ALL groups, and if a given group continues to have an issue from the stands we will simply move to closed practices for that group.  The swimmers must all learn to listen to and trust the coaches at practices and meets, and to function well in a team environment - - please let the Coaches do the Coaching.  Please also be sure that at meets your swimmer knows to speak to a coach on deck immediately before and after each event, and again – no parents are allowed on deck at any time, practices or meets.

  • Monday Night Clinics will charge for no-shows if Coach Coffman is not notified via email by Sun at noon from this point forward.  Sign-up sheets go up on Tuesdays at 6pm on the bulletin board so that participants must sign up in person to help avoid just this situation.  Please do not sign up for the Clinics if you think your swimmer might not be able to attend, so that our other team members that want the opportunity can take the opportunity to attend.

In this Update…

  • Gold Team

NAAC Team Update Sat Aug 5, 2017

WELCOME TO THE NEW 2017-18 NAAC SWIM SEASON!

All Team Accounts registered between July 1st and 31st should now be active and you should have received a confirmation email yesterday or today with your account log-in instructions.  I will be touching base with occasional Team Updates prior to the start of our season, as will all of your swimmer’s Lead Coaches at some point prior to the start of your group’s practices, and I just wanted to touch on a couple of points today…

  • Please do log in to your Team Account soon to double check that your group registration and payment options are correct for your swimmer(s) so that we can remedy any possible mistakes soon.  Whether paying in-full or on a payment plan, we begin our 2017-18 Team Fees on September 1st, so please plan accordingly.  ALL BREAKER Families please note – our Breaker Team Fees are all due in full on Sept 1st – we do not have a payment plan for Breaker, as indicated in our 2017-18 Team Info HERE.

  • Please also note in the link above the START DATE for your swimmer’s group so that you are aware, and most of our Fall schedule up to Winter Break is posted on our homepage Team Google Calendar as well.  More detailed group info to come later this month.

  • As some of you already know, there was a lot of rain associated with the storm system that rolled through NA this past Wed evening.  There was flooding on and around much of the school Athletic Complex, and the added groundwater pressure did cause a slight crack in the bottom of the NAHS pool.  Please know that this will be fixed ASAP, and that the school was on top of the issue immediately.  We hope to have all repairs completed soon and the pool filled as quickly as possible, and we will let you know if any of our later-August Elite or Cyclone practices happen to be affected.

No worries and hopefully all is corrected quickly and we are good to go as we roll into all of our group practices over the next 6 weeks.

Thanks for choosing NAAC and we are all looking forward to another great season!!

- John Coffman, NAAC Head Coach

Practices for JO and Sectional swimmers are all at Denison next week Mon, Tues and/or Wed, and Sr Meet swimmers are at the Links Mon & Tues, at Denison Wed with all others not competing Wed, and then Thurs and Fri practices for any/all swimmers not competing those day(s) will be at the Links.  Once your swimmer is through with their final competition of the season they are then through with practices until next season – a well-deserved break : )  As always – please check the Homepage Calendar regularly for any possible practice updates or changes, and especially in case of bad weather!

Be on the lookout for Meet Updates this week for Sectionals and JO’s and the following week for Sr. Meet!

If you have yet to register for the coming 2017-18 season please do so ASAP.  We have had over 20 swimmers at New Swimmer Evaluations so far and we had to add 3 new evaluation dates to accommodate interest… and as of today we are now OPEN TO NEW SWIM FAMILIES.  Once a group is full we will keep a wait list for any swimmers closed out of groups and we want ALL of our returning NAAC Swimmers to have a secure spot - - so again, if you have yet to do so PLEASE REGISTER for the 2017-18 season today!!

Once registered you will be charged for your 2018 USA Swimming membership and the $100 deposit, and then approval for our 2017-18 Registration will occur during the first week of August, after our initial registration window has closed and the current summer session is through.  Group fees for the new season begin on Sept 1st, and our Annual Parent Meeting is in the afternoon/evening of Sunday September 17th.  Our full fall and winter practice calendar will be posted soon, and all usual practices per group are listed on our 2017-18 Group Info page.

A BIG CONGRATS to all of our Regional competitors last weekend at Denison as well!  Team scores were not kept, but NAAC had a terrific meet with lots of solid swims all weekend long.  We do allow Finals scratches for new JO cuts achieved during the Prelims sessions, so our top NAAC swimmers per event(s) are not always listed in the top Finals swims below, just FYI Full meet results are posted HERE and are on Meet Mobile as well, under “2017 OH PHST LC Regional Championships.”

Thanks – NAAC Coaches

NAAC Team Update Mon July 3, 2017

Happy 4th of July to all!  With the 4th tomorrow we have no practices – hope you all have a fun, safe holiday and wish any & all of you traveling safe travels.

