Types of Swim Meets

BREAKERS Meets are meets put on by BWST for the Breaker and Surfer squads only.  These are "unofficial" and important to give kids experience in competing.  They are usually either at the Pavilion or the Madeira school.

OPEN Meets are for all swimmers and all members are encouraged to participate.

MINI Meets are for swimmers that are 8 & under (some allow 9 year olds).  Must be legal in at least 3 competitive strokes to compete.

PVS Championship Meets* (14 & Under & Senior Championships) are open to qualifiers who achieved the qualifying times or faster. Team scores are kept and team awards are given. All PVS Qualifying standards can be found on the PVS Swimming website. Click here for more information.

Zone Meets* are bi-annual regional championship meets held each March/April and August by USA Swimming. USA Swimming divids the country into four zones and each zone has its own meet and names a zone champion.
  • March/April SC Zones team: only the top three 14 & under swimmers and top two 15 & over swimmers in each event are selected go go from each LSC.
  • August LC Zones: swimmers who meet the qualifying standards are eligible to participate.
Speedo Sectional Meets* provide the next level of competition for qualifying swimmers. The Speedo Sectional Meets have no age groups and all event seeding is based only on qualifying times. The Speedo Sectional Meet is usually held at a premier location.

NSCA Junior Nationals* are held each March for qualifying swimmers age 18 and under. This meet is hosted by the National Swim Coaches of America (NSCA).  In past years, this meet has been held in Orlando.

USA Swimming Junior National Championships*
USA Junior Nationals are exclusively for swimmers age 18 and under and the meet is held each December (short course) and August (long course). This meet serves as a stepping stone to the top national and international level meets for 18 and under athletes. Qualifying times for this meet are faster than the NSCA JR National Meet in March.

USASwimming National Championships/US Open*
These top national level competitions are held at different times throughout the year and serve as qualifying meets for international level competitions.  There is no age limitation on these meets.

US Nationals* are held twice a year and is the top annual championship meet in America.  Qualification times for this elite senior meet are faster than for the US Open.  America’s fastest swimmers compete.

Olympic Trials* are held every four years to select swimmers for the Olympic Games. This elite senior selection meet has qualification times faster than US Nationals. The top two swimmers in each individual event, plus a few additional freestylers, are selected for the US Olympic Team.

*These meets are TEAM championship meets and are the meets we strive to qualify for.  If you qualify for these meets it is expected that you will attend to represent BLUE WAVE.
