Carefree Crocodiles Swim Team – FAQ
Q: When does the season start?
A: Traditionally the season begins the first week of June.
Q: When does the season end?
A: Usually the 3rd or 4th weekend of July.
Q: What are the days and times of practices?
A: Practice days are M, T, TR, and F. Practice times are 7:30 – 8:25 a.m. and 8:30 – 9:25 a.m.
Q: Does my swimmer have to attend a certain practice?
A: No, swimmers can come to either practice and can switch at anytime.
Q: Are all practices mandatory?
A: No, we know summer is a time for vacation and other activities. However in the interest of improvement and swim experience, it’s best to attend as many practices as possible.
Q: Are there specific age groups on the team?
A: Yes, the age groups are: 6 & under, 8 & under, 9 – 10, 11 – 12, 13 – 14, 15 – 17
Q:How old does my child need to be to be on the team?
A: 4 – 5 is generally the earliest we would recommend joining the team. Your swimmer would need to be confident enough to swim the width of the diving well, approx. 15 yards.
Q: What is the minimum distance my swimmer is required to swim?
A: 6 & under swim the length of the diving well (approx. 15 yds.) with lifeguard assistance. All other age groups swim a minimum distance of 25 yards.
Q: Does my swimmer need to be proficient in all strokes to be on the team?
A: No, our team is a development program with coaches always working to improve confidence and stroke proficiency. However, swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards if 8 yrs or older
Q: What equipment is required?
A: No equipment is required, however we highly recommend having a competitive team swim suit, goggles, and swim cap (usually worn by swimmers with longer hair). Carefree will supply kick boards
Q: Where do we purchase team equipment?
A: We recommend purchasing a team suit and swim cap from us. The team suit can be purchased from the home page of our website by selecting the “Crocodiles Team Suits” button. Swim caps will be sold during the first week of practice. Goggles can be purchased at your local sporting goods store.
Q: How many swim meets are there?
A: We usually schedule 6 or 7 dual meets with 5 other teams in our conference. We also have a final conference meet that includes all 6 teams.
Q: What teams do you swim against?
A: Carefree Crocodiles is a member of the Community Swim Conference, swimming against 5 other teams from the surrounding Indianapolis area. You can find the teams and get directions to each of the pools by selecting the “Pool Locations” link on our website.
Q: How do we sign up for meets?
A: Swim meet sign-up is done through the “Events” section on our website. You can sign up for any meets at any time once your team registration fee has been received and approved.
Q: How do we find out if practices or meets have been postponed or cancelled due to weather?
A: For updates concerning cancellation of practice due to inclement weather, call the Carefree hotline (883-7101) to get the latest announcements. The number is also posted on the front page of our website. Note: The Hotline is for announcements only, please do not leave messages. For meets, always show up at the pool as the weather can change very quickly. All lifeguards and coaches are very experienced in understanding adverse weather conditions and will cancel the meet if necessary.
Q: Are we required to attend all meets?
A: No, however in order to swim in the final conference meet, swimmers must compete in at least 2 regular season meets. Also, in the interest of improvement and swimmer experience, its best to attend as many meets as possible.
Q: Are there extra fees for meets?
A: No, all meets are included in the registration fee.
Q: What are the days and times of the meets?
A: Meets will be held on Tue. and Thur. with a usual start time of 6:00 p.m. Swimmers will need to arrive about 45 minutes before meet start time.
Q: How long do the meets last?
A: Meets usually last about 3hrs.
Q: Do we have to stay for the entire meet?
A: No, but usually you will because your swimmer will frequently swim the final freestyle relay of their age group.
Q. Do the swimmers get ribbons at the meets?
A: Yes. At the dual meets, typically 1st through 6th place get ribbons for swimmers ages 8-17. Some teams may award additional places. The ribbons will be placed in the swim box during the meet, and the coaches will bring out the box after the next practice so the swimmers can collect their ribbons. Swimmers ages 6 and younger get exhibition ribbons. At the conference meet, medals are provided for 1st through 3rd place, and nice ribbons for 4th through 12th place.
Q: Do we get to choose what events our kids swim?
A: No, however our coaches make sure that all swimmers have a chance to swim all strokes during the course of the season. Normally each swimmer gets to participate in 2-3 events and at least one relay during each meet.
Q. How do I know what events my child will swim?
A: The coaches post sheets at our swimmer’s camp (usually on the fence) and they are arranged by age group. Please refer to these sheets instead of asking the coaches since they will be involved with warm-ups and getting the swimmers ready for the meet.
Q: Is there a mandatory volunteer commitment?
A: Yes, each family is required to work at least 3 meets during the season. This means you could work three separate meets or have 3 family members work a single meet. We appreciate if you volunteer more but the requirement is 3 meets. We also ask that each family have someone participate in or volunteer at our Fun Run (please see below for more information).
Q: How do we sign up to volunteer?
A: Volunteer sign-up is done through the “Events” section on our website. You can volunteer for any meet at any time once your team registration fee has been received and approved. There are a variety of easy jobs to choose from. Definitions for these positions can also be found through the “Events” section on our website. Volunteers should check in with the volunteer coordinator upon arriving at the meet. You should arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the start of the meet. Most teams provide beverages to the volunteers.
Q: Is there a fund raiser for the team?
A: Yes, we have an annual 5k Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run. We ask that you either participate or volunteer for the event. It’s always been a fun event for our families with awards, refreshments, raffle prizes, music, and swimming. You can find out more about this event by selecting the “Fun Run” link on our website.
