TEAM UPDATES

We are bringing back our Team Updates page so that you can keep up to date even if you miss our most current Team Update emails.  Updates will post below with the most recent update at the top of the page, and we hope to have our Swimmers back in the water ASAP!!

Team Update May 28, 2020

NAAC Families & Swimmers –

Lots of info below – please read all so that we are all on the same page as we roll into the start of June and NAAC practices, at last…!  We’re grateful to be able to get back in the water together!!

NAAC will begin practice at the Links starting Monday, June 1st!

We have times & days per group listed on our News Feed (at the bottom of our homepage) today, and our initial return to practice schedule per group is listed below We also hope to be able to get back into the NAHS pool soon as well – discussions are ongoing, and we will keep you all posted in regard to any practice changes, additions, etc.  We realize that not all of these practice times are ideal, and we are grateful to be able to practice all considered.  Once the HS pool is open we will try to eliminate most very early AM practices and most weekend practices.

We will be able to host some practices for ALL groups beginning June 1st, even if in a split A/B fashion with swimming and dryland split over a given practice.  We can have 24 swimmers in the water at a time to begin this summer, so any group practice with over 24 swimmers will be split into A/B for swim/dryland.  All group practice times are listed on our Team Calendar today (and below), and again, once the HS pool opens practice days and times will change.

NAAC Return to Practice Protocols are posted on our News Feed HERE and on our Picture Scroll Buttons (2020 Summer Practice Info!), and must be followed well for your swimmer to practice this summer.  Please note swimmers must arrive on time, ready to swim and do dryland; no locker room use, no deck changing.  Coach protocols are also HERE for reference.

Responsible Restart Ohio Pool Operation criteria are listed HERE, which generally guides facility planning.

Responsible Restart Ohio Skills Training for All Sports criteria are listed HERE, which generally guides our practice planning.

Aside from the above we must abide by whatever additional rules the facilities we rent from decide upon (NAHS & The Links).  We will keep you all posted.

We will not be charging our Beginning 4 groups (Breaker, Ripple, Wave & Tsunami) anything for our summer programming as these groups finished paying for their season in full in March.  In essence we will be swapping Summer season (June & July) for our missed Spring season (April & May) for our Beginning 4 groups.  August will be mostly off time for our Beginning 4 groups.

We will be charging those on a monthly payment plan in our Upper 4 groups (Hurricane, Typhoon, Cyclone & Elite) a one-time 75% amount of a normal monthly payment on June 1st, as April & May payments were cancelled. This will allow NAAC to cover the added covid-related operation costs and remain on even footing for the remainder of this summer – we are not banking any money this year, just FYI.  Please let Coach Coffman know by Noon this Sunday, May 31, if you cannot make this happen in your current financial situation and/or attendance comfort level, and we will help you find an answer.  We will credit Family Accounts that paid in full in Sept 2019 for our Upper 4 groups for the balance of group fees (1.25 of a monthly group fee credit) for the coming season, so all upper group families are charged equally for the season per group.  We are planning for June, July and some of August for our Upper 4 groups.

We have had several new swimmer requests from other teams, and please know that we will take care of our current Team Families first.  We will then open any possible spots for new swimmers based on criteria listed HERE in our News Feed and on our Picture Scroll Buttons (Summer 2020 New Swimmer Info).

If you are planning or have scheduled a Family Vacation PLEASE take your vacation!  We can not guarantee that pools will remain open all summer, and we will most likely train through whatever meet(s) might happen later this summer and/or fall.  As things look today it is doubtful that we will be able to attend any actual meets this summer, but perhaps compete in some virtual meets (?).  If we’ve learned anything in the past 2+ months it’s that situations can change quickly – please take your vacations as you are able.

The Spring Officials Clinic has been cancelled & current Ohio Swimming Officials have been granted a 6 month extension.  More info posted on our Officials Page HERE, and we will update as we receive more info from Ohio Swimming.

We will keep you informed on any new info we receive, and we will keep posting all Team Updates on our Team Updates Page HERE so that you can find all of the info we send out & link to in one place.

