Officials Training

Officials Training Schedule

There are two types of training scheduled throughout the year.

Level I certification is the "basic training" of officiating. The class is 3-4 hours in length and costs $20, which includes a copy of the USA Swimming Rule Book. It covers the basics of the rules of swimming and introduces almost all of the concepts you will need to know about each stroke, proper turns and how to work as an official at a swim meet. It also covers the basics of swimming such as pool dimensions, depth and the layout of a swimming pool for proper competition. Once you take this course and pass the test, you are a Level I official. In addition to the course and test, the St. Louis District requires that you work with a Level II official at 4 swim meets before you become qualified to work at any Championship (District or Area) Meets. Level II certification must be renewed every three years.

The second type of training scheduled during the year is the Yearly Review. This review course is required of all officials each year in order to officate at meets during that year. This course lasts 1-2 hours and costs $10 which includes a copy of the latest USA Swimming Rule Book.

Note: Due to the change to the use of USA Technical Rules for YMCA swimming this year, all officials are required to take a full 4-hour recertification class during the 2007-2008 season.
