Swim Class Description

Swim Class Descriptions

We offer Preschool and Youth classes.  Preschool classes are designed for children that are 3 to 5 years old.  All preschool classes have 1 to 2 swim aides.  Youth classes are designed for children that are 6 years or older.  All Youth 1, 2, and 3 classes will have 1 or 2 swim aides and the instructor will be in the water with the students.

 

 

Preschool Classes

Preschool 1 Skill Set

The students will demonstrate:

  • Comfort while away from a wall or the steps

  • Blowing bubbles

  • Putting entire face underwater for 3 seconds or longer

  • Standing at chest depth water for 5 seconds or longer

  • Proper flutter kicking while holding a wall for 10 seconds or longer

  • Front floating with aid for 3 seconds or longer

  • Back floating with aide for 3 seconds or longer

  • Jumping into the pool from the side to an instructor

  • Picking up a toy from the third step.

  • Pushing off the bottom of the pool once with their feet

  • Lifting self from the pool without using the steps

  • Walking the wall with hand and feet - 10 feet or more

  • Introduce crawl stroke with instructor aid

  • Safety Rule: "I will not go swimming by myself"

Preschool 2 Skill Set

The students will demonstrate:

  • All skills from Preschool 1

  • 5 totally submerged bobs while holding on to the wall

  • Retrieving a toy from a depth of at least 3 feet

  • Pushing from bottom 10 feet to a wall

  • Totally submerging and hold breath for 5 seconds or longer

  • Front floating without aid for 5 seconds or longer

  • Back floating by themselves for 5 seconds or longer

  • Turning from front float to back float without aid

  • Turning from back float to front float without aid

  • Proper flutter kicking with a kickboard while the instructor holds the board

  • Pushing from the bottom 3 separate times and getting a breath after each push

  • Pushing from wall and move forward by self without aid for at least 5 yards on stomach, any technique with 2 forward breaths

  • Lifting self from the pool without using the steps

  • Walking the wall with hand and feet - 10 feet or more

  • Introduce crawl stroke with instructor aid

  • Safety Rule: "I will not go swimming by myself"

 

Preschool 3 Skill Set

The students will demonstrate:

  • All skills from Preschool 1 and 2

  • 10 totally submerged bobs while holding on to the wall

  • Pushing from bottom 5 yards to a wall at a depth of 3 feet or deeper

  • Totally submerging and hold breath for 10 seconds or longer

  • Proper flutter kicking with a kickboard without an aid, with head under water for 3 breaths

  • Pushing from the bottom 6 separate times and getting a breath after each push

  • Pushing from wall and move forward by self without aid for 10 yards on stomach, any technique

  • Pushing from wall and move forward by self without aid for 10 yards on back, any technique

  • Swimming crawl stroke at least 5 yards with forward breathing

  • Retrieving a toy at the bottom of pool at a depth of at least 4 feet

  • Jumping into the water, to an instructor, at a depth of at least 8 feet

  • Pulling self from pool in water of a depth of 8 feet or deeper

  • Safety Rule: "I stay away from the water if I am by myself"

Youth Classes

Youth 1 Skill Set

The students will demonstrate:

  • Comfort while away from a wall or the steps

  • Blowing bubbles

  • Putting entire face underwater for 5 seconds or longer

  • Standing in chest depth water for 5 seconds or longer, without holding a wall

  • Proper flutter kicking while holding a wall for 10 seconds or longer

  • Front floating with aid for 5 seconds or longer

  • Back floating with aid for 5 seconds or longer

  • Jumping into the pool from the side to an instructor

  • Picking up a toy from the bottom of the pool at 3 foot depth

  • Pushing off the bottom, or walking 10 feet on the bottom of the pool

  • Lifting self from the pool without using the steps

  • Walking the wall with hand and feet 20 feet or more

  • Can swim crawl stroke 10 yards, with breath or not

  • Safety Rule: "I will not go swimming by myself"

Youth 2 Skill Set

The students will demonstrate:

  • All skills from Youth 1

  • 10 totally submerged bobs while holding on to the wall

  • Retrieving a toy from a depth of at least 6 feet

  • Pushing from bottom, or walking 10 feet to a wall

  • Totally submerging and holding breath for 10 seconds or longer

  • Turning from front float to back float without aid

  • Turning from back float to front float without aid

  • Jumping from a diving board into the pool and swimming to the side without aid

  • Proper flutter kicking with a kickboard without aid - 10 yards

  • Swimming backstroke for 10 yards

  • Swimming crawl stroke 25 yards with front or side breathing

  • Proper elementary backstroke kick - 15 yards

  • Safety Rule: "Swimming with other is more fun and safer"

 

Youth 3 Skill Set

The students will demonstrate:

  • All skills from Youth 1 and 2

  • Retrieving a toy from a depth of at least 8 feet

  • Backstroke for 15 yards without aid

  • Proper flutter kicking with a kickboard with no aid - 25 yards

  • Sculling for 2 continuous minutes, with head above water

  • Survival floating for 2 continuous minutes

  • Proper elementary backstroke - 25 yards

  • Legal breast stroke kick with a kick board - 15 yards

  • Proper dolphin kicking - 10 yards with kickboard without aid

  • Swimming crawl stroke 25 yards with side breathing only

  • Kneeling dive from the side of the pool

  • Safety Rule: "I will always wear a life jacket when on a boat, jet bike, or around deep water"

 

Youth 4 Skill Set

The students will demonstrate:

  • All skills from Youth 1, 2, and 3

  • Retrieving a toy from a depth of at least 8 feet

  • Pushing from bottom, or walking 10 yards to a wall

  • Totally submerging and hold breath for 15 seconds or longer

  • Backstroke for 25 yards

  • Sculling for 6 continuous minutes, with head above water

  • Survival floating for 6 continuous minutes

  • Legal breast stroke - 25 yards

  • Swimming crawl stroke 50 yards with side breathing only

  • Proper shallow standing dive from the side of the pool

  • 5 minute continuous swimming any technique or stroke - must always be moving forward, must push from wall immediately

  • Proper streamlining from wall, with at least 4 dolphin kicks

  • Safety Rule: "I will never yell to a lifeguard for help unless there is actual trouble"

 

Youth 5 Skill Set

The students will demonstrate:

  • All skills from Youth 1, 2, 3, and 4

  • Backstroke for 50 yards

  • Sculling for 10 continuous minutes, with head above water

  • Survival floating for 10 continuous minutes

  • Legal breast stroke - 50 yards

  • Swimming crawl stroke 100 yards with side breathing only

  • 10 minute continuous swimming any technique or stroke - must always be moving forward, must push from wall immediately

  • Proper streamlining form wall, with at least 6 dolphin kicks

  • Legal butterfly stroke for 25 yards

  • Proper shallow dive from the blocks

  • Safety Rule: "I will always look before I dive into water.  If I can't see the bottom, I will test the depth first, before I dive"