Thanks and looking forward to seeing all of our swimmers back in the water!!

- Coach John C and the NAAC Coaches

NAAC Initial Return to Practice

Starting Monday June 1st at the Links

By attending NAAC practices this Summer, your swimmer is voluntarily participating.  NAAC has reviewed all re-opening guidelines as noted above to create our Return to Practice protocols.  That being said, although we will be taking preventative measures to reduce the spread of Covid-19, we cannot guarantee the health and safety of our members.  Returning to practice should, and must be, YOUR choice and what is in the best interest of YOUR family.  No practice group spots will be lost, no meets will be missed, and no coach will take concern should your family choose not to participate this summer.  Please review our protocols with your athletes, as your athletes will be the ones required to follow procedures during practice.  This serves as additional notice in regard to Covid-19 and our NAAC Medical & Liability Waivers.

Team Update May 16, 2020

NAAC Families & Swimmers –

Pool opening rules were posted yesterday evening (5/15) on Responsible Restart Ohio, linked just below if you have yet to see.

https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/static/responsible/Pools-Aquatic-Centers.pdf

Each facility may interpret the State’s rules a little differently, just FYI, and then decide based upon their interpretation of the rules if, how, and when they might open their pool.  Facilities will need to get new protocols established and staff trained before opening as well.

We emailed our proposed NAAC practice, swimmer and coach protocols to several pools last night (5/15) and have heard back from several pools already as well, so please know that the process of getting our swimmers back to practice is moving forward.  We will also need to follow the facility protocols of any pool at which we host practices, and hopefully the facilities take our recommended protocols that we provided last night into consideration for their opening.

As noted in the last update, pools may begin opening Tues May 26th, and as noted above some pools may not yet be ready to open right on the 26th, and we will keep you all posted as we move forward with all of our planning.  We are considering our options across the board, and we will do our best to provide practices across our groups this summer.

And again - Ohio Swimming will also be hosting a Parent & Athlete town hall Zoom Meeting this Sunday, May 17th.  Head Coaches have been meeting with Ohio Swimming leadership weekly and we are planning on doing so for the near future, just FYI.  Full Parent and Athlete Ohio Swimming Meeting info is just below (with an updated LIVE registration link), and hope to see you all back at practices in the near future!!

Thanks – John C

Team Update May 14, 2020

NAAC Families & Swimmers –

Good news from the State of Ohio today that pools can begin re-opening starting Tues May 26th We are still waiting to see what the new pool rules & regulations will actually be, which will hopefully be posted by the State tomorrow evening, Fri May 15th.

Once we have an idea of new State Covid pool rules & Franklin Co gives the further go-ahead for pool openings, we will put our plans into action and hope to have some type of initial NAAC swim practice schedule available soon.  The NAHS pool is scheduled to remain closed until at least early July, and we have been in contact with The Links, Gahanna outdoor, Denison and other area outdoor pools about possible practice availability, and we do have open water (Alum Creek) available for official NAAC practices as well, as soon as the water temp reaches 60 degrees for open water.

Ohio Swimming will also be hosting a Parent & Athlete town hall Zoom Meeting this Sunday, May 17th.  Head Coaches have been meeting with Ohio Swimming leadership weekly and we are planning on doing so for the near future, just FYI.  Full Parent and Athlete Ohio Swimming Meeting info is just below, and hope to see you all back at practices in the near future!!

We will keep you all in the loop as our planning moves forward.

Thanks – John C

Team Update May 1, 2020

NAAC Families & Swimmers -

Hope you are all still faring as well as possible during these shifting times, and that you and yours are staying healthy, safe and sane.  Thanks again to all of our NAAC Families & Swimmers for doing your parts in helping us get through this time, and please know that we are keeping all of our options open to help our swimmers as best we can.

We have been lucky to have some group Zoom Meetings, a Cyclone & Elite Team Walk (socially distanced), as well as a Birthday drive-by that many of our NAAC Families & Swimmers participated in over the past week or so.  Great to have some points of contact for Teammates & Coaches and hopefully we can all see one another at practices sooner than later!

