Level Descriptions

Briarwood Swim Club offers swimming lessons for ALL ages and abilities.  We offer both group and private lessons.  A schedule of our group lessons are listed below.  To schedule a private lesson please contact Brooke Pike.

GROUP LESSONS:

Group lessons run Monday-Thursday for 2 week sessions.  Times are offered as posted below.

Monday-Thursday                    Lvls 1-3 10:00-10:30 / 10:40-11:10 AM

                                               Lvl 4 11:15-11:45

Session Dates: 

June 6-16                                          July 11-21

June 20-30                                        July 25- Aug 4

 

*Fridays will be used as make up days (weather permitting)

LEVELS:

Level Descriptions:

 

LEVEL 1 
Swimmers will learn to:

  • Discuss basic pool safety
  • Achieve comfort in the water while being held/supported by teacher
  • Submerge face in the water while blowing bubbles (learning to exhale)
  • 5 bobs on wall, exhaling under water or in baby pool
  • Practice blowing bubbles and turning head to side, keeping ear in the water
  • Flutter kick on front w/support
  • Flutter kick on back w/support
  • Float on front w/support (streamline, arms up, hands together)
  • Float on back w/support (streamline, arms up, hands together)
  • Push off wall, kick on front with face submerged to teacher (assisted)
  • Push off wall, kick on back w/support to teacher (assisted)
  • Jump into the pool to teacher (big pool)
  • Introduce freestyle “reaching” arms on front and back out of the water
  • Practice freestyle and backstroke arms in the water w/support

 

LEVEL 2

Swimmers will learn to:

  • Discuss pool safety
  • Practice freestyle arms in the water with support
  • Practice backstroke arms in the water with support
  • Bob supported (wall or teacher)
  • Practice retrieving objects from under water
  • Practice breath to side on wall
  • Float on front without support for 10 seconds
  • Float on back without support for 10 seconds
  • Push off wall and glide to teacher while exhaling
  • Push off wall and glide to teacher on back
  • Push off wall, streamline position, with kick on front to flags
  • Push off wall, streamline position, with kick on back to flags
  • Flutter kick with a kickboard ½ pool length
  • SL kick on back ½  pool length
  • Practice freestyle arms (high, out of water)
  • Practice backstroke arms (thumb to pinky)
  • Introduce rhythmic breathing at wall
  • Sitting dives

 

LEVEL 3

Swimmers will learn to:

  • 10 bobs independently while exhaling under water
  • kick on front and back pool length
  • Practice freestyle arms (long strokes, high elbow and recovery)
  • Practice backstroke arms (thumb up, pinky switch)
  • Practice float on front and flip to back
  • Practice body roll on front and back
  • Continue to perfect breakout on front and back
  • Introduce breaststroke kick with support
  • Learn stroke count into the wall on backstroke
  • Swim 25 yards freestyle, independently (x2)
  • Swim 25 yards backstroke, independently (x2)
  • Kneeling dives
  • Introduce basic lane swimming etiquette
  • Tread water for (time?)

 

LEVEL 4
Swimmers will

  • Continue to work on proper streamline, breakout and arms for freestyle
  • Continue to work on proper streamline, breakout and arms for backstroke
  • Continue to focus on freestyle arm strokes (slice water, high elbow, etc) by learning and practicing drills
  • Continue to focus on backstroke arms (thumb to pinky switch, long arms, etc) by learning and practicing backstroke drills
  • Practice rhythmic breathing
  • Practice body roll
  • Learn circle swimming
  • Dive from standing position
  • Dive in and practice full and proper 25 yard freestyle
  • Learn breaststroke kick
  • Practice swimming freestyle and backstroke 25 yards at a time
