May 2020 Officials Training Update

Hello to my York Family,

Although I may not know you personally, I consider you family because you are a part of York. York has been hard at work engaging our swimmers through online dryland, games, and social chats. Last night I joined a parents happy hour hosted by York coaches and it was wonderful to see everyone. I felt a resurgence of hope and energy while engaging with my York family. Now I now exactly how my daughter Lindsey (17) feels every day after dryland.

I am reaching out to you today to ask for your help. York Swim Club does not have enough officials to meet the Potomac Valley Swimming (PVS) requirement for our club. To make matters worse, most of our current officials have swimmers who will graduate this year or in 2021.  Although meets are on hold, you can still attend online clinics. Please consider attending an online clinic. York needs your help! There is an online Stroke and Turn (ST) clinic on TUESDAY, JUNE 9, 7 PM. It is very informative. I took one last week so that I can be recertified at ST. You must preregister by clicking HERE. In addition to the ST clinic, you can also take online clinics for Electronic Timing System Operator (ETS) and Computer Operator (CO). The links to register can be found here:

ETS: https://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/fqe16wgcPdbdr075Qv6EC6

CO: https://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/jxE1M83fYALJg0z8e

Below are some “FAST FACTS” about being an official:

  1. It costs money. TRUE but York Swim Club will pay for your first year’s registration fee and will reimburse you for the cost of your background check. Once you are certified, PVS will pay for your registration if you work 10 session (not meets) during the calendar year. PVS will also reimburse you for your background check.
  2. I have to work every meet. FALSE. You need to work 4 sessions (not meets) per year to maintain your certification.
  3. I will not get any breaks while on deck. FALSE. Officials tend to get more breaks than timers. Timers usually cannot leave until the session is over.

I know many of you have listened to my pleas at the York Parent’s night meetings. We really your help. Being on deck as an official is a great experience. I have met many good friends, given back to my community, and have set a great example for my daughter Lindsey. Lindsey is a regular volunteer at all of the York Mini Meets. As her graduation approaches next year, I am so grateful to have been a part of her swimming world as an official. I have been able to see her personal and physical growth in and out of the water. I have been able to have a front row seat to the York comradery- evident between swimmers and with their coaches.  I would not trade my experiences as an official for anything.

Please consider exploring the world as a PVS Official. You will not regret it. I am available to chat via email, phone, etc., if you have any questions.

Thanks for reading this email to the end!

2019 Welcome Letter

Hello York Parents!

Welcome to the 2019-2020 swim season. The meet schedule for the season has been set and preparations have begun. It takes many volunteers to run these meets, including marshals, timers, and most importantly OFFICIALS. Did you know that there is a minimum number of officials required to run a swim meet? Did you also know that each club is required to have a certain number of officials based on the total number of registered swimmers? Now is the time to volunteer!

We really need your help on deck. This is most evident at the age group and mini meets. Most of the officials currently registered with YORK have swimmers who are over the age of 12.  Please contact me for details. I would be happy to share my experiences as an official.

Regards,

Carolyn Kotarski