We had planned to celebrate our 2019-20 swim season at Villa Milano earlier this spring, and even though our plans were put on hold - we are still hoping to celebrate the season and our swimmers at a Summer Awards Picnic this summer sometime – informal awards presentation, kickball, hot dogs, ice cream, our Member Meeting, etc, and we will keep everyone posted well in advance.  Our NAAC Board has been communicating and we will have our Annual Member Meeting once we are allowed to gather, and our current Board has agreed to continue serving in the interim.  Until we are allowed to gather as a full team, we have our 2019-20 NAAC Awards page now posted HERE!  We have season highlights, words of thanks and gratitude, Senior words of wisdom, and our Group Awards lists.  The Lead Coaches would also love to say a few words about each of their groups and group awards, and we are planning on doing this at our Summer Awards Picnic (hopefully!).  You must be logged in to your Team Account to view our Awards Page, just FYI.   And a BIG THANKS to ALL for making the 2019-20 season we were able to complete another GREAT SEASON at NAAC!

PRACTICES

No news on official swim practice start dates from USA Swimming, Ohio Swimming, or our State Government or NA Schools – hopefully something soon so that we can all plan accordingly.  We do know that the entire NA Campus will be closed until at least July 1st, as are all K-12 schools in Ohio, so we will for sure not be at the NAHS pool until at least early July.  USA Swimming has posted a facility re-opening document HERE, and that will be a part of what we use to plan heading back to practices at the NAHS pool and anywhere else we might practice, in addition to compliance with any new State, Local and/or Facility best practices.

We have also been in continued contact with area outdoor pools (The Links, Gahanna) and Denison, and are keeping our options open to do our best to get our NAAC Swimmers back in the water ASAP.  Perhaps even some open water practices, as we usually host in the summer…  I know that some are on track for Alum Creek Beach open water swimming on their own soon, which is a great idea, but NAAC is not yet able to conduct any official practices, just as an FYI.  For now, Alum Creek swimming will need to be on your own (and will likely require a wetsuit!).

I have been in touch regularly with USA Swimming, Ohio Swimming and our NAAC Coaches, and I will let the Team know as soon as we have any additional info.  We are doing our best to plan for different scenarios with the info we have available.

AGAIN - until we are back in the water we have posted our NAAC full home-based training HERE!

Our goal is to provide ways for our NAAC Swimmers to be able to get useful, effective dryland in each day (NAAC MT, Quaran-Train, Mobility, Stretching) at their own convenience, and to easily track their work and their main indicators (sleep, nutrition, etc).  We want to reduce complexity & chaos for our Team Families by providing easy to follow checklists with lots of demo videos and keep our NAAC Swimmers on track to generally becoming better ATHLETES until we can get back in the water to specifically becoming better SWIMMERS again soon!

And swimmers – please feel free to have your parent send us a photo of you doing some of our Daily MT or Quaran-Traininng so that we can get it posted on our website!

MEETS

USA Swimming has cancelled all Meet Sanctions through May.  Many larger USA Swimming Meets scheduled for this summer have been cancelled (Futures, Sectionals, USA Summer Jr/Sr) and there are TENTATIVE plans for some type of Regional Meets, with qualifying times, locations and full details TBA in the near future. The latest on higher level meets from the USA Swimming email that went out earlier this week follows:

"Given the varying timelines expected for a return to training, we have made the decision to modify our upcoming events schedule. National events in July and early August, which include USA Swimming Sectionals, Futures and the Speedo Summer Championships, will be canceled in order to refocus our efforts on introducing a new series of summer events better tailored to the current environment.

The introduction of 14 to 16 [separate] regional events in mid to late August would allow for a successful return to pools and training and help kickoff the competition season.

These regionally focused events will limit the need for travel and promote a safer competition environment for our athletes, families and everyone involved. The approval of these event sanctions will be subject to local health guidelines and directives. We look forward to providing further details in the coming weeks."

I have updated our TENTATIVE Summer Meet Schedule which is posted online HERE.  Please note that this Meet Schedule will still likley change quite a bit from what is posted!