We are now OPEN for 2017-18 NAAC Registration to our current Team Families for the coming year!  Registration is available now through July 14 to ONLY current NAAC Team Families, and then we open to NEW NA-area families July 15 and to any/all new families on July 22.  All of the above registration windows are open through July 31, and please do register in the initial registration window (by or before July 14) to guarantee your swimmer a spot on the team for the coming year!

CONGRATS to all of our Mike Peppe/John Bruce Memorial competitors over this past weekend!  We had some really good swims this weekend with lots of new LCM JO and Sectional qualifiers, and NAAC finished overall in 4th place out of the 37 teams attending!  We are on track for a strong finish to our summer season, so please have your swimmer(s) at as many practices as possible between now and their Championship competitions, ready to give their best efforts at practice every day.  After your swimmer has competed at their final Championship meet of the season they are then through with practices until we begin their group training again next season.

We have the AG Regional meet at Denison up this weekend, and some adjusted practices this week and going forward to account for all of the Championship Meet preparation needed between our groups.  We will have a Regional Info email out to all later this week once the meet host has all adjustments made from the new qualifying times occurring at meets this past weekend.  And again, PLEASE check our web schedule for end-of-season practice times & locations since there are some changes each week.

All of our remaining Meet Entry Deadlines occur this week or next, and are listed below.  We would like all of our swimmers to compete in their top qualified meet, and for those 14 and under AG swimmers with Sectional qualifying times please plan on attending Sectionals on Wednesday only as we will want you to compete at the JO Meet as your Primary end-of-season meet.  Any of our AG swimmers that have Zone qualifying times and might want to compete for Team Ohio can find out more about the Zone Meet on the Ohio Swimming website HERE and on their dedicated Team Ohio website HERE.

  • Sectionals @ OSU – deadline Thurs July 6

  • JO’s @ Miami of Ohio – deadline Mon July 10

  • Sr. Meet @ BG – deadline Wed July 12

Again, hope you all have a Happy 4th of July holiday – have fun and be safe!

Thanks – NAAC Coaches

NAAC Team Update Mon June 26, 2017

We are rolling through summer quickly with July upon us this coming weekend!  July 1st does also bring the start of our 2017-18 Season Registration as well, with our first tier registration open ONLY to all current NAAC Families from July 1st-July14th.  Registration remains open for all (space allowing per group) until July 31, with New Swimmer evals ongoing in July and Team openings for new swimmers in the NAPLSD beginning July 15th and for any new area swimmers outside the school district beginning July 22ndPlease do sign up in the initial 2 week window if your swimmer(s) will be with us at NAAC again next year as we do often fill and then close groups before the end of July.

We also want to pass along that the The Links pool is back on track for normal pool clarity and that the pool chemicals are re-balanced.  We should be good to go at The Links now!

We have the Mike Peppe Meet on deck at OSU this coming weekend Fri, Sat & Sun, with NO Lifting Thursday evening for our older kids.  We DO have practice Fri AM for any NON-Peppe swimmers in Elite, Cyclone, Typhoon & College 7:30-9:30am, with a meet-adjusted week of practices for Hurricane, Summer Tsunami & Summer Wave – please check the practice schedule!  We will have a specific Peppe Meet Update out later this week, and next week we have 4th of July holiday practice adjustments (so again, please check the practice schedule…!).

Approaching Meet Deadlines

  • AG Regional Meet @ Denison – deadline TODAY, Mon June 26

  • Sectionals @ OSU – deadline Thurs July 6

  • JO’s @ Miami of Ohio – deadline Mon July 10

  • Sr. Meet @ BG – deadline Wed July 12

Per our normal NAAC team protocol, AG swimmers must have at least 5 individual JO cuts in order to forego the Regional Meet and still be eligible to participate on relays, and we do expect all year-round qualified swimmers to participate in the highest level meet qualified for (Regionals, JO’s and/or Sectionals).  Please let your Lead Coach know ASAP if you can NOT compete in a given high level meet, and as usual, once you are through with your highest level of competition with NAAC for the season you are then through with NAAC practices for the season.

We have some big meets lined up for July, and we’ve had some great results to date this summer, particularly with our Team WIN at the JAGS meet in Indy last weekend!!  Pics are on our homepage...!  Big congrats again go out to our Highpoint Winners Andrew Bernsdorf and Luke Axline for their performances at the JAGS meet!  We will be looking forward to more solid performances from our swimmers at the remainder of our July meets, including all of our upcoming Championship Meets, and please continue to give consistent efforts at all practices going forward to increase your chances of even greater swims this summer!

Thanks – NAAC Coaches

Update Archive Information

The background graphic on our website is "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," which is also known as "The Great Wave" or just "The Wave."  The symbolism between NAAC and this well-known classic print from the 1800's is: All of our groups (Breaker through Cyclone/Elite), riding the challenging seas (of practice and competition) together, in search of the Peak off in the distance (our swimming "Peak" at the end of each season). You can find out more about The Great Wave on Wikipedia here:
