2018 LMYA Gutter Guppy Program
June 11 - July 26, 2018
Practices on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays only
(NO Friday practices)
The Gutter Guppy program will expose young children to the fun and team work involved with being on the LMYA Swim Team. The program is open to any child between the ages of 3 and 6 (and out of swim diapers). It is a pre-team program for children who may not be ready for the demands of swim team and for those who cannot swim the length of the pool (25 yards) without stopping or taking a break to hold on to the lanes ropes. The goal is for the guppies to learn basic stroke techniques and build confidence to swim the length of the 25 yard pool.
During this program, your swimmers will learn the basics of the competitive strokes including freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke. Some may progress to butterfly as they are ready. Our coaches start from the very basic components of each stroke and progress from there to help swimmers learn the technique of each stroke. They will also introduce diving.
This program is NOT for children who have not been exposed to the water. The child must be safe in the water and exhibit some comfort and ease with getting in the pool. The program is not a 1 on 1 swim lesson.
Instructional focus is given on stroke and kicking technique to eventually prepare them for the competitive swim team. The average coach to swimmer ratio is 1:3.
Gutter Guppy Format
The Gutter Guppy program will run concurrent with swim team practice (in the shallow lanes). The schedule is to accommodate families with older siblings on swim team. Also, the guppies will experience and be included in all the fun on-deck activities that happen throughout the summer swim season.
The sessions will be 20 minutes with staggered starts at 9:50am, 10:10am, 10:30am, 10:50am and 11:10am (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). There will be no practice on Fridays. Select your start time at registration, subject to availability, as group sizes will be limited to optimize the overall experience for each guppy.
Registration fee: $250/swimmer
Location: Acalanes High School Pool, home of the annual Contra Costa County Swim Meet, 1200 Pleasant Hill Road, Lafayette CA
Each participant should wear a snug-fitting suit, goggles and sunscreen. Caps are optional, but help to keep hair out of the way. Loose fitting board shorts and swim shirts are not recommended as they can weigh down and put additional drag on swimmers as they try to learn.

Gutter Guppy evaluations are held in advance of the regular summer season. The purpose of these very low-key evaluations is simply to ensure that each participant is comfortable with the water. For safety reasons, each potential guppy should be able to swim 10-15 feet and take a breath unassisted. On the www.lmyaswim.com website, there will be an “Event” for you to select which evaluation day you plan to attend evaluations so we know when to expect your swimmer. Your child only needs to attend one session. Evaluation dates are TBD.
No practice will be held July 2 - 4, 2018 in observance of the holiday.
Guppy Exhibition Swim Meet
July 21st at 9:00am at Acalanes High School. The guppies will swim the first event of our final home swim meet of the season with the Aquaknights swim team.