------------

Please help your swimmer get started with our NAAC Weekly & Quaran-Train Checklists if they have yet to do so – we can all come out of this time better, stronger athletes, which will allow all of our NAAC Swimmers to become better swimmers that much faster once we are back in the water!!  And if you or your swimmer have any questions please simply reply to Coach John from this email.

And as noted in the previous Team Updates, no group fees were charged to any of our Team Families today, Friday May 1st, 2020.

Thanks - John C & NAAC Coaches

Team Update April 23, 2020

NAAC Families & Swimmers -

Hope you are all still faring as well as possible during these shifting times, and that you and yours are staying healthy, safe and sane.  Thanks to all of our NAAC Families & Swimmers for doing your parts in helping us get through this time, and please know that we are keeping all of our options open to help our swimmers as best we can.

We had planned to celebrate our 2019-20 swim season at Villa Milano last night at our Annual NAAC Awards Banquet and Member Meeting, and just as so many other things have changed, we did not get to do so.  We missed seeing all of you last night!!  Our NAAC Board has been communicating and we will have our Annual Member Meeting once we are allowed to gather, and our current Board has agreed to continue serving in the interim.  We are still hoping to celebrate the season and our swimmers at a Team Awards Picnic this summer sometime – informal awards presentation, kickball, hot dogs, ice cream, our Member Meeting, etc, and we will keep everyone posted well in advance.  We will also be posting a Team Awards page soon, so be on the look out for another Team Update in the near future – and until then, HERE is our 2019-20 NAAC Awards Slideshow put together by Livy Meeting for us this year!

PRACTICES

No news on possible swim practice start dates from USA Swimming, Ohio Swimming, or our State Government or NA Schools – hopefully something soon so that we can all plan accordingly.  With schools in Ohio now closed through the end of the year it is doubtful we will be allowed to practice at NA until at least this summer.  I have been in touch regularly with USA Swimming, Ohio Swimming and our NAAC Coaches, and I will let the Team know as soon as we have any info.  We have also been in contact with NAHS, area outdoor pools and Denison, and are keeping our options open to do our best to get our NAAC Swimmers back in the water ASAP.

Until we are back in the water, though, we have posted a full home-based training page HERE!

Our theme during these uncertain times is again to HAVE COURAGE, and so we have posted Weekly Checklists and 3x per week Quaran-Train dryland checklists per Senior and Age Groups, with video demos on our New Albany Aquatics Club YouTube Channel HERE (just click playlists to see specifics), as well as NAAC MT (Morning Training) & challenge workouts posted on our Instagram @ swimstrongnaacBe the One to Have Courage and get all of your checklists completed each week!

We have a brief intro on the Have Courage, Quaran-Train page, Team Info to follow along with, and checklists to track indicators and to track dryland training.  Simply use the Team Info to help guide you, print out the appropriate Info, Weekly Checklists and Quaran-Train Checklists, hang the lists on your fridge to follow along each day, and review listed exercises on our Instagram or linked YouTube channel as needed.  Weekly Checklist directions are at the bottom of the Quaran-Train webpage.

And swimmers please feel free to have your parent send us a photo of you doing some of our Daily MT or Quaran-Traininng so that we can get it posted on our website!

MEETS

USA Swimming has cancelled all Meet Sanctions through May, and Ohio Swimming has communicated that the March SC JO Meet that was originally postponed has now been cancelled – sorry to all of our swimmers(!) and I have updated our TENTATIVE Summer Meet Schedule which is posted online HERE.

-----------

Please help your swimmer get started with our NAAC Weekly & Quaran-Train Checklists – we can all come out of this time better, stronger athletes, which will allow all of our NAAC Swimmers to become better swimmers that much faster once we are back in the water!!

And as noted in the previous Team Update, no group fees will be charged to any of our Team Families on May 1st.

Thanks - John C & NAAC Coaches

---------------------------------------------

Team Update April 5, 2020

NAAC Families & Swimmers –

Hope you are all faring as well as possible during these shifting times, and that you and yours are staying healthy, safe and sane.  Thanks to all of our NAAC Families for being a part of NAAC, and we are looking forward to getting into the water as soon as we are able!

I had a Zoom Meeting with USA Swimming Program Development and about 20 other Head Coaches of teams +/- our size in our Zone (OSSC, Mason, Marlins, etc from IL, IN, IO,…) and we will be Zoom meeting regularly to stay in some kind of loop.  Many very different team situations depending upon who owns the pool, who owns the team, how they charge team fees, etc – so even though our teams are similar in size, not necessarily a ton of common circumstances.  Good to touch base with USA Swimming leadership and some other USA Swimming Coaches, though, and USA Swimming should have some blanket directions out about meets & practices heading into spring & summer by mid-April.  We have also had a large Zoom NAAC group coaches meeting, constant contact with the NAAC Board, and frequent individual coaching contacts to plan forward s best we can.  All just FYI.

And speaking of meets, we have cancelled our Spring IMX Meet.  With no training behind the meet, and the likelihood of the pool actually being open then pretty low, we will just plan on focusing on the training (the process!) once we are allowed back in the water together.  It is unlikely that we will have any May meets at all, and June meets TBD, so we should all be wrapping our heads around having fun, hard practices once we are back in the water and embracing the process.  Team Meet Calendar is HERE with our 2020 Spring/Summer Tentative Meet Schedule at the top.

So… I wanted to run down where we are, what we are planning for, and what we are considering so that you are all aware as we roll through April with no NAAC programming scheduled.  The Team Calendar is updated, along with New Swimmer Eval info, etc so that all know we have no programming until at least early May.  And again…

Our number one priority right now is to keep NAAC intact by moving forward as prudently as possible.

Where we are

  • We are not in the water until at least the start of May, perhaps even later.
  • We are in contact with NAPLS and our pool rent is on hold for now, forward rent to be decided based upon circumstances.
  • We sent out a dryland progression for all groups (NAAC MT) that runs through today Sunday, April 5th and we will send out a new, simple MT for April soon.
  • We started an Instagram @swimstrongnaac, which I have posted a little to for the team and will post regularly this coming month.  Challenge workout posted yesterday!
  • We want to maintain contact with our Team Families, and equally want to minimize complexity and chaos for all in these stressful, changing times.

What we are planning for (as of today)

  • No April programming, all April practices and dates have been removed from the Team Calendar.
  • Spring IMX Swim Meet @ NAHS scheduled for Sunday May 3rd is cancelled.
  • Our planning for swimmer engagement (through technology, sending workouts, etc) will focus on simplicity, eliminating complexity and chaos as best we can.

If it looks like we will have programming beginning by or around mid-May:

  • We will charge our Top 4 groups their regularly scheduled group monthly fee for May on June 1st, which would then be their last group monthly fee for the year.
  • We will plan for regular May group practices once we re-start, with most meets still TBD.

If it looks like we will not have programming until later May and/or June:

  • We will not charge our Top 4 groups their last scheduled (full) regular monthly fee June 1st.
  • We will pro-rate a 50% monthly payment due June 1st if we are scheduled to have programming in June.
  • We will forego/cancel the last scheduled regular monthly fee entirely if it looks like we will not start programming until July or later.
  • We will adjust our planned practices to fit primarily at the HS, possibly also utilizing the Links Pool this summer if available.
  • If foregoing/cancelling all remaining group fees for the 2019-20 season we will need to adjust summer Coaching and Group schedules to fit our new budget, and we are planning for multiple scenarios.

What we are considering (as of today)

  • All of the above provides a still very fluid context, and we will adjust as best we can with all that we have available to us – as always, Logistics, then Strategy, then TacticsWe are planning for multiple scenarios and will always consider what is best for the Team and the Swimmers first and foremost.

-------------------

For a final thought, our theme for the month, and perhaps on into our return:

COURAGE

Be the One

Courage - for the swimmers to help out at home, to do some training on their own, to come out better on the other side of this.  Be the One – the one who is first to help at home, to do work on their own, to follow along with NAAC MT and future training.

-------------------

We wanted to let you all know that we are planning for NAAC as best we can during these crazy, uncertain times.  If any of you need anything from me please don't hesitate to ask.  We'll keep you all in the loop as best I can as far as what's planned for when, why and how with NAAC, Ohio Swimming and USA Swimming.  Team Updates are now again posted on our website as the first sub-tab under Team Info in case anyone gets emails lost in the shuffle, and I linked on our Command Buttons next to our photo scroll.

Thanks - John C & NAAC Coaches

Team Update March 20, 2020

NAAC Families & Swimmers –

We’ve only been out of the water for a short while, and it already feels like so, so long!  Crazy times for sure, and hope all of you and yours are staying healthy, safe and sane.  Many things in our lives are changing quickly, and I wanted to give you all a quick rundown of all things NAAC.  I will explain a bit below, bullet point some items, and then wrap up.

We all feel terrible for our NAAC swimmers who were heading into their Critical, Championship Meets, both JO swimmers and NCSA Jr. National swimmers.  We especially feel for the top-of-Age Group swimmers and HS Seniors that did not get their last earned opportunity to compete this winter. This was certainly not the way they envisioned their seasons ending, and we wish we could’ve helped make that different.  We are grateful, however, for the end of season meets that we were able to get in with Barbara Kay, Regionals, the entire HS Tournament & Sr Circuit.

We all find ourselves in uncharted territory here, and I will make my thoughts below as concise as possible.  Hopefully we can resume practices at some point this spring/summer, but we do not know that now.  The thoughts below are based on some pretty big assumptions, but I think the best any of us can do is plot our course from where we stand, and if we get blown off course by another storm we’ll re-group, plan, and plot another course.  I have been working closely with the NAAC Board in navigating the situation (and thanks to them for their time & efforts!), and we will continue to assess and adjust plans as best we can for all of NAAC – Swimmers, Team Families, Coaches, Officials & Support Staff.

Our destination at this point is keeping NAAC intact by moving forward as prudently as possible.

Where does NAAC stand right now?

  • We have no currently scheduled pool time, March 12-April 5 at the least.
  • We have a very tentative April 6 spring start date.
  • We have provided some basic dryland (NAAC MT) through April 5 for all groups to keep our swimmers active (training and exercise demos on Instagram @ swimstrongnaac)
  • We are planning for many different scenarios based on changing circumstances, and will plan on getting back in the water as soon as we are able.
  • We are currently financially sound – this will not break us this spring or summer.

How does NAAC plan to prudently move forward?

  • We will not charge any regularly scheduled group fees in April, and we will assess all remaining group fees as we move forward in negotiations with the school.
  • We will only charge remaining meet fees (for meets that we actually participated in) and for the Fire-Up Dinner, and these will be the only fees charged on April 1st.
  • We will continue to send Team Updates each week and/or when any new information comes our way.
  • We have postponed our April awards banquet and hope to host an awards picnic later this spring or summer, with kickball, hot dogs, ice cream, and a relaxing, fun time; date TBD.
  • We will continue to re-group and plan accordingly as circumstances change.

Much the same as in our last regular Team Updates, I want to remind you all that you most often get what you focus on.  So in these crazy, unprecedented times please try to focus on your and your family's health, both physical and mental.  Get plenty of sleep, eat as best/healthy as you can, get some exercise, and stay on some kind of general schedule to help alleviate the varied stresses all around us right now.  Focus on what you can control and find peace in those simple tasks.

Similarly, we implore our swimmers to Learn, Have Fun and Compete, and it would be prudent for all of us to find a way to do these things at home right now.  Learn about "xyz", have fun not only on your own but with your families (game night, movie night, talk often, etc), and compete in some way - dryland, board games, card games, organizing rooms - something.  Activity, particularly directed activity, can help relieve stress.

And lastly, I would encourage you all to be as proactive as you can right now.  You can let things happen to you, or you can choose to make things happen.  We're all in this odd situation together - how can you bend the circumstances to work for you rather than work on you/against you?

Beyond the Mountains are more Mountains – Keep Climbing.

Just wanted to let you know that we are planning for NAAC as best we can, and possibly provide some words of encouragement during this crazy time.

If you need anything from me please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks – John C & the NAAC Coaches
